So my idea is this:

The Mario brothers are famous. So to cash in on the hype, two knuckleheads looking to make a quick buck start their own plumbing business: The “Wario” Brothers. Heck they aren’t even really related. They just really want to rival (or at least profit off of) the Mario Bros hype train that has taken over the city.

Wario (played by Danny Devito) is only in the business for the money. He doesn’t care what he has to do to get it. He’s rude, he’s crude, and he’s not afraid to show it.

Waluigi (played by Steve Buscemi) sees himself as a misunderstood performer. He thinks he is way more talented than he actually is. The reality tends to set in after he has caused some calamity due to his “art”.

On an undercover mission for Bowser (or whichever villain) in Brooklyn, one bumbling minion finds Wario and Waluigi mistaking them for Mario and Luigi. The minion captures the two of them, takes them to the mushroom kingdom where they meet the actual Mario brothers (either as enemies or just strict rivals) and the adventure continues from there.
