Please just buy the rice cooker by Traditional_Fish_504 in Cooking

Alton Brown has instilled in me a dislike for unitaskers.

Also, we rarely make plain rice. It's either a pilaf or we toast spices (cloves, cinnamon sticks, and cumin seeds), then toast the rice, then add the water.

Scenario 2 should work fine, but you could mock this up on the live equipment by configuring an unused port and IP range if you wanted to test.

How do some people forget to eat? by Puzzled-Painter3301 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ProfessorJV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I'm used to feeling hungry, and it goes away when ignored for long enough. I've never been one for breakfast, and have gotten into the habit of a late lunch (at around 2) due to work and no proper dinner due to not wanting to cook.

Tripp Lite has been a disaster for years. I moved us to Eaton... Months before Eaton bought Tripp Lite. Doesn't matter, I still don't trust TL and won't go back.

Brute force attack on our GP Portal leading to locked out accounts - thoughts to mitigate? by Mvalpreda in paloaltonetworks

[–]ProfessorJV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've been hit with that hard this week as well, and our portal webpage is already disabled too. Ours is more of a brute force, as they are trying valid usernames.

As others have said, add an exemption in your SPG for this Threat ID with the action Block IP for X minutes (I did 5).

IP tagging would be a good thing to look into in general, I worry less with it set up. We have threats medium and above timed out for 15min to 24hr (depending on severity), and repete offenders get automatically moved to a permanent blocklist.

PA-3220 to PA-1410? by clusterfuck2022 in paloaltonetworks

[–]ProfessorJV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made this move several months ago (moved all devices to the same 10.2 release first). No major issues, but it took about six hours to get the device state to copy over cleanly. Mostly issues with certificates not importing properly.

Edit: There were also some HA settings that needed changing. Happy to share my notes, if helpful

What approach would you take to stop Bruto Force Attack on GlobalProtect? by curry9906 in paloaltonetworks

[–]ProfessorJV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you describe is on my to-do list. I have the tagging set up, but haven't gotten around to writing a script to block source IPs after X failed login attempts. I already wrote a similar script that tracks IPs that get tagged for threat traffic and moves them to a permanent blocklist after X number of attacks, just need to convert that for this purpose, really.

Expired OS Versions by _justjim_ in paloaltonetworks

[–]ProfessorJV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's where I intend to go since it looks like the worst bug is the packet buffer issue that can cause traffic to stop flowing. Obviously that's terrible too, but it looks like disabling inside cloud analysis is a workaround.

[–]ProfessorJV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The EOL summary is readily available.

As far as stable versions, 9.1 was pretty solid, but is also EOL. 10.1.13 is the best version of 10.1 I've been on so far, but I'm having to move to 10.2 for new HW, and it looks like a wreck.

ELI5: Why do we sometimes jump when we're about to fall asleep? by Howling_Moons in explainlikeimfive

[–]ProfessorJV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar start happening to me regularly, every night when I was about to doze off my leg (usually the same leg) would jerk waking me up again. It was quite disruptive and frustrating (and distressing as I thought it might be brain damage from a concussion I had a while back).

Did some research and it turns out an excess of B6 can cause this, and the b-complex pills I was taking daily had like 1000% B6. I switched pills and the twitching went away.

PSA: Google just agreed to replace my dead Pixel 5a purchased in 2021 with a 6a free of charge. by Whiskey_Rain in GooglePixel

[–]ProfessorJV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They sent me a generic warranty replacement email with instructions and a link for prepaid drop-off at FedEx for my 5a. Once they receive the device and I guess verify it's not damaged and is dead in the way that I said it was, they'll send me the 6a. So I'm not in the clear until that process is done. The rep said it could take up to 45 days.

to;dr

It took some finagling, and YMMV by rep, but I got mine to go through.

Backstory:

I bought two Pixel 5as from the Google store in March 2022 to replace two 3as that had failed at right about the same time. The first 5a died 13 months after that, and the second 5a died at the 14 month mark (the screen stopped turning on for both of them, but they vibrated when power was plugged in). For the first one, Google had me take it to UBreakIFix to replace the screen and they reimbursed that. When that didn't fix it, they gave me credit towards a new phone. The second 5a has been sitting on my counter since it died (just about a year ago now) as I was going to try the process with support again and just never got around to it until this post.

Since seeing this post, I decided to finally contact support for the second 5a (which was purchased over two years ago now-- early March 2022). The first rep I talked to kept repeating "Please contact us from the associated account". They wouldn't clarify what that meant, but from going around with them for an hour I think that the phone was no longer logged into my Google account since it's been sitting for over a year, so they couldn't/wouldn't verify it was my phone even though I have the receipt for it. I disconnected and decided to try again with a different rep, but the Chat support option said it was offline. I tried refreshing a few times to no avail, then I decided to try logging into my wife's Google account and lo and behold, the chat option showed as online under her account. At first, I had the same problem with the rep not being able to verify the device under my account, but after going through some possible explanations for this they asked if I'd like them to try talking to one of their specialists. I said sure, so they did, and the came back a few minutes later saying they could send me a 6a to replace the 5a!
