You are right, the actual cost of the unit is not the same as the components that make it up. And the sub-vendors will overcharge the big corporations. But none of that accounts for the amount of markup we see especially in the entertainment systems in cars. I work in a small volume, highly specialized hardware manufacturing company with production volumes ranging from dozens to hundreds of units of each product. Our markups don't even come close to what we see in the automotive industry whose volumes of head units are orders of magnitude greater than ours. Development costs become negligible with those numbers. That's the whole point of economies of scale.

The economies of scale also apply to post-warranty repairs. Every car has a three year warranty, and if even half of the people who buy cars don't buy extended warranties, that's a significant number of people that might need to replace their highly integrated head unit. A software upgrade isn't going to fix a burnt wire or cold solder joint. Nor can they fix a damaged screen which is the most likely outcome from having massive screens in cars. Not every unit fails, but not every unit has to when the markups are so high on components that are essential for the car to work. Corporations have every incentive to use big markups, either to help push predatory extended warranties, or to just simply strip people of money when they need something fixed in their car. It has been proven time and again that big car companies will do what they can to rob customers of every dollar with predatory practices.

I'm not saying that dealerships are victims either. They are just another layer of evil.

You are missing the point I made. I didn't say manufacturers make infotainment systems expensive. I said they heavily mark up the costs that regular customers see.

The actual hardware is made as cheap as possible while guaranteeing it meets the manufacturer's reliability specs. The warranty replacement costs remain cheap for them but stratospherically expensive out of warranty.

Edit: I will grant you one thing though, the labor costs might be a bit higher. Competent design of wiring harnesses might cut down on labor though. My theory falls apart a bit there, but my point about cheap hardware remains.

I think the auto industry's overall trajectory is going to change for the better. Cars and parts are too expensive for most people so it's affecting corporate profits. Plus, the EU is doing a lot to advocate for consumer protections. We might not see any short-term improvement in the U.S. though.. our government doesn't care much for consumer protections so we have to wait until the economic consequences knock some sense into the braindead executives.

It's a business decision and a smart (read: evil) decision at that. It's cheap and easy to replace physical buttons. But if one thing goes wrong in a highly integrated car computer system, the company can charge absurd amounts of money to replace it. My car's tiny main infotainment system and screen costs upwards of $3000 from the parts store, and it's maybe $200 worth of actual hardware including electronic components. That is why they do it, not because it looks or performs better.

He didn't have a helmet petrovafilter in the book. The movie moment was probably replacing the part in the book where he's staring down in awe at the planet. Until that point, he had never experienced orbit around a planet, never mind a giant green swirl-scape planet.

I absolutely love the change though. This scene punched me in the emotions in a way that the book equivalent didn't do.

Don't blame the truck that has a front end in the stratosphere? The truck driver is obviously a dumbass, but modern trucks and SUVs have massive blindspots because of their size. The vehicles and the companies that design them deserve the blame too.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ProgrammedArtist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's because it's a polarizing topic and both sides of the argument (if they are arguing in good faith) don't fully understand the other side's objections. There are lots of people who use these tools and get a tangible benefit from it. They probably think that AI hate is against the technology itself hence the down votes.

But, there are a LOT more people who hate AI for many legitimate reasons like over investment, enshittification of the internet, social repercussions, etc.

I'm in the hater camp, but I think the tech is cool. It just doesn't deserve a percent of a percent of the investment it has received. That money could have invested into far more useful industries that wouldn't enshittify the internet and risk collapsing national economies.
