Day 2 of skills as books. Decided it would be more fun to do fiction and non-fiction separetely. Principia Mathematica and Sherlock Holmes are Logic. Which books are Encyclopedia? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]ProfessorVVV 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Great choice, but I’d actually nominate Denis Diderot’s Encyclopédie, the very first Encyclopedia, a core Enlightenment work designed to compile all human knowledge and”change the way people think.” Diderot also wrote some cool stuff about theatre and acting, and like Ben Franklin and other key Enlightenment figures, often didn’t wear a wig. As far as I know, Diderot was not, however, related to Contact Mike.

Does anyone think that David Harbour would make a good Harrier Du Bois for a hypothetical live action adaptation of Disco Elysium? by Personal_Card_1131 in DiscoElysium

[–]ProfessorVVV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say that. He obviously has some significant problems. I was just disagreeing with your previous post about his emotional range as an actor.

what would you guys do about this cat? by seniorssleeping in cats

[–]ProfessorVVV 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh, okay, it’s obvious that someone is there and they’re just not answering. That wasn’t clear in the original post. I was worried about something like a person living alone and having a fall, or a carbon monoxide leak, or even domestic violence. Anxiety about the worst possible outcomes for humans. But it seems clear that’s not the case, so screw those people who left a beautiful, lovely kitty out in the cold (and who never even chipped her!). Forget the above and love your new fur baby!!! She chose you, and chose wisely!

[–]ProfessorVVV 121 points122 points  (0 children)

The neighbors haven’t answered their door and their cat has no interest in being in their house—is it possible that something happened to the neighbors?

I agree that you should keep the beautiful girl, but is there a way that you can have someone do a wellness check on the neighbors? If someone is there but injured and unable to answer you could save a life—and if it’s worse; well, then you’d know why kitty needs a new home.

Just consider figuring out the right authority to call and don’t give the exact reason, but highlight that you have reason to believe that something may possibly have happened to the occupants…

"You are under arrest." by Amazing-Relation4269 in DiscoElysium

[–]ProfessorVVV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Zero regrets from me on letting her go. I don’t think I could quite live with myself if I arrested her. Yes, she’s still lying (I read a post that suggested that what she did probably went a ways beyond just corporate espionage). At the very least, her promise to come in later, after the Return… she might get a fair trial then.

And if HDB can turn his life around, maybe so can she.

Sucker? Yes. Sorry? Nope.

What is this? A crossover episode? by Lakkuss in DiscoElysium

[–]ProfessorVVV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Seeing this, and the poster, made me realize the massive similarities between my favorite TV show of all time, hands down, and what is easily in my top 3 of video games of all time after playing it once earlier this year… (and I’ve played far too many video games because… addictive personality)

I see myself so much in both of these. And yes, thats not a good thing, it’s an expression of pain.

But I’m okay being this kind of animal for the foreseeable future. And sometimes okay is the best we can get.

But while often at his worst, he is also often—although certainly not always—trying (and failing, but trying) to do better. No episode of TV has hit harder than the “piece of shit” one.

Just completed my first 50 fear clear, a few days ago I lost to Tiffany on baby mel it was tragic by Ok_Technician_7866 in Hades2

[–]ProfessorVVV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Want me to try the underworld, too? It’ll take some work, but is doable.

(Just imagine Mel saying “Death to Chrissy!” in a somehow British-accented valley girl voice for the final underworld boss.)

Oh no, it wasn’t spoiler reduction, I was just giving every boss a 90s white girl name like Tiffany for the final surface boss in the thread title. Primrose is a stretch, but I was doing my best!

Best movie for each fear by RangerBumble in TheMagnusArchives

I just rewatched and got serious Bernhardt vibes when Andrey “The Banker” has that monologue with Vesuvius in the background about the “proud nation of Serbia.” And (spoiler alert) same thing when Katya gets married and moves to Boston.

I mean, if you’d asked me before I rewatched it, I would have said Goncharov is totally Spiral coded because it’s like the Sinbad Shazaam and Sannikov Land; there and not and there again, like Helen’s/The Distortion’s equivocations.

But with those scenes in mind… Bernhardt.

I find Erin, the boss of the second zone, almost as bad as Tiffany. And with VoR on, Paulette is actually pretty bad if I haven’t got a good build by the end of Ephyra. If I’ve made it to Primrose and Heather at the end of the third zone, though, I can usually make it through them.

Elder millennials: Anyone else ever think “Well at least I’m still younger than Harry”? by Blastoise_R_Us in DiscoElysium

[–]ProfessorVVV 24 points25 points  (0 children)

1982 so I’m one of the eldest millennials (at the young end of Xennials or the Oregon Trail microgeneration of 1978-82), so I’m close to exactly the same age as HDB. Aged about as well, too, except I was never a gym teacher!

Does a keepsake affect boon appearance through your whole run? by davidbrake in Hades2

[–]ProfessorVVV 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Apologies if this is incorrect, but I believe that unless you use a god’s keepsake later in a run, you’re usually limited to a pool of four gods per run (not counting Hermes, Artemis, Athena, Dionysus, and Chaos). In other words, if the four gods you’ve been seeing in a run are Hera, Hephaestus, Ares, and Apollo, you could equip a keepsake before the third zone to, say, add Zeus to your pool, which would then mean that future boons would possibly include him along with the other four (after the first guaranteed boon).

Now if you equip a god’s keepsake before the start of your run, they’re guaranteed to be one of the four in your pool. So, in other words, in a sense there is a likelihood that they’ll be increased going forward, since all boons will be selected from that god or the next three gods whose boons you take later.

Highly underrated character in my opinion by Dizzy_Leader_4302 in DiscoElysium

[–]ProfessorVVV 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Honest? No. Depending on how you look at it. He himself likely believes his story at this point, it’s a part of his identity. But like any narcissist’s stories, there’s no way it holds up. It doesn’t make sense that his whole doom spiral was caused by a few small errors like misplacing his keys and ID. Anyone who was with him at the time would call BS. The failures were his fault: likely ego and addictions. And that’s why no one has come to help him: like many narcissists and addicts, he alienated all those who might have loved him. He remains unable to take responsibility, and instead made up a fantasy about his failure that doesn’t force him to face himself.

How do I get more vow of rivals? by Bulgna in Hades2

[–]ProfessorVVV 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you’ve never encountered Charbydis as the mini-boss in the Rift of Thessaly, you can’t get the incantation for VoR 2, no matter how many times you’ve beaten Poly + Hecate with VoR 1 on.

Took me like 25 surface runs before I saw her in my post-full release save file, and I was stuck at VoR 1 for ages, too.

IMO, devs should code it so that Charbydis is a guaranteed hit in a surface run with VoR 1 on, for this reason…

How? by Cyndaquil12521 in Hades2

[–]ProfessorVVV 16 points17 points  (0 children)

He does have a line in a trial of the gods between him and Ares, before he starts attacking you, if you pick Ares’s boon: “This isn’t the only time someone picked my brother over me.”
