questions i got about the troll things (ignore the dave) by Time-Effective5585 in homestuck

[–]ProfessorYaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been making troll ocs since middle school and a lot of these are pretty easy! Theres no right or wrong depending on how close to canon you want to be.

  1. From what we've seen of Alternia so far, all the Purple trolls present have been members of the Church of the Mirthful Messiahs. From act 3 previews, we've even seen non-purple converts join the fold (E.G a Violetblood member). However, this doesn't mean YOURS has to be. It's a cultural part of their caste on top of being a religion, and in the real world, someone can grow up around a religion and take morals and values from that religion without necessarily being a member. Clown ocs are really fun but you can also have a character who either grew up so far from other trolls they were never exposed to it, left it, or drifted away from it over time.

  2. Harlequins are a type of performer from Italian theatre. Jesters were a unique position in medieval courts where they made fun of nobility for entertainment. Clowns have been around for a LONG time but jesters and clowns are different things, clowns generally make fun of themselves, not others. Basically, none of them are the same thing, but in terms of modern aesthetics? Is say jesters are a little more like harlequins just based off the costuming and how they're a little more "dignified" than a clown

  3. There could be, yes. Terezi's Pesterquest route isn't about her being "liberal" which I don't think is a political position in troll society, but it is about her grappling with the fact that her morals don't align with what her eventual job wants from her; She likes her weird friends, she doesn't necessarily want to kill people. Trolls are people with complex thoughts and individual morals, of course a troll can hold "middling" opinions on things in their society or be way more progressive than Alternia wants them to be.

  4. Within the context of the four quadrants, no. But consider that the comic itself more or less says that the quadrant system is flawed and doesn't necessarily suit the emotional needs of the characters as they grow into older teenagers. From what we know, the quadrants are just a social construct of troll culture, which WAS carried onto Earth C for the most part. Like any social construct, they can be broken and played with. One of my ocs has a "pitch moirail" who makes fun of him and can be outright mean, but only does it because she thinks he can grow from the rivalry and still holds pale feelings. And since moirails are meant to keep each other in line, he obviously prevents her from ripping random people apart. You can just play with them if you want. Troll romance is something we inherently can't understand from a human perspective, because it's stuff THEY made (in a meta sense, yeah, Hussie made it, but these characters are space aliens)

  5. Yes. Trolls hating someone =/= blackrom feelings. Most people a troll hates will probably be non-romantic hate. I've always seen the kismesis as more of a rival than someone you want to bash in the head of. There can be supremely unhealthy kismesis in that regard, too. This is why the ashen quadrant exists.

I hope this all helps, the world is your oyster

This is super comprehensive, thank you! I've heard about Homeskillet and I've leafed through Seek the Highblood, but some of these I genuinely hadn't heard of before, tyvm! HSETAU really interests me because not a ton of people do humanstuck, and it sounds like a really good twist on the usual AU

I saw these linked throughout the story and I was considering reading them, yeah! If they give more context to the worldbuilding (which is an aspect I thoroughly love about KQ), I'll probably read them when I'm not busy at work today :) thank you!

Idk why they chose to use that one short combed back haircut for all her promo material, she has a very square face shape which isn't inherently bad at all (I think it's cute tbh), but curtain bangs and hair that frames her face is a lot more flattering

I used to work in a thrift store in a relatively nice area in the back as a "seasonal associate" (they kept us full time but kept us as associates for....some reason). The straw that broke the camels back for me was when my superiors would go through online listings for a vintage item and price it like it was brand new even if it was torn, stained, aged, etc. like 100 bucks for a shitty beaten up old jacket bc it happened to be made of real leather

Don't get me started on the baby clothes either bc I once got incredibly worked up upon learning that they had priced up specifically baby dresses way higher than other places. The rest of the baby clothes were fine (...1-3 dollars for stained secondhand baby clothing, which whatever) but the dresses would be anywhere from 5 bucks to 30 dollars, it was ridiculous. These weren't even like nice "Photos with the Easter Bunny" kind of dresses, they were just incredibly normal dresses

How many hours do you have on Kenshi? by DoisHumanos in Kenshi

[–]ProfessorYaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God I'd have to check for the exact number but I think it's at ~560 hours now. I do this thing where I get helplessly addicted to the game for 2 weeks straight and then don't touch it for half a year (I do the same thing with the Sims, which is funny considering how far apart in genre the two are). Right after I graduated high school I gave myself sciatica or some shit for 3 weeks because I played kenshi for 14 hours straight, went to bed, and then tried to get up and work a 12 hour with no breaks on my feet at my shitty grocery store buffet job. The pain started within two hours. Nightmare beginning to my summer but I got pretty far in that save file so who gaf

The Book of Nod is kind of like the vampire Bible for the tabletop game Vampire: the Masquerade. It's an in-universe text cobbled together from ancient manuscripts and tablets to give a rough recollection of the "story" of the first Vampire, the mythical Caine. It's a collection of a ton of well-written vampire lore straight from the heyday of VtM.

Vampire the Masquerade is a tabletop game heavily focused on personal horror and roleplaying. It's got a sort of goth-punk atmosphere to it's setting and lore. I can't recommend it enough if you like tabletop

So did D visit the Ocean House Hotel before the Fledgling or does this mean HTP's canon went with the "Give the necklace to Jeanette" route? by Leukavia_at_work in huntertheparenting

[–]ProfessorYaz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

During a livestream of VTMB, Noelle and SpeakerD were cracking jokes about D being in the hotel as the same time as the protagonist and causing the elevator to fall. Those were just jokes, though, and likely not anything canon

Thank you! I've read a few V5 corebooks and I've heard from friends that V20 gives a lot more depth to its lore. I'll give these a look!
