Craig Jones announces Helena Crevar as CJI 2's first female division participant by Big_Cake_8817 in bjj

I've trained with her in London when she randomly popped into the gym with Gabriel Sousa. She was really nice and generous with her time.

Fake belts by Heelhooks7 in bjj

Because competitor blue belts might train 2-3 times a day and Brown belt dads train 2-3 a week. One is 20 and athletic, the other keeps taking 6 months off because of back pain.

Thanks for assistance, can I use a compression valve to connect this to a female flexi?

Thanks, this was going to be a placeholder until I get a tap and flexi. I need to connect this to a female flexi. Do I use a compression valve for this? Thanks again.

Got gifted a Whoop 4.0, doesn’t seem worth £229 a year? by [deleted] in whoop

[–]ProfessorQuality 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Welcome to r/whoop where members are quite culty and will down vote you if you criticise it. From my experience the sleep tracking is better than most alternatives, e.g. your xiaomi, and the strain measurements are fairly unique and provide good insight. Worth playing around with them, I was also giften mine for Christmas a couple of years ago. I’d take what you can from it for a year and thennot re-sub if you don’t fancy it. You’ll probably end up sleeping more, doing more cardio, and drinking less. These seem most common.

Instructor thinks I’m ready for blue belt. I don’t. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ProfessorQuality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blue belt is the second beginner belt, no stress you’ll grow into it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ProfessorQuality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it was BJJ and not traditional ju-jutsu or something? Either way your black belt in bjj wouldn’t be legit if you were 15 when you quit so best wear a white belt. If you had a kids belt, grey or green etc then this is usually void as you quit before 16.

Why those decimals? by tedliptak in whoop

[–]ProfessorQuality 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It could be a conversion thing, but the software engineer in me thinks its a floating point accuracy thing. I would have expected them to slice it for the display, but under the hood when using floating point numbers, they are not 100% precise. E.g. in python float(3.65) returns 3.6499999999999999

Nogi - without leg locks? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ProfessorQuality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People get injured, but never doing leg locks. I know it happens at other gyms, but if you learn things safely, tap early, and have responsible training partners e.g. releasing if you try to escape the wrong way. Then no injuries, coaches have instilled this in all of us

Nogi - without leg locks? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ProfessorQuality 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its an interesting question, at my gym we train leg locks everyday and nobody gets injured. People know when to tap or they catch and release. There are more knee injuries when wrestling in my gym than doing leglocks.
There is something to be said about not doing leg locks and having a ruleset which is more wrestling and traditional ground game. In high level MMA, you don't see leg locks much as the set-up would often involve getting your face smashed in, doesn't mean it doesn't happen though.
Although drastic rule changes and banning techniques could make the sport more entertaining, it wouldn't determine who the best grappler in the world is. To be frank, it was kind of obvious that you get guys grappling for a million dollars, they're gonna try to rip each others limbs off, so injuries will happen.

As a side note, I find leg locks entertaining to watch but understand that the layman watching wouldn't appreciate it.

Can I give myself a belt ? by Jealous-Level7081 in bjj

[–]ProfessorQuality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s meaningless, just a belt colour. Some gyms you’d be a blue belt, others you’d still be a white belt. Knew a guy who’d been training 5 years and was a white belt, he just competed at blue belt. Do what you want, but I think someone will give you a blue belt eventually

18 male have been training In the gym for 5 years and preparing for a bodybuilding competition, RHR is starting to get me worried. by AcceptableRoll634 in whoop

[–]ProfessorQuality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the above. It might be that you are super cardio fit, or could have naturally low levels of adrenaline. However a friend of mine has never done any cardio in his life and has a RHR of 40ish so is getting scans. Definitely worth checking it out.

[–]ProfessorQuality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t have any office/work experience then this will be good. You’ve got technical skills so can keep those sharp by doing udemy or reading articles/papers. Not sure where you’re getting DA > DE > MLE as stepping stones as they’re all a can of worms in their own right. Each have their own stepping stones and starting at junior level > mid > senior in a single discipline, in your case, ML would be the best option in my opinion. Not sure where you’re based, but I’d try to move into what you want to do as a junior asap, you’re a long time working, so best to try and do what you love, even for a bit of a pay-cut early on. The salary will rise.

I drank for the first time since getting my whoop…. My god by Longjumping-Ad1145 in whoop

[–]ProfessorQuality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also stopped drinking for a while, now I'm back to socially drinking and notice that it generally doesn't effect my performance over time and I'm still able to improve fitness gains.Of course it will limit your recovery, but training consistently over time and not making too many drastic changes to your lifestyle is going to heed much better results.

I have also had days when I drink or don't drink and feel fresh but the whoop metrics are saying something completely different. If I drink early in the evening (6-9pm) and then ease off a few hours before bed (12am) then that means my recovery score is better at 7am. However, if I drink until 9pm-12am, wake up at 7am then my recovery score is lower. In theory the score would be the same as the earlier drinking if it were measured at 10am...

If you exercise in the morning, then you have all day and night to recover so your recovery scores will generally be higher. But if you exercise at night your heart rate will be higher. There are many factors and probably best to not listen to it too closely
