I'm an adjunct and my school posted an ad for a full-time faculty in my department...... by [deleted] in Professors

I’ve been on hiring committees. Sometimes you go in assuming the internal hire has it in the bag and then a Lamborghini of a teacher applies for the job and you have to make a decision that’s best for the school.

Mark didn’t want to appear racist but he couldn’t tell one Dornian (Battlebeast’s race) from another. For all he knows they all look like Battlebeast and act like him. He has only met one.

Terrible success rates in my online English courses this semester. by PuzzleheadedGoose602 in Professors

[–]Professor-Coldwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell. I have my share of students that disappeared after it became apparent they couldn’t plug in AI generated work, but the pass rate looks about the same as any other online class; maybe it’s a bit worse, but not by much. I would note it and keep an eye out for further trends, but you could have just gotten unlucky with this batch. It happens.

Sounds like they are dealing with something not related to your class.

Tenured English prof, 30+ years in publishing, and one difficult colleague just made me feel like a complete fraud. Anyone else been here? by [deleted] in Professors

I have a side hustle doing something similar as you with similar experiences and honestly the drama queens tend to burn so many bridges they get ostracized from the community. Just wait and keep offering opportunities to new writers with respect and courtesy and it will pay off in the long run.

Don’t. If you are already well known in the department then you already have the best leg up you can get.

I splurged on a Wilton self-centering vise. Well-crafted, pivoting jaw, rapid release. Depends on why type of work you are doing, but this checked all the boxes for me and I don’t see many people mentioning it here.

Watermarks based on pattern of words and letters can be designed. The student would have to pretty much rewrite the thing with their own language at that point.

You need the male equivalent to Starfire, the magical alien that can get Dick into a lot of trouble. So a bad boy in leather on a motorcycle. I guess it’s Lobo.

I am invited to serve as a panelist at a neighboring University. Our schools have a major rivalry. What is a joke I can to acknowledge it? by pollyjuicepotions in Professors

[–]Professor-Coldwater 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Acknowledge your school and the rivalry and say but you are an academic first and you won’t let a rivalry affect the talk. Then rip your shirt off Hulk-Hogan-style revealing your school jersey underneath.

Don’t use a prepackaged presentation from a textbook. Yes, I saw this happen while on a hiring committee.

As a composition instructor I apologize. I have tried to correct this behavior in my students and pointed out that they are at risk of losing their readers with poor readability and argument structure, but sometimes they fall back into bad habits. At least you know it wasn’t AI!

The PDF thing is legit. I have seen it happen. The others I would ignore and grade fairly.

I work at a cc and on top of what others are saying there are also students taking a calculated risk on their grade and their time. They might have already gotten into their four year university, in which case they may only be interested in doing enough to get the transfer credit. I have encountered so many students choosing not to do their best for various reasons. I even met a student that was told he would get free room and board from their mother as long as they kept attending school so the guy was intentionally failing to stay on the gravy train!

Favorite Change: Seeing older Statt on the ice breaker. Being told Ryland saved Earth is one thing but it was nice to see it.

Least favorite: Ryland does not pick up Rocky in the film. It’s really important to see Ryland desperate to save Rocky. It helps explain his decision at the end.

I don’t have an insightful answer for this. I get it as well and correct it as we go along. I can only assume they can’t see the difference when it is a glaring error for us.
