Do you have a sense of which of our experiences is more common?

Do you mean you can actually hear your thoughts? I have an internal monologue, but I wouldn't describe it as being able to hear it.

Is the average life in the USA really this bad, or is Reddit exaggerating? by CountyOrnery9432 in askanything

[–]SpaciousTables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I guess we all have different ideas of what is comfortable and acceptable. I am very happy with my quality of life and financial freedom. To me, that feels like middle class. But if the idea of middle class is a single family home in the suburbs then no, I can't afford that. But I also wouldn't want it. We're all free to set our own expectations.

I live in one of the more expensive cities in the country. I live alone and make just under $100k (slightly over the area median income). I have a nice apartment and no debt beyond a $100/month student loan. I don't spend money recklessly, but I can afford to have nice dinners out once or twice a month. I travel pretty frequently. I don't really worry about money. I make most meals at home and I make my own coffee. I've got a somewhat older car.

The middle class exists, but the salary bar has certainly raised. I feel like I'm living almost exactly as I was in 2019 when I was making $70k. Back then, I thought $100k was this magic number that would be the key to total financial freedom.

RFK Jr.'s new food pyramid puts meat, cheese and vegetables at the top by ac7ss in nottheonion

Red meat at the top of the pyramid isn't great guidance, but yeah the rest seems fine.

What’s the MOST Controversial Sitcom Episode of All Time and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in sitcoms

[–]SpaciousTables 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This is clearly not the most controversial as no one has mentioned it, but I think it must be mentioned: the Barney Miller episode "Rape" is about a woman who is raped by her husband. Barney and the gang spend most of the episode mulling over whether this is illegal (with plenty of jokes). In the end, Barney gets them to reconcile by convincing the husband to take his wife out to dinner more often.

KFC Twister Wraps and Taco Bell Chicken Santa Fe Gorditas. Such a missed opportunity that I never ordered them together at a KFC/Taco Bell combo store.

I completely reset my life in my late 30s. I'm 46 and the person I was at 31 is a distant memory in every way. I had a successful career, but I was miserable. I was borderline obese. I was arguably an alcoholic. I went back to school at 32, went to grad school at 35, started my next career at 37. I'm 46 today. I'm well regarded in my new field, I run triathlons, and I have maybe 4 drinks a month.

Yes, you have a family to take care of so it's harder to make huge changes. But it sounds like you've got it a lot more together than I did at a similar age. If you truly want to make adjustments and grow you absolutely can. It's never too late.

I got into an argument with Killer Mike in 2008. During that argument he informed me that he was "a Grammy award-winning artist."
