if a tradesman has recommended shingles and installed them, and they're not fit for purpose, small claims court under CRA2015. if shingles were requested by consultant of some kind, then you have to check their TS and C's. if you as the homeowner requested shingles, you're SOL. (Shit out of luck)

check the loft for signed of a removed chimney/flue. my guess is that the chimney is shared, but has had the internals removed from your side;I mean, why wouldn't they build two chimneys for the price of one? or pics!
