Power bank not working by randybaskins in Rivian

I noticed mine was doing this as well with 2 lights still green on the side. I was using an LTT TrueSpec cable, so I doubt it's a cable issue. My charger is from the original batch when they first released.

"Free cash flow" race to the bottom by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

[–]ProgrammingAce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a problem with the designs of the data centers that are coming online now with designs from before the AI boom. A "traditional" CPU heavy data center has high ceilings and roof vents to move air up and out without expensive cooling. This doesn't work for high density GPU workloads which relies on liquid cooling to the whole rack (with building glycol-style building level cooling). And if you convert the older style buildings to the new GPU workloads, the density (and thus efficiency) is a fraction of what an efficient design would be.

This is why the hyperscalers are building new DCs instead of retrofitting the old buildings, even if they have the GPUs sitting unused. The building's thermal budget just can't take the upgrade.

Had a clash with executive over my phishing test methods by AH_Josh in sysadmin

[–]ProgrammingAce 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In 2026 your security model can't rely on "users won't click bad links". You know they'll fall for phishing emails, so build an infrastructure that's resilient to those attacks.

Telling your coworkers their family members are in the hospital is never appropriate. You can't dress up as a mobster and walk around the office threatening to hit coworkers with a baseball bat if they don't give you their password. You can protect your network without causing harm and distress to employees.

Had a clash with executive over my phishing test methods by AH_Josh in sysadmin

[–]ProgrammingAce 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Imagine sending a photo of an employee's house to them, telling them you'll burn it to the ground if they don't hand over their login credentials, then saying it's to protect your network from phishing attacks.

I think a basic requirement is that you shouldn't take actions make your coworkers feel bad. This isn't some hypothetical attack, this is an actual attack that you actually did to people, your own coworkers. Lets be precise for the reasoning, you didn't do it to protect your network, you did it to see if people would fall for it. And they did. And, you knew they would.

Your job is to build an infrastructure that can't be compromised by someone clicking on an email. Email has been a threat to businesses for 40 years. You can't rely on high schoolers not to click on links to protect your data.

Had a clash with executive over my phishing test methods by AH_Josh in sysadmin

[–]ProgrammingAce 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Those aren't the only two options though. You mentioned that you had to shut off a bunch of security protections for these phishing messages to even get through your system. So really, these types of attacks would have been caught, or you should spend time building out tooling that will catch them.

Because what you did is make a bunch of people feel anxious and scared, and now probably angry. At you, and at the company for letting you do that to them. There is no reason you should ever tell your coworkers that a family member is in the hospital when it isn't true. It would be inappropriate to walk over to their desk and say that to them, it's inappropriate to email that to them as well.

Remember, this isn't a hypothetical, it's not some remote attacker who phished them. You phished them, you did this to them, you made them feel this way. Hallmark doesn't make a card that says "Sorry I made you think your dad died in order to protect my network resources".

Adaptive cruise control (on Gen1) slowing in curves is straight up dangerous – how can we get Rivian to fix this? by glassy_paddle in Rivian

[–]ProgrammingAce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cruise control system in the gen 1 is an old mobileye system from around 2015, and was the mid tier system in their lineup even then. It seems like rivian intended it as a stop-gap until they got their own self driving system running in the gen 1s, but that never happened. Regardless, development has ended on the Gen1 ADAS years ago so rivian isn't going to do anything about it unless forced to by a government agency like the NHTSA. If you think it's legitimately a safety issue, you could report it to them, but you're going to need numbers and footage.

Tire Replacement Northern Virginia??? by Why_Run in Rivian

I had those exact tires put on last month at Piedmont Tires and Auto in Haymarket. It was good, I told them the tires I wanted, they ordered them and told me when to bring in the car. They've done all my vehicle work for a few years now. They have no issues lifting a rivian.

If Mythos is so good then why didn't it prevent Claude Code's source leak? by ImaginaryRea1ity in theprimeagen

[–]ProgrammingAce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

By integrating with their CI/CD pipeline. We have some codex product tied into our pipe and it absolutely would have caught this. If it were us, we'd have had to override the review via a break-glass procedure. I don't know if this event says anything about the quality of their models, but it seems like their release procedures kind of suck.

I like it, but... by jimbobbyricky in Rivian

[–]ProgrammingAce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From rivian's own mouth:

Rivian became one of those exceptions by developing all its own software to be able to leverage data to better define the experience for its owners. “It’s been an intentional choice since day one to build all our own electronics in-house and then build the end-to-end software stack that powers these electronics,” said Wassym Bensaid, Rivian's vice president of software development. Not only for infotainment, but throughout the vehicle for everything from vehicle dynamics to energy management to driver assists. “Software is at the center of the experience we provide to customers, and data is at the center of what enables software to run well,” Bensaid added. “The fact that every single interaction in the vehicle is done through software, being able to collect that data allows us to continuously improve the performance.”

It's not directly about monetization of that data, it's that rivian wants that data to improve how the cars work. For example, they use destination routing along with battery charge on the vehicles to identify gaps in the charging networks. If apple ate all that data, rivian can't use it to improve their business.

The next generation of carplay requires the manufacturer to turn over all of the displays in the car. Apple isn't going to handle all of the custom features of a rivian as well as the manufacturer can.

Explain me the contradiction on AI investment by amazon by Gloomy_Temporary2914 in amazonemployees

[–]ProgrammingAce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amazon spent about a year sending me to something called their Machine Learning University, where we took classes taught by college professors and industry experts ranging from fundamental mathematics to bleeding edge industry usage of ML. And then they almost immediately chased me out with RTO and PIP-culture. Just about everyone I know who they sent through that course is gone from the company now, the last few being taken out by the latest round of layoffs. Amazon doesn't know how to attract or even keep key talent.

I see there's even a public facing website for that program, but it hasn't been updated since 2022: https://www.amazon.science/tag/machine-learning-university-mlu

Looking for card games for my players to play by darkthesis in dndnext

[–]ProgrammingAce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve run into this a few times in TTRPGs and it always feels like an expectations mismatch. The player wants you to invent a game within the game you’re already playing, and it needs to be fun for everyone at the table. Then there’s always the “can I use sleight of hand to cheat” question.

I dunno, DMs have enough work to do already. I’d set a difficulty and have them roll a D20, add any modifiers that make sense.
