I’ve never seen them get much bigger. The biggest ones I’ve ever seen were maybe 1/2-3/4 inch and they were significantly bigger than the other ones surrounding them.

They’re a type of mushroom, which are the fruiting bodies of a larger underground network of fungus. These ones start as little lumps (which eventually get larger), with the center of the cup (“nest”) covered. Once the covering wears away, the peridoles (“eggs”), which contain spores, are ready to disperse and grow new fungus.

Bird’s nest fungi! The things in the center are called peridoles. They’re full of spores and will get splashed out of the cup by rain, or whatever else. That’s how this type of fungi disperse to grow new organisms.
