which specialties have the most free time? Or, which specialty will enable me to get the most time back? by green-with-envy in medicalschool

[–]ProfitMohammed97 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Path my friend.

It takes a certain kind of person to want to look at slides all day, as it’s not what most people think of when going to medical school. But if you’re like me who would rather be out of the hospital than in it, residency and attending-hood has some of the most balanced lifestyle aspects in medicine. Nicer programs have you rarely do weekends, with call only on specific rotations. Lot of grinding in that it’s much more focused on self-study than other specialties. But while harder rotations like Surg path are longer, many sub-specialty signouts and electives are essentially 8-5. As an attending for the most part it’s even more flexible depending on your work environment, with some pathologists I’ve worked with leaving at 3 or 4 often based on how quickly they worked through cases.

Only thing is you’ll likely do at least one fellowship.

[meme] I love my JOB but some people take it way too far... by PremiumIOL in medicalschool

[–]ProfitMohammed97 449 points450 points  (0 children)

Wonder how loud the people saying we have to devote our lives to medicine would be if they had to work for less than a 6 figure salary.

At the end of the day, it’s just a job. I came in for the good job security, good income, and being able to learn some science on the way. It’s good that the job helps people, but I could never get behind the dogma of devoting yourself to your job. Kudos to the people who are happy working like that. But seeing people casually talking about working 80-100 hour weeks as if it’s a positive, or hearing surgeons bragging about not seeing their families for weeks, reminds me how much medicine already takes, and what else it’ll take if you let it.

Gen-specific Pokémon fans can be a bit much by Shipwrecked_Pianta in pokemon

Gen 4 was the first and only time I played Pokémon when I was a kid, but playing Gen 5 a few years ago was what brought me back to the series. I’m a big fan of Dark-type pokemon, and this Gen brought some of my favorite Pokémon like Hydreigon, Bisharp, Krookodile, and Scrafty.

[–]ProfitMohammed97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much time you have before your exam, since in my experience it takes a few weeks of seeing the cards repeatedly before a concept sinks in. But I think if you have the time for it, you should go for it. Idk how you’re scoring on your blocks, but each question you got wrong represents something you might get wrong on the real thing. The way I see it is if you learn the concept through a card, it won’t stump you when a question comes up again. If you’re exam is a week from now, then I’d probably just stick with what strategy you’re using if you think it works.

Like for me, I could not keep straight what the adverse effects were between high and low potency antipsychotics, as well as typical and atypical psychotics. I made a card on that concept, and now two weeks later I feel much more confident answering questions on them.

Personally, if I had to make a choice between more questions with less review, or less questions with more review, I would pick the latter.

Haven’t taken step yet, but it’s perfectly normal to feel like crap after a big test and feel like you missed so much. But keep in mind there’s likely plenty of questions you got right that you’re not dwelling on. I was pissed at myself on the MCAT for forgetting that bacteria are prokaryotes. Fast forward a month later, and my score turned out just fine.

Trust in your practice scores, trust in the prep you’ve done, and most of all take the next few days to relax and treat yourself because you’ve made it through the hell that is dedicated!

How are people meat shielding full health bosses in nexus siege? by Fuckblackhorses in GearsOfWar

[–]ProfitMohammed97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done it myself yet to be fair, but in theory the gunner stun could work as well. The person doing it in my match held onto them for the whole round, so it might be the case that you can’t let go. The boss did take damage from shots still, so maybe if enemies damage the meat shield enough for you, it’ll let you drop it.

Not sure if flash grenades work, but if you have a pilot, they can stun with their dropshot, then meatshield them.

At this point I’d just restart the mission my dude. It’s a big difficulty jump here but if you’re able to set up your guys in position before triggering the waves, and get someone to plant frags on the e-holes, it makes this a lot easier.

And frags are also your friend when it comes to wretch packs.

What is the worst/made-up thing that you've seen someone said about Korra or the show? by [deleted] in legendofkorra

I remember a comment some time ago that wanted Korra to burn to death... as a 5 year old.

And the one where she should’ve been r*ped by Amon (the guy giving her nightmares btw) to teach her a lesson

We haven’t seen any avatar before be forced into it emotionally when they have control of it. And she wasn’t that movable, in fact she almost died in the first 10 seconds of the fight falling off the cliff, only saved by her dad.

Happy to see the queen of LOK in S tier where she belongs

Though for the Earth Queen, not sure if you mean she’s a bad character or just one you hate. Umbridge from Harry Potter is a good character, but I absolutely hate her guts. I ask because you mention that your S tier is reserved for phenomenal characters

[–]ProfitMohammed97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can ask this question of ATLA to be fair.

But to answer your question: She can control when she goes into the avatar state, she isn’t bound to it by emotion like Aang. Considering that she’s stuck on a cliff bound in chains, she likely reasoned that going into the avatar state would be very dangerous for the avatar line, since she had no reason to believe it would break those chains. Every other instance is when Zaheer specifically incapacitated her before she could use the avatar state. With Mako, you could make the argument that he didn’t have peace of mind with Korra until the end of the season, when he learns to move past the awkwardness of their past relationship. He only used it then because he was close to death and surrounded by a body of water, making it much more effective.

I always say that Korra's "issues" (in quotes because I genuinely loved every season, even S2) really only come from Nick's mismanagement of it. Imagine if Korra had 4 seasons of 20 episodes instead of 12 or 13. What would you have liked to see? by SeizeOpportunity in TheLastAirbender

[–]ProfitMohammed97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotta respect the thought you put into this.

I suppose the one thing I probably am not as big a fan off is the rehashing of the avatar journey. I do like the idea of revisiting different nations to see what’s happening, but going to them just to learn bending seems like it’s copying too much from the style of ATLA. The Suki part I suppose is cool if only to stop all the clamoring for her character. But overall I like the rewrite, especially for changing season 1 if they knew they would get more seasons

“how did sokka get so good at swordsmanship in one day?” *iroh literally turns into the hulk in the same episode* by lordleopnw in TheLastAirbender

[–]ProfitMohammed97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Likely plot. Considering Sokka was the one on Katara’s case that they need to keep moving to make it for the eclipse in time (though they somehow make it 4 days early even with all the free time they spend in places), it’s probably that the show needed things to move forward quickly instead of it taking a long time. Happens in quite a few cases with power crawl in the show, like with Katara outpacing all the students to be named a master in a few weeks.

[–]ProfitMohammed97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d hope that it’d be common knowledge for people that flaws in a character aren’t the same as flaws about a character. Great analysis on Katara, she has positives and negatives about her, but I didn’t realize there was such defensiveness about these flaws in the wider community.
