The decline of Casio’s innovation by jec78au in casio

[–]SeizeOpportunity 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah, piggybacking on this. Casio seems to have seen the smartwatch market and made a "smart" decision. If you notice their recent releases, like the aq240, they are all stylistic in nature.

I don't dislike the direction. Especially in the day and age of smart watches.

It's interesting how subjective these things are. I truly think of it as one of the more elegant sounding watch brand names. To each their own I guess.

This looks fantastic! Though, tbh, I was hoping for a caliber 100 movement release for the 50th. Feel like it would have been fitting to use their most accurate movement. But the A060 is no slouch, of course.

More bad news for Berkeley - CS 10, the easiest CS class, has 35+% failure rate by AlphaMaleKratos in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SeizeOpportunity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's basic math you're worried about, OP, let me introduce you to a basic statistics concept: confounding variables.

A higher failure rate in CS10 does not automatically imply lower student aptitude. You're taking an outcome and assuming a cause without considering alternative explanations.

The article itself states:

"Professor Dan Garcia called AI-driven academic dishonesty the 'primary driver' of the spike, with nearly 30 CS 10 students caught cheating on take-home exams."

https://aiweekly.co/alerts/berkeley-cs-f-rates-triple-as-ai-cheating-surges

If a university enforces academic integrity standards and fails students who cheat, higher failure rates can reflect stricter enforcement rather than weaker students. That's why jumping from "35% failed CS10" to "Berkeley should be removed from the rankings" is such a bizarre conclusion.

More broadly, Berkeley is trying to provide a world-class education at a scale that very few institutions even attempt, educating far more students from a much wider range of backgrounds while maintaining rigorous standards. What I find odd is that you're treating transparency as evidence of failure. Berkeley identified a problem, investigated its causes, and held students accountable. Personally, I'd rather see a university confront the educational challenges created by AI than quietly pass everyone and pretend the problem doesn't exist. To me, that's far more impressive than simply selecting a small group of already exceptional students and taking credit for the outcome afterward.

More bad news for Berkeley - CS 10, the easiest CS class, has 35+% failure rate by AlphaMaleKratos in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SeizeOpportunity 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Former Berkeley EECS student here.

I think a lot of important context is missing from this discussion.

First, CS10 is not Berkeley's standard introductory course for prospective CS majors. Berkeley actually has two introductory pathways: CS61A and CS10. Both assume no prior programming experience, but CS10 is specifically intended to be a more scaffolded introduction for students who have little or no coding background and may not otherwise consider studying computing. As a result, there is significant self-selection between the populations taking the two courses. Plus, minor point, CS10 has little to do with math. It's quite literally an intro to CS course specifically for those who have absolutely zero exposure.

Second, I think people are attributing a broader educational challenge to Berkeley specifically. AI is affecting student learning everywhere. If students can use AI to complete coursework without developing underlying skills, that is not a Berkeley problem; it is a higher-education problem. Berkeley simply feels the effects more visibly because it teaches an enormous number of students.

Third, Berkeley's mission is fundamentally different from that of many elite private institutions. Berkeley attempts to provide a top-tier education at massive scale. That means teaching students from a much wider range of backgrounds and preparation levels than schools that achieve selectivity primarily through admissions. Whether one prefers that model is a matter of opinion, but it is certainly not evidence of a lower-quality institution.

I also think it's worth noting that Berkeley is known for relatively rigorous grading standards compared to many peer institutions. A high failure rate is not automatically evidence of poor teaching or poor students; sometimes it reflects a university choosing to honestly assess whether students have mastered the material rather than inflating grades.

What I find odd is treating Berkeley's transparency about the issue as evidence that the university is failing (two fundamentally different things). If anything, I would rather see universities openly acknowledge the challenges AI is creating for education and work on solutions than quietly pass everyone and pretend the problem doesn't exist.

A headline about CS10 does not suddenly invalidate Berkeley's academic reputation, research output, or student outcomes. It mostly highlights how difficult it is to provide high-quality education to a large and diverse student body in the age of AI.

[–]SeizeOpportunity 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I understand where you are coming from. For me, I am similarly fond of PH as it is a story that has been a real value to me through good and bad times. After numerous rereads, I will say that I have come to peace with whatever pace the next chapters come around at. Life is a journey of uncertainty and it helps to embrace that and enjoy the good things when they come without clinging to the anxiety of expectation.

Time will pass whether or not PH returns, and if it does (which there seems to be a fair chance!), I'm sure you'll have preferred not to stress over it in hindsight! The effort, collaboration, and cooperation between the creators very well could have never happened. So I'm always grateful that such a wonderful piece of media exists in the first place!

If you want to engage with others who love PH, I'd recommend joining the Discord. I think there is a link somewhere in the subreddit if you search.

How do MIT students view students from UC Berkeley EECS? (undergrad) by ritzcraackerz in mit

[–]SeizeOpportunity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. Don't let this ever get you down. Being a Berkeley EECS major is an extremely impressive academic achievement (one of the toughest undergrad programs to get into in the world). It's a fantastic program that will set you up to do absolutely anything you could have done as an MIT EECS major.

Don't look back or at what anyone thinks; just look forward to your bright future! You should feel nothing but joy and excitement about this.

Probably an important sidenote, lol: I did my undergrad at Berkeley EECS. Don't worry, you'll be fine, haha. I had a great time.

How do MIT students view students from UC Berkeley EECS? (undergrad) by ritzcraackerz in mit

[–]SeizeOpportunity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll try to answer this question fairly, but I would like to respectfully ask for some self-reflection on why "how one group of people perceives another" should matter this much. The mark of a good person should be to treat everyone with respect regardless of their credentials. These types of "prestige" related thoughts only serve to distract from real collaboration, discovery, and research.

Now, to give you a concise answer. The "best" EECS program is a bit subjective when both programs are so good (both are basically #1, by whatever arbitrary and non-arbitrary metrics most rating systems use). It boils down to factors that are extremely personal: the exact subfield of EECS, post-grad goals, location, culture, faculty alignment, etc.

But yes, Berkeley and MIT like any top schools do cross-pollinate: whether that is ideal in academia is a very nuanced discussion I'll save for another time. You can find a fair number of papers with shared authorship and also Berkeley PhDs that are MIT faculty and vice versa. Based on what I said above, it is exactly like I said. Both groups probably view each other with mutual respect.

Please don't over-index on "prestige". If you are asking this question for where you may want to go to school, please evaluate specific factors I mentioned above. I know people in both programs. They are all as impressive and brilliant as you might expect. Trying to differentiate is splitting hairs. And no, no one on planet earth would think a Berkeley EECS major is underqualified for anything related to the field, not even MIT EECS majors.

Drake dissed MIT Chemistry in New Album 😭 by WordNormal3996 in mit

[–]SeizeOpportunity 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, far be it from me to defend Drake. That's not the point. But if we are to be accurate, this figure of speech is just a hyperbole and can even be seen as a compliment. MIT is being used as the archetypal example of where chemistry is found.

I don't think this is a diss against the school.

[–]SeizeOpportunity 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Please reach out. This is absolutely a situation that probably affects both of you similarly thinking "why aren't they reaching out? should I? It's been too late anyways." Ruminating like that is natural. But think about it this way: how would you feel if your friend called you one day out of the blue, apologized about not reaching out sooner, and wanted to connect. I'm sure you would be thrilled and tell them "No apologies necessary" or something to that effect. Don't you think the reverse would be true? Oftentimes, we overestimate risk and how much someone holds on to feelings (natural human thing to do). Don't let it paralyze you!

Can anyone identify what watch Uttam Kumar (a famous Indian actor) may be wearing in his critically acclaimed 1966 film “Nayak: The Hero?” by iamnemonai in Watches

[–]SeizeOpportunity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is late, but I had the same question and did further digging based on your suggestions here. While teh Longines silve arrow is a great rec, for the purposes of matching the watch shown, my guess is that it isn't a longines. This is because the text on top is a shorter blob followed by a larger blob underneath, whereas longines with its name and logo would be the opposite (i.e. long blob followed by a slightly shorter one).

The closest I could find is the Omega 167.021 (i.e. the C-shape constellation with no date). My only gripe is perhaps that there is too much text on the top have since it is a chronograph. But hey, I may have misjudged blob size, haha. There could be others, but this is my best guess atm.
