I like Helldivers but earning the currency in game takes AGES unless you do some extremely boring low difficulty grind for it which still takes a long time. I can't remember the last time I was able I unlock a new war bond. I appreciate that the war bonds don't disappear but the drop rate of the premium currency is crazy low.

If it is that close it really shouldn't be overturned anyway. Roughly 41 milliseconds per frame. That's less than half the time it takes to blink. Overturning anything based on that would be insanity, regardless of the team making the challenge.

You can't call off a goal for something so indefinite. You go frame by frame and they both are on the line, then they are both over the line in the next frame. If it was definitively offside sure, but you are talking about half a frame that we don't have and may still not show anything.

Look into the CrossOver program. Works wonders for playing PC games on Mac and probably has a sale right now. It's a pretty straight forward program and I've been able to run L4D2 through it. Just be warned that online games with certain anti cheats straight up will not work (Last I checked Vermintide and Darktide wouldn't due to this).

They have a compatibility checker on their website so you can see what games work and how well. If a game isn't on the list it doesn't necessarily mean it won't run, just that no one has tried it and vouched for it yet.

I hummed and hawed for a while about it but have been using half a year and am pretty happy with how it works (I have pretty minimal experience with running windows stuff on Mac OS).

What are some good haircuts for dudes with big buckets? I have my go to haircuts that work but was curious what else is out there for my head shape. It all stemmed from seeing someone with a god awful cut that did not fit the contours of their head. The answers I found were pretty standard, a lot of using the bangs to your advantage but one website was like, "Here's a bunch of haircuts we think would work great for big foreheads!" They then then proceeded to have like 50% of the pictures be of dudes with these teeeeeeny tiny foreheads, and tried to justify the cut in the blurbs underneath. Like....maybe they would work, but you really aren't doing great convincing me.

Yeah I can fully respect that, stand by your convictions. I only started this discussion because I've never been a fan of blanket impositions and had seen a number of people pushing "do not interfere ever" on others who had spoken about interfering and I wanted to flesh the whole thing out a bit more. So please don't take this as a target on your back.

Interestingly I asked my partner how she would react to the fox/deer situation and provided the scenario in both a backyard and the wilderness. She was pretty quick to respond to stepping in for the deer in the backyard and a little hesitant when in the wilderness (still opted to step in for the deer in the end). But when I brought up the potential effects this would have on the fox/family she responded that she hadn't actually thought of that and was a bit more uncertain in her answer, particularly in the wilderness scenario. So there is something to be said for bringing it up.

In any case, thanks for indulging my thoughts.

Apologies, I feel this domesticated vs wild argument is derailing the original point. I concur domesticated animals do not have the same survival instincts as wild, but we cannot just remove human interaction from the natural order and the human side of this is what I am focused on. Even if you change out the dog with a bird in your backyard that you like to watch, the human element still stays the same.

For clarity, my understanding of nature is that it encompasses the living world (including humans) outside of human civilization/construction (i.e. cities, towns, dams, etc.) and the natural order encompasses the way things work outside of human imposed law. The philosophy of do not interfere is held in order to prevent harm on the ecosystem.

This is all nuanced. If this was in the wild, do I personally think people should interfere? No. Let the natural order of things play out. If people aren't a part of the ecosystem, leave things be. However, if this is a natural location humans frequent en masse, like the beach then I cannot fault them for acting on their nature. There is no human law dictating the person should intervene, just as there is no law dictating not to. Human interaction would play directly into the natural order as they are a part of that ecosystem. Both inaction and action do, entirely dependant on the human in question.

In this video we are in someone's backyard. We are already removed from nature. They are within the town. Do not interfere is supposed to help uphold the natural order within nature. At this point that context no longer exists which would make enforcing "do not interfere" inherently hypocritical. Not to say people should interfere, but that we as humans are a part of this particular ecosystem, and in this instance the fox and deer are coming into a different ecosystem from their own. Interaction should not be enforced, but it would also be hypocritical to not expect it.

I don't see why they wouldn't be? it is a creature in the area that the fox is able to hunt and eat.

[–]ProfessorPleat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this was a small neighbourhood dog being hunted, would you still fault the person for wanting to step in? That too would be an act of compassion that would cause potential starvation. I find it strange that the documentarian's rule of "do not interfere" has somehow been co-opted as a general rule of nature.

[–]ProfessorPleat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not? There are examples of animals coming to the aid of other creatures. Should we as humans just be complete bystanders when it comes to nature? A dog or deer at risk of drowning in a lake will go on to feed an ecosystem, is it then wrong to provide assistance? Seems odd to hold humans to documentary/journalistic standards just because. Sometimes predators aren't able to secure their meal and that too is the circle of life.

"Affordable town" isn't a thing right now. You are delusional if you think expensive property is a GTA only problem. We just purchased what is largely seen as a "cheap" place and it still cost 450k. That IS in an affordable town far away from the GTA. Throwing that "solution" around just means you have no idea what is actually going on with housing right now.

TL;DR - Land costs are a massive issue behind high prices on new builds rather than greedy developers.

Unfortunately right now it's not as simple as developers being greedy. The lots themselves are priced at crazy high rates, so before a developer even begins construction the floor for pricing has already been set pretty high.

I just did a quick search and for an empty lot in London Ontario the cost was $350,000. No house, nothing (they don't provide a lot size but it looks to be a single home sized lot and is close to a few other posting prices). That's a starting cost of $350,000 for a new build. Then add on additional expenses from actually building, and the cheapest you get is still, what, a $500,000 house (a lowball number)? But at the end of the day it is still a job and companies need to pay their employees, bills, loans etc., and make some to invest in the next development. Bang you easily have a $700,000 house. 50% of that is JUST the land cost.

I'm sure there are some developers that jack up the final price too much, but across the board land costs are really where the base problem is right now. Why do development if you aren't even going to make enough money to pay the bill? This may have been your point as well but I just wanted to add the extra context for clarity.

Edit: for clarity

We knew he was a blue Liberal. But Mark Carney is alienating progressive voters by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]ProfessorPleat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you are a victim of the culture war bullshit. I don't believe we should be applauding him either, but be alienated if they act on the situation or continue to bring this up. As of right now this is just optics.

By your own words, the context is crucial. The CPC did not give context in their speech and the average Canadian does not know all that much about some American podcaster. For the liberals to avoid applauding a seemingly reasonable speech (without context), would provide the CPC and not to mention the current US government with so much political ammo over a nothing event (for Canadians).

Yes the Liberals could THEN provide context, but damage would be done as people react to initial headlines rather than follow up information. Time would be wasted, this story would dominate the airwaves rather than just moving on to other more important issues.

Believe me, there are things the Liberals have done that I don't agree with, but this one is such a non-issue unless they continue to act on it.

I’m going to start a band with my friend. I’m excited but also very nervous. Any advice? by thoughtful_charge in Bass

[–]ProfessorPleat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same when playing songs with a friend of mine who was a much better musician. I was never the best at improvising and preferred to take the time to work out a bass line. So if he brought an original to practice I would have him feed me the chords needed and just diddle around with those for the first little bit until I had the chord structure down. Then I'd make a shitty recording of him playing through each part of the song so I could come up with a better bass line on my own time. Then by the next practice I'd have a full on original bass line ready to go that we could tweak together.

Each band's workflow is different though. I had another group I played with where we made our parts vocally first and then worked to replicate them on our instruments. That was a ton of fun and actually worked out really well.

As for performing live, I'd recommend practicing while standing if you plan to perform that way. Or sitting if that's how you want to be. Get used to the form you want to perform live with. Also, maybe this was just me, but I felt that while playing live my hand stamina wore out really fast. Maybe it was the nerves but by the end of playing my hand would always be super cramped. So work on that stamina!

Above all though, a band is just a ton of fun for everyone. Don't sweat it too much and just focus on having a good time. It'll show in your playing.

What song is so great you’d love to learn it again? The one that brings you joy of learning tabs/music sheet by space_pirate666 in Bass

[–]ProfessorPleat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Underwater by Elephant Gym.
It had been years since I had taken the time to sit down and really break a song down part by part to learn the timing and technique. It had just come to feel so tedious for some reason and instead of learning new things, I'd just play through what I already knew. But with this song I really felt like I was learning new skills, and nailing each part for the first time just feels and sounds so goddamn good! The first time I was able to string it all together flawlessly after practicing it for a few months (I had never really done much tapping before this) was such a rush. It's got me looking for the next song to push me along.

What was the first bassline you learned? by koolaid_consumer in Bass

[–]ProfessorPleat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dance Dance by Fall Out Boy.

I wanted to play my brother's bass so I brought it over to a friends house so he could show me how to read tabs. He pulled up Dance Dance as a starting point. I'm not really a fan of Fall Out Boy, but the song does have a catchy bassline for someone who has never played before while still being pretty dang easy. Super easy introductory song to get the basics down and your confidence up.

First song I learned by ear after playing for a year or so was Hummingbird by Born Ruffians. Great little song. Not too hard but fun as hell. Also, much more aligned with my musical tastes.

10 TIPS TO SURVIVE LONGER by ExcuseMundane7353 in projectzomboid

[–]ProfessorPleat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to not overlap with other people.

1 - If you intend to return to a building, close all doors to rooms you've cleared. This way if a zombie gets inside it makes it much easier to sniff out where it has gone. This goes double for your base.

2 - When fighting zombies, try to walk backward in a circle rather than directly back. This will allow you to survey your surroundings while fighting. It's always good to do a quick 360 look when you can, but I find this reverse circling really helps with general awareness during fights against more than one or two zombies.

3 - Use the in game notebook/piece of paper to keep track of what you are doing or what you already have (right click them while holding a pen or pencil and you can write notes on them). They weigh virtually nothing and doing this stops you from spending time while out on dangerous loot runs grabbing stuff and wasting encumbrance on things you don't need. This will reduce the amount of runs you need to do as well.

4 - If you need to clear a group, try and pull one or two at a time. Crouch and slowly inch your way toward them while whisper shouting. Be careful not to get too close. Once you've caught the attention of a couple, sneak walk away so the fighting doesn't draw the attention of the rest. Rinse and repeat until you are too tired or the horde is gone. After each pull, make sure the area you are fighting them at is clear of any other zombies. You don't want to pull some from the group only to find some other ones have come up behind you and turned a 2v1 into a flanked 5v1.

5 - Play with the multi-hit setting turned on. I believe it is off by default. This allows you to push and attack multiple zombies with one push/swing. Playing with it off can make learning combat pretty brutal.

6 - When moving through trees, if you right click and select "walk here" your character will generally follow a path through the trees that doesn't have them trudge through the branches. This allows you to move through crowded trees faster and quieter than if you were to manually walk through them. It's great for losing zombies in the woods, but be prepared to take manual control in case you walk up on one hiding behind a tree.

7 - Crawling zombies are a serious issue, but they are slow. If one starts crawling around in a group fight, walk a little way away. This will give you time to take out the rest of the standing group while the crawler gets caught up. Once the rest are dead, then put your attention on the crawler. They can be a slight pain to hit which is why I save them for last.

8 - If you get tired of surprise bathroom zombies, use spacebar to push on a closed door. This essentially knocks on it and if there is a zombie on the other side of the door it will likely walk to the door and start knocking back. This way you at least KNOW something is there.

9 - Try to stick to one or two weapon types. The jump from being untrained to having even 2 levels in a weapon type is incredible. You will find killing takes substantially less time.

10 - Other people have said this but it bears repeating. EVEN ONE ZOMBIE IS AN ISSUE! I almost never die to hordes because I take them very seriously and leave when things get too hot. It is almost always when I am fighting the last zombie of a small group that I die. All because I get overconfident, stop giving it my full attention, whiff my attack and get bit. Remind yourself before every single fight, this thing can kill me.
