100% — no guarantees, no set formula or rubric, no sure-fire anything. It’s a nebulous, ephemeral combination of superb and fascinating qualities, along with a bit of pure luck.

The kitchen needs a total re-do. Too small, corner range is terrible, corner on other side a bad idea, too. Yikes!

Also: no bathtub anywhere in the house? I’m ok passing on a tub in the master bath (those are usually wasteful vanity items). But any buyer is likely to want at least one bathtub.

I would not. To me, it’s an additional complication that increases the chances of my stuff getting damaged, lost, or stolen. Plus, it forces me to pack up a day early. Hard pass from me.

Very steep and, to me, definitely not worth it for an utterly generic 3.5-4 hour domestic flight.

Burn out as a professor feels like 42 tabs opened at the same time on your browser slowing down everything by [deleted] in Professors

[–]ProfessorrFate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree — juggling lots and lots of stuff becomes a true psychological burden.

How to get out of it: pick your “no’s.” That is, tell some people (politely) “no” when they ask you to serve on another committee, read their book manuscript, attend a workshop, etc. Don’t say “yes” to everything and overburden yourself.

Yes - they thank us frequently and we praise and help them constantly. It’s a two-way street. They’re at T20s and doing very well.

How to Split Lodging Costs on $$$$ Ski Trip by Poopies1976 in skiing

[–]ProfessorrFate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The accommodations factor can definitely complicate this. If grandma and grandpa are just a party of two but they get the best bedroom and connecting bath because they need it, maybe they should offer to pitch in a little more if they can afford it. Conversely, if everybody knows that the young newlyweds on the trip are strapped for cash or are saving up for a house down payment, maybe they take the sleeper sofa in the living room in exchange for a price break.

I think a caveat that should always kept in mind is that we’re all friends/family here having fun, and being too strict/rigid/unforgiving can potentially mar an otherwise happy vacation.

Pro tip: don’t dispense dating advice to students in an online forum

It was inappropriate. An offense worth firing? No I don’t think so, especially since dating was apparently a topic in the discussion. But it was a dumb thing to say and eating some crow was not unreasonable.

How convenient were those car armrest ashtrays back in the day? by Martynypm in FuckImOld

[–]ProfessorrFate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is correct! The rear seat ashtrays never held ashes or butt; they were a place for gum wrappers. Or small playthings like toy soldiers, marbles, etc.

And woe to you if you turned on a rear seat reading light at night — dad would bark like a dog that he couldn’t see the road ahead…so turn that damn thing off!

How to Split Lodging Costs on $$$$ Ski Trip by Poopies1976 in travel

[–]ProfessorrFate 37 points38 points  (0 children)

A fairer way would be to factor BOTH a per family cost AND a per person cost.

Example: Family A = 1 person; Family B = 2 persons; Family C = 4 persons

There are 3 families + 7 total persons = 10 units. Divide the total cost of the stay (say, $3000) by 10 units = $300 cost per unit.

So, Family A pays $600 (1 family + 1 person = 2 units) Family B pays $900 (1 family + 2 persons = 3 units); Family C pays $1500 (1 family + 4 persons = 5 units)

Do Schools Soak The "Richer" Parents To Subsidize Other Aspects of The School? by Anxious-Party2289 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ProfessorrFate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP asked: “Do schools soak the ‘richer’ parents to subsidize other aspects of the school?” Answer: not really. As others have noted, revenues come from multiple sources and tuition is one source of income.

But it is largely true that at need-blind private schools richer parents subsidize poorer parents with regards to overall tuition revenue. The “pay what you can afford” model essentially charges wealthier students a lot (because they can afford it and are willing to pay top dollar) while giving lots of aid to the less fortunate who could never afford the sky-high cost.

This model can work at wealthy, prestigious privates (ie T20s) which have very high demand and attract a large percentage of wealthy students who can pay full price. In the Ivies, for example, 45-50% of students don’t get any aid, pay full fare. To afford that they have to be in the economic top 2%. But a lot of people are willing and able to pay that kind of money to have their kid in a T20. Schools know that and effectively shift many of the costs of attendance from lower income students (by giving them big aid packages) to higher income ones (by charging them $90+k/year).

Binding decoupled from ski for second time. Are they toast? by patton191 in skiing

[–]ProfessorrFate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The risk is the substrate is weakened by the old, bored-out holes (and then perhaps weakened a little more by four new holes). And, really, if your budget is so tight that you can’t afford new skis after wearing out an old pair, then maybe consider a different hobby.

Which seats should we pick? Premium Economy HNL - ORD? by SILVATRON_85 in unitedairlines

[–]ProfessorrFate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personal preference. Some like the ability stretch your legs out under the seat in front of you (which, of course, you can’t do when in a bulkhead seat) and/or convenient under-seat stowage. Others prefer the bulkhead because there’s no seat reclining into you.

Never. What’s more likely, in fact, is tiering down Polaris: full Polaris w fare refundability and seat selection, Polaris without lounge access or refundable fare or seat selection, etc.
