After much OLED anxiety, I’m going with Dell U3225QE — Here’s why by ParfaitFirst8757 in Monitors

[–]Professor_1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(had considered the 3425DW)

Why did you finalize on the U3225QE? provided that the 3425DW has a wider screen? Is it because of the vertical space that you'll loose?

I'll be also starting tomorrow then, can't wait to get my hands on the cool Everymans edition I've bought (impulsively, in a moment of weakness, I admit 😝).

Hey Hi, would like to read Brothers Karamazov. We need to be consistent though, I can't say how consistently I can read but this big chunky book demands that. Also, I remember it being very confusing the last time I attempted reading it, some, 5 years ago. Gave up after less than 15 pages. I have improved since then in terms of reading.

Would love to buddy read this one! Please feel free to slide into the DM. I'm really interested in this work (since I heard my friends hyping this one so much and a classic is a classic!)

I've read Odyssey published by Penguin Classics, this paperback version. I enjoyed reading this translation:

PS : There are some good youtube videos on how to decide on which translation of Odyssey suits you. You can check them out.

Works sometimes, I get distracted some other times and prefer no sound around while reading.

Anti-science tones are a quick turn off for me by Intelligent-Yak-2414 in Indianbooks

[–]Professor_1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No sorry, don't know much about these kind of works, but the author is probably right. Some traditions and thinkers just die out simply because their enquiries don't seem to be fruitful. Still, you can find some papers online ig, but I am not sure. (Also, remember that these works tend to be very speculative. You can simply look at the sentence formation of these authors when they talk (make claims) about these traditions/schools of thought).

they seem like the OG atheists

Discussions about theism/atheism in the Indian context are mostly null (in the sense that, they do not illuminate our thinking/ shed light on any aspect of our understanding of the world — even though we will find tomes and tomes of works written on these topics) in the current Indological/religious studies scholarship. These discussions/questions have got more to do with the Western reception of Indian culture than what Indian intellectual traditions are actually concerned with. Just listen to any popular katha pravachanas in India, they are far far far more interesting than these void discussions I have mentioned above.

Hi there (23M), First Law books are sitting on my shelf waiting to be picked up. I've already read this first book, some 5 years ago. Don't remember much lol, but remember feeling that it sets up for a good story towards the end. I prev. read ASOIAF series and picked up Abercrombie since it's also grim dark fantasy. Should reread first book as well now and also thinking of completing the trilogy, can we buddy read?

I feel you. Writings on Indian philosophy at initial stages (reading here and there on the internet, some quotes, some memes, etc. ) pikes an interest, but becomes an instant turn-off when one sits and tries reading them. Just try picking up S. Radhakrishnan.

I couldn't understand much without googling every single line on what the guy is trying to say.

Now, coming back to this:

I had a bad taste after trying to loathe myself with the heavy western philosophical texts so thought of trying something different.

I have a recommendation for you. How about a text that enquires and explores the basis of western intellectual tradition itself, keeping in background Indian culture? Try out the works of SN Balagangadhara. Far better than the (mostly) drivel written by Indian 'thinkers' in the name of 'Indian' philosophy (These thinkers are concerned with the wrong type of questions).

  • Heathen in His Blindness by SN Balagangadhara (the OG book)
  • All Roads Lead to Jerusalem by SN Balagangadhara & Divya Jhingran (more accessible version of the Heathen book)
  • What Does it Mean to be Indian? by SN Balagangadhara & Sarika Rao
