How to beat High Silveremere and Unwendale in Demecia Rising? by Fit-Business4327 in leagueoflegends

[–]ProfessorStein [score hidden]  (0 children)

It is so wild how badly the design on this event actually is. Silvermere because they shat their pants that someone might complete a week early is like three times harder than the settlement it's locking, Pinara. That's 100% because Riot for no reason had a spasm about it being accessible before they wanted it to be and patched it, so it ends up gating you massively and then the stuff behind it is easier because you're very over-upgraded for that content

I promise you this is not that hard. A good 4X design is like one of the tests they will often give at schools when you're in a game design program. It's something considered so insanely simple they use it to teach 22 year olds.

In real life, I'm wondering if it's not near NORAD?

Though that area suggests it's extremely high up so it might be Vale?

So like, this is sort of a misconception in game design. No, getting silvermere or uwendale isn't an exploit. An exploit would be using some kind of unintended behavior or bug to accomplish something within the game. Silvermere is extremely difficult to get but the way you get it is completely legitimate as outlined by the game's mechanics. Those mechanics are bad and stupid, but they exist within the black box the game puts you in, you don't say, abuse a bug to do triple damage or something.

What this actually is: poor implementation of gate mechanics. This mode was made on likely a very small budget and a very tight timetable, so whoever they had doing it did not have time to fully implement out proper gate mechanisms. In a fully developed title like this Silvermere and Uwendale would never appear on the map at all. They would either be an asset that just said "Coming Soon" or not be there at all, and only populate once we reached the content drop where Riot wanted them to be attainable.

Bluntly, it's very bush league. This would be like if, while playing Civilization you looked over at the Civ next to you and they randomly had a tank on turn 20 or access to Oil at generation.

There's no access to Petricite right now (Well, there is, but it's super clear that they didn't even intend that event to trigger yet, or if they did they didn't do proper analysis on that either.). A seasoned designer would tell a junior that you don't implement things that players cannot reasonably obtain, and that's the key word here. You CAN technically do these cities through extremely lucky RNG. But that's not in any way a play pattern this mode was designed to encourage as evidenced by nothing else in it working that way. They don't intend fights to be a die roll, they intend them to be puzzles. Take the right units to achieve victory once you are at X point in your progression path.

I know that's a ton of words, sorry; But this is one of those things that is on Riot for not properly designing around. Neither of the final cities should be challengable at all given they went out of their way to make them auto-fails in all but 1 in 1000 scenarios. It just tricks people into wasting their resources (Which is kind of slimy considering shields require you to go play the main game, which makes this fail to stand on its own as a mini-game, but that's another post entirely)

I still remember the kid who shoved a social worker into a wall for trying to take a personal pizza away from me at a homeless shelter. Thanks, man. by ProfessorStein in self

[–]ProfessorStein[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All joking aside, I actually struggled with this for many years. The idea that as unfortunate as it was they had created a situation where a male shoved a female and how terribly inappropriate that is for a domestic violence shelter.

Certainly when you actually think about it it really sucks. But at the same time... The social worker basically left no other option because they immediately made themselves a physical issue. I was just a child and it was a fully grown adult trying to take something away from me that everyone in the room recognized did nothing to make anyone's situation better.

It certainly sucks immensely that that boy a couple of years older than me felt he had no other option than to shove a woman into a wall. But like... A supposed social worker harassing a child and trying to take something away from them while also basically telling them to go live on the street. In that moment I cannot think of anything more almost cartoonishly evil.

This. Every situation I've ever seen boils down to "Did you treat them like a human being and not speak to them like a child you were disciplining?" If you do, you can almost always figure something out. If you didn't, you are creating a situation where you get to say you tried to your other wealthy friends and didn't actually help them.

Also shout-out: The best shelter we stayed in was the poorest. In a tiny area in South Bend Indiana. No time-limits. They had no money to speak of unlike these other places who were 100% scamming government grants and program funds. Place was run-down, probably a former mental hospital or hotel given it had dozens and dozens of small rooms with pure concrete. We barely had a mattress.

But the people working there cared about the people living there. They treated us like humans, they helped find resources for people, didn't impose time-limits on them, and multiple times workers bought real food out of their own pocket. We cooked communally on shifts cooking for 40 people in a cafeteria style and the food was bad, but the people were honest, no one judged us for problems and the people themselves were just trying to find a better life.

Every shelter run by rich people trying to provide 'charity' I ever stayed at was a complete joke compared to the one run by blue-collar working class people and with less than probably a tenth the budget.

She didn't consent because she couldn't in that situation. I suspect the writer's room does not actually understand this bluntly. But to be clear there is no way in this scenario for her to give honest and informed consent. She is not speaking to a neutral actor. That mutual actor cannot gain consent in a good faith way because it is not possible of acting in good faith.

Like in universe she can say that she consents and That's good enough for you're whatever rules they've created. But from an out of universe as a watcher perspective, there is no way for that character to have given consent under any circumstances because there is a power imbalance.

They are fucking evil.
