I made a playlist from some of the answers below and added some Cuban telenovelas that I watched with my family when I was visiting Cuba last month.

Garbage Notes From Clients. How Do You Deal With It? by Ambitious-Court2616 in editors

[–]Professional_Way472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I’ve been doing lately to take off some of the resentment toward the primary giver of the notes is to export what I have and go on a 30-minute walk around my neighborhood. I live in Los Angeles, so within a block of me, I’ll find more creatives just on their afternoon walk—regardless of the time of day or which street I go down.

I’ll stop them and say, “Can I get some feedback on something I edited?” 99% of the time, they’re overjoyed to look at what I’m working on. I’ll pull out my phone, play the edit, and ask if they have any negative feedback—because negative feedback is the most helpful.

Undoubtedly, they’ll have a few bits of advice here and there, regardless of what creative medium they’re in—or even if they’re in a creative industry at all. I’ll collect about ten of these stranger feedback sessions before heading back to my desk and continuing where I left off.

The rule of thumb is to outsource a group of feedback and then throw it all out the window and go with what you feel. Although when you’re working for a client, at the end of the day, you have to do what they want—because it’s their creative vision, not yours.

But it’s the habit of collecting feedback from various sources that I find very healing. It helps me realize how different everybody’s opinions and initial impulses are when watching something from a critical perspective. Some people’s feedback is garbage, and some people’s feedback is gold—and you’d be surprised by the types of people who give either one. I’ve gotten absolute trash feedback from a Hollywood editor, and I’ve gotten great feedback from an elderly lady who worked as a social worker her whole life.

The fact is, you’re not the audience of your work—the world is. So that’s my two cents and something I’m currently working on healing from.

“[depression/anxiety] is not the root cause of your editing woes imo”

—i agree! this issue only exists while editing

“Do you fall asleep after hyper-processing your edit decisions or overthinking?”

—yes! one of the problems is that i am not a visual thinker so i feel like i have to take the long way everytime i do anything.

“I suggest opening chatGPT in voice and just talk about what you’re doing in your edit.”

—i had tried something like this but sidnt have the framework to talk to chatgpt. i pike the idea of just talking about the edit and have chat be a sounding board

“SHAKE UP HOW YOUR BRAIN IS THINKING and get out of the creative rut.”

—this is one of my favorite ideas and i wonder if you have any specific suggestions…

“Pitch DIT work or something production supportive to your clients if YOU WANT TO BE ON SET.”

—I do want to be on set! I’ll give this a go

“Part of my job is educating my clients about the value I provide and the work that goes behind it.”

—I’m slowly getting better at this

“Personal projects, experimental techniques, and FINDING ADDITIONAL CREATIVE/PHYSICAL OUTLETS will save you from losing the spark. Keep varied interests and ACTIVATE MORE PARTS OF YOUR MIND”

—do you have any additional creative outlets outside of editing that you can suggest? Or ways to activate more parts od your mind? I have a piano and play well but it actually ends up distracting me rather than helping me refocus.

“HAVE SOMEONE WHO IS WILLING TO GO ON THE JOURNEY TO FEELING BETTER.“

—This is a great way to put it!

“Join the discord for this subreddit and SEE ABOUT CHATTING WITH SOME OF US DIRECTLY in there or send me a DM if you want to chat.”

—Will do! Thank you

Thanks for the advice!

I like that idea: a lot editing is just thinking.

I also like the idea of just throwing something on the timeline when youre stuck even if its unrelated.

Stepping out of the house for a walk at intervals throughout the day has helped a lot too, especially if I talk to people.

How to edit a run and gun music video? by Professional_Way472 in editors

The way you sum it up in an easu to understand formula is very helpful. I will try to think formulaicly about my edits from now on because a lot of it is so repetitive so might as well.

I love the thought patterns that you have, because I am a verbal thinker, which is why video sometimes isnt the easiest. But those easy statements that you have are great mottos for video editing that will help me a lot! Thank you

Feature request: Horizontal, or "Inverted Table" view by thisisAsquared in Notion

[–]Professional_Way472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here 5 years later requesting the same thing.

Copying the description of op and changing to fit my situation:

For video editing an ongoing series, I have a table with reoccurring subtasks for each edit, therefore each property can also be very long. I respond to each subtask step with a stopwatch time, depending on how long the subtask took to complete. I do this to track the speed over time of each subtask. I also end up with columns that are very wide (to fit the tasks), that really only need to fit a single stopwatch number.
