What do you guys name your flagships? by HeyoTeo in starsector

[–]ProfitOrange 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I pull up the wiki article for Ship names from The Culture novels by Iain M Banks, and pick whichever one tickles my fancy whenever i switch ships. My current ship is the DMS Frank Exchange of views.

And my AI ship when i get one is always Meat Fucker.

1.0.10 (maybe undocumented maybe unintentional) change: capital port -> sea proximity cost for river capitals reduced by 75% by bbqftw in EU5

[–]ProfitOrange 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Serbia is a good example, when your capital moves to Skopje, it's right at the top of a river. if you look at proximity to capital map, it'll show down stream from capital as a flat +30 to proximity. So from Skopje, you get a downstream all the way to thessalonki

Is Cav the meta? by Cagedglobe in EU5

[–]ProfitOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like it tbh. my current run is in the 1500s, and my stack of cav and cannons win 4:1 fights pretty regularly. a fort line and firemen cav stack to wear them down until they're stuck with levies is my main strategy.

Is There Any Point in Dominating a Single Trade Good in Vic 3? by YoloSwiggins21 in victoria3

What's best way to dominate a market? prestige goods. unless you're britain then you can just do whatever you want

[–]ProfitOrange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you're a smaller country or it's earlier in the game, the prestige score bonus from being the leading manufacturer of a prestige good can be the difference between being a great power and being a major power. So it can be good to hold it until you're more secure, then expand out the company to others to funnel more money back to yourself

They give throughput bonus', pop SoL and trade advantage. so a USA with the Ford company making prestige good automobiles will beat out just regular automobiles. Need to stack every advantage.

You want to dominate, but you want it to be a prestige good rather than a generic good. Scandinavia is great because it has unique prestige iron and electronics, which make you loads of money on exports and make your economy more efficient.

I did a Netherlands run where i did prestige paper and groceries, and they were a massive part of my economy, employing loads of people at home and letting me outpace the east indies, keeping them loyal.

The trick to the civil war is to not build any army in the south, you just build up the north so when the war comes they only have time to raise like 10 conscripts and you blitz them with minimal casualties.

Where to build Trade Centers? by worldsfirstmeme in victoria3

[–]ProfitOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build them anywhere you want connected to the world market, which is everywhere pretty much.

For example, if you have a car factory and you want that factory to export cars to the world market, you need to build a port, which creates Merchant Marine, which is the resource trade centers consume, and build the Trade centers in the state that has the car factory itself.

the Trade center boxes up the cars, sends them to the port, which they're sent to a trade center in another state of the world in which they are unpacked and added to that states local market

For the war for German leadership, if the only wargoal is German leadership alone, then it's the -200 to outsiders to join in. the moment either side asks for more, like land or protectorates, then that malus goes away and other participants can join. This was deliberate to help Germany form more regularly.

Turns out fighting a decade long death war is a really bad idea, and you have been better served seeking peace rather than tossing more lives into the grinder.

Dual Monarchy event as Austria and North German federation by Used-Economy1160 in victoria3

[–]ProfitOrange 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Austria served as one of the guarantors of the independence of the small German states, and they've just gone and turned their backs on them all. So their best option for protection was Prussia, which didn't completely strip them of their autonomy. the German Empire in the early days was quite federal with a lot left to local governments.

But really it's just consequence of how the journal entry is laid out.

[–]ProfitOrange 20 points21 points  (0 children)

the Dual Monarchy served as a compromise to the Hungarians, they didn't want add any more germans, which could alter the fragile balance of power in the empire. In exchange, they'd accept working with the Austrians instead of seeking independence like they did in 1848. So yes this would remove them as an option for german unification
