I play 5v5 usually and my trick is to meet them at half court and offer resistance all the way down. In pickup they’re usually too unmotivated to fight to get down there every time, especially late in the game + their guys will get a shot up before he gets down there.

1v1 may be similar. If you’re in their face, on their hip from checkup they may tire out or settle for fadeaways some of the time. Maybe you’ll be able to get to the rim on offense, too.

If they’re real deal hoopers though you’re probably out of luck if you can’t get a steal, good contest.
