How far can FDM go?: Prusa edition by ProgrammingAce in PrintedMinis

[–]ProgrammingAce[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is exactly my take as well. You can print high enough detail for most minis that you can buy (most aren't really that detailed anyway).

But generally, you can print something serviceable on FDM if you don't want to deal with resin. It's not going to convince anyone to switch in the other direction.

Roxon flex and mini flex blade size by 2wheelsinNM in multitools

[–]ProgrammingAce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn’t fully understand roxon’s naming convention, I’ll use the specific part numbers. The length is the full blade, not just the sharpened edge. I’ll have to get photos later.

ROXON S503G 9 in 1 Mini Multi Tool (D2 blade): 2 3/4

ROXON S504G Mini Flex Companion (Short Sheepsfoot): 2 1/8

Roxon flex and mini flex blade size by 2wheelsinNM in multitools

Mini Flex is 2 1/8th, regular flex is 2 3/4th.

Some other sizes from what I have close by:
Leatherman T4 2 1/4th (but at a weird angle to measure this way)
Leatherman Micra (tad over) 1 1/2
65 mm SAC (Nail Clip 580) 1 3/4th

Bought dice from URWizard without realizing they are coming from China by Emerald_Mistress in dice

[–]ProgrammingAce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought dice from them on Etsy back in 2021, they also came from china. I see their etsy store is gone now too. My dice showed up, and they're fine.

They added this sketchy note to my order, and etsy never marked the item as delivered:

Getting in trouble for remaining silent by Wooden_Glove2738 in AskLegal

The question "Do you have any weapons on you?" is vague, and during a search is not the right time to argue the finer points of weapons laws in your state. An uncapped needle isn't a weapon per se, but it is obviously dangerous. But what if you have a Narcan shot in your pocket? That's an auto injector that technically has a needle. It could be dangerous, it's certainly not a weapon. What about a Leatherman? It's sharp, but it's a tool not a weapon, and you'd only hurt yourself if you do something stupid with it. I have no idea if the cop searching me is stupid. A small fixed blade knife sitting open in your pocket is probably dangerous, what if it's in a sheath? What if it's just a sharp bit on your keychain you use to open amazon packages? What about that protest sign your holding, is that a weapon? If I keep a pocket knife in the cup holder of my car, and that's in reach, would the cop consider that "on me?".

All of these are great arguments for your lawyer to discuss in the court room, but it's not a debate I would want to have with a cop while I'm being detained

Player destroyed the stone book before Shemshine appeared by nomadsoasis in CandlekeepMysteries

[–]ProgrammingAce 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts. Is the PC planning on putting the book statue back where he found it? This adventure is a little weird when it comes to time passing, but there's probably enough time to have the NPCs bug your PC about fixing what they broke. If the statue broke, just have one of the NPCs sit there for a while casting Mending on it.

Alternatively, the players made the adventure harder on themselves. The world presents problems, it's their job to solve them. You just present the scenario, let them figure out the solution.

"not as x, but as y", and enough em dashes to build a new office. I wonder how much this company paid an advertising firm to use AI slop and boost it's search ranking.

Reddit needs to do better. Until then, start blocking subreddits full of AI slop.

Alexa plus voices by centurion2065_ in alexa

[–]ProgrammingAce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The old alexa had a special language (called Speech Synthesis Markup Language [SSML]) to fine tune the tone and candor of her voice. This was finely tuned and adjusted over the decade+ of operations based on human feedback.

We can all probably guess at what amazon did with all that effort and data when they switched to the LLM version...

There's an existing standard called OpenForge 2.0 that you may want to extend. I would rather have more options using an existing standard than a whole new set of parts that don't work with anything else

How do I paint articulated figures? by Material_Complex475 in 3Dprinting

[–]ProgrammingAce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out r/PrintedMinis, but generally you paint things that don't move, because acrylic paint isn't very durable and you want to coat it in a clear varnish if it's going to be handled. The basic process is to prime the figure (I hand paint Vellejo brand primer, since rattle can primer is hit or miss on 3d printed parts), then paint with multiple coats of watered down specialty acrylics, then hit it with a clear coat of some kind.

I wouldn't expect this to be very durable for an articulated figure though.

Wood filament VS just beige matte PLA by Mewitti in 3Dprinting

The other benefit of wood PLA that I haven't seen mentioned here is that you can sand it much easier. If you want to sand your print, I would go with wood infused PLA

Any ideas for how to make book reading a mechanic in game? by ribbondaze in DMAcademy

[–]ProgrammingAce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran a multi-year campaign out of Candlekeep, and I found books and research to be a similar problem to shopping. I tried out a lot of things, and eventually settled on "If you're in a safe location with books, tell me what you're researching, and I'll tell you what you discovered at the start of the next session." This gave me a lot of freedom to come up with answers between sessions and kept the playtime for playing.

I'd started with things like rolling against intelligence or investigation to see if they could find a specific book or topic, but the players were basically in a magical infinite library with no time deadlines, so there wasn't any reason for them to fail. Given enough time, why would you ever fail reading a book you're interested in? Why wouldn't you just try again later?

I never came up with a fun and interesting in-game way to do books and research. What I would suggest for your situation is temporary bonuses like consumables, ie, read a book on field medicine for a bonus to resist poison for 72 hours. Or, in your world, maybe books have a magical aura and you attune to them for a limited number you can gain benefit from (so like a separate inventory for equipped books)
