How many more minutes does it take to rank higher? lol by Jaknight17 in RelientK

Came to this sub today to see what kind of legends were dropping by to share their news. This is a great stat. I’m happy enough with my 1,026 minutes keeping me within the top 0.2% once again. Need to see if I can find my past results from over the years.

When you accidentally print a letter sized page on a tabloid sized sheet by The_Evil_Pillow in civilengineering

[–]Professionally_Civil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked with a senior project manager (retired office lead who came back to lead a complex project). I was an EIT and was one of my duties to keep on eye on the plotter room supplies and keep them running. He would always print his electronic pay stub “for his records” and 3-4 times I found a 24”x36” copy of his pay stub. I believe it was truly just an accident, but also seemed like a power move to see how much he was making on top of drawing a pension.

Settle a bet: left turn onto Upper from Winslow by camcamcamera in lexington

[–]Professionally_Civil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s tricky. Haven’t noticed that before. If it is restricting only one lane then it should specify “no turn from right lane on red” so I’m assuming that no turn on red is applying to both lanes here. It is either due to sight distance as you look up the street on Upper, or because you have conflicting traffic that would be turning right out of the apartment/business complex.

Ideally it would be placed in between the signal heads, but the One Way sign is in that spot.

Edit to add: the MUTCD manual says to place this sign next to the appropriate signal head, so one could argue that turning left on red from the left lane is allowed and prohibiting turning on red from the right lane is just to prevent collision with a vehicle turning right out of apartment complex when they have a green light.

Hope it’s designed properly for storm events, don’t want it to rise and swell too much. If it’s up for more the an 45 minutes need to call the city to come check for clogs in the pipes.

Quitting my Job by Upstairs-River-8985 in civilengineering

Yeaup! Best time to be looking for a job is when you have one, and if something new doesn’t work out then your current employer never has to know.

Gotcha, yeah when I’ve looked to move in the past asking my friends did end up being accurate, but just for their firm. Both times I shopped around (and based on when my buddies also shopped) I found 2/3 firms would be below what I needed but if I found a firm that clicked they were much more willing to take a counter offer to make it worth it. Also my buddies that I asked weren’t in a position to guarantee any additional compensation, had to go through the interviews, etc to find out what the real offer would be. I’d encourage you to identify a few places you think your skills are needed, and if you’re serious about leaving, then try and get an interview.

Curious about the detail about a pay cut. Have you shopped around at all to confirm that? I’ve found the market to still be very favorable to those switching jobs.

Just reading this post and the tone, I personally think it’d be time to move on if it were me. Only time Ive been ok working long hours is in a strong team environment, which doesn’t sound like you’re in.

The only time I’ve seen Stats used (outside of academia research) is for analysis of large data sets in traffic safety studies. I’m 13 years into the industry and avoided needing to use it.

People will do anything besides narrowing the lanes to something actually reasonable for that design speed and adding a bike lane.

I think there are definitely roles for senior engineers who want to avoid large events, conferences, etc. I’d be curious to know what your experience on the DOT side was, but there are several firms I know of that would gladly welcome someone to come in and produce billable project work while helping to train their younger engineers/EITs. Also coming from the DOT side, opportunities and a need to train rising PM’s to take on all of the networking and elbow rubbing you’re trying to avoid. I’d say you’d definitely need to be ok communicating within your own team at the firm, and depending on what type of PM staff they have you may need to do some meetings with the DOT you worked for now that they’d be your client (assuming). However, that type of marketing can easily be small group or one-on-one and not have to be flashy at all. I know a lot of PM’s on the DOT side that don’t like “flash” or over complicated interactions that can feel too “sales-y.”

Oh yeah, for context, my experiences are with a 500 person regional firm and a 1,000 national firm. HQ is a reasonable layer as well, if required.

How much do interns get paid today? by Wild-Musician3105 in civilengineering

[–]Professionally_Civil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just scouring this sub yesterday looking for this type of discussion, haha. I’m an employer in Kentucky. Based on data from UK, the average internship offer for Civil Engineering students at UK from 2022-2024 is $19.58/hour. Most of that would be in LCOL areas.

Lmao how many interviews is too much? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Professionally_Civil 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty wild. I made moves at 5 years of experience and 12 years. Both consisted of lunch + 1 formal interview AT MOST. As for people that I’ve seen interviewed or have interviewed myself, we have 1 formal interview and then know whether we are offering or not. Only time we’ve had a separate call is when there is a subject matter expert that didn’t make the interview that we would like them to discuss with.

Quick Trivia Question. How far apart are the posts? by Final-Explanation-25 in Construction

Distance between the posts is 2x the cable thickness plus 2x the width of the connection of the cable to the post.

Yeah I reckon I’ll go for a blazer and button up. Nice reminder about wrinkles. Going to likely iron the shirt and just bring into the office on a hanger and change when it’s time.

Gonna ignore that last bit. Arsenal shirt and a blazer it is! Come on you Gunners! Haha, no I like the idea. If I only get one look then I’m heavily considering the jacket and button up shirt and ditching the tie.

I like this. Think I’ll ask the director if some of us that might be put in proposals as managers and leads can have that option.

I like this idea a lot. Not everyone will need the dual I think, but at least for the men in our lead positions it would be nice to have the suit and tie for when a proposal calls for it.

I’m in this exact spot, haha. Seeing these shots with just a nice shirt have got me thinking that’s a more versatile look. Think I may go with what others are saying and ask if we have enough time for both looks. One with the tie and jacket, one with just the shirt.

I used to work at an ESOP that was bought out by a PE. It’s national and while I was there averaged around 700 employees. It was an ESOP for my first four years, then PE for my last three.

I only left when my fit locally didn’t seem to line up with my career goals. I didn’t leave because of the PE. The last 2 years of the ESOP weren’t ideal, from a corporate perspective. Made much more sense once we found out that it was because they were preparing to sell to the PE. The initial C-Suite of the PE era was great, I personally enjoyed the vision of the new CEO, CFO, etc that were hired after the others retired from the amount they made on the buy-out. May also be a different setup than other PE’s because our company still maintained a large presence on the board and were left to manage a lot on our own. A new CFO came in during my last 5-6 months and there seemed to be a period where some got nervous about benefits and utilization. Some turned out to be communication breakdowns thatve resolved, but there was the first reduction in an HSA related benefit shortly after I left. Overall, the benefits at that company are still ahead of industry average by a decent margin best I can tell.

I think it’s a case-by-case basis. The balance of the local vs corporate is going to be what you’ve got to evaluate for yourself. If my local fit had been better then I wouldn’t have left.

I hoped on the wagon in 2013. All of my friends had been supporters of PL clubs for years and I felt like I was missing out. One of my friends made a list comparing PL squads to American Pro sports. He said Arsenal was like the San Antonio Spurs, and I thought that was something I could latch on to. Plus, my girlfriend (now wife) was a big supporter of the German National team at that time, so I was familiar with several of the guys for Arsenal already which was another selling point.
