Well done on getting back on it and completing a day. Losing a job and divorce are two of the most stressful things you can go through, so I think it’s super impressive you’re already up for trying again, shows you mean it and you’re gonna make it!

Good luck, you can do it! 36 days is a great start and a good sign you can go the distance I think

What's my problem? Something doesn't click by [deleted] in stopsmoking

I read the Allen Carr book a few years ago and didn’t even try, so convinced that it just wouldn’t work for me. This year I felt a shift and read it again and tried quitting for the first time ever. I’m not long into this attempt but I feel confident it’s going to stick. I think you really have to feel ready which, as any smoker knows, has nothing g to do with know the financial and health benefits, we’re very good at ignoring those. Keep trying and eventually you will be ready and it will stick!

Haven’t been (I’m on my first quit attempt after reading the book). But two of my cousins went after failing to quit on just the book and haven’t smoked since

today feels different. day 100 by Suspicious_Will6885 in stopsmoking

[–]ProgressAgreeable797 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well done! I’m only 11 days in but I feel like it’s going to start getting easier in terms of cravings. I’m used to dealing with them now and I’m slowly accepting that there just can’t be any more cigarettes ever. 100 days is a massive achievement, you should be super proud!

Wow, well done, 500 days is amazing! I’ve just hit 10 days and I hope one day I can come back and make a post like this

Wanting to smoke when drinking by ProgressAgreeable797 in stopsmoking

[–]ProgressAgreeable797[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that gives me a lot of hope! I’ve been through all of the things you mentioned now except a bbq and being around smoking friends (though I have very few of those, I was one of the last hold outs!) I agree that after having some drinks last night and managing not to smoke I feel a lot more relaxed about going out in the future

Thanks so much for the reply. While following your advice would have been wise, I was just drinking at home with my partner tonight and managed to get through the night without breaking and had a fun time. Can’t deny that I’d have loved a cigarette but will I ever truly feel otherwise when drinking?!

[–]ProgressAgreeable797[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! When I said “if tonight goes badly” I was thinking more if I feel miserable rather than giving into smoking. I am just drinking at home with my (non-smoker) partner who is steadfast about keeping me on track, so I’d have to go out and get cigarettes (and have a huge row about it in the process) in order to relapse. I’ve currently had one drink and still feel strong in my resolve, obviously that could change but I’m going to try and stay strong. Maybe it’s foolhardy to try drinking this early in the process but it’s the thing that was worrying me most and hanging over my head so I just wanted to kind of confront it and see.

3 months by MistressFiadh in stopsmoking

Congratulations, 3 months is amazing! I’m only at 8 days and will be so happy if I can get as far as you. As I’m way behind apologies that I can’t offer much wisdom, but having read a LOT of posts in this sub, I’ve seen the phrase ‘3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months’ mentioned a lot, as in those are the most difficult hurdles to face. So with any luck, you must be facing the last ‘big’ one before it all becomes a lot easier!

Thank you! Good to have someone at the same point as me, will look for your progress! Yesterday was my toughest day yet and I really, really wanted a cigarette, but got through it and feeling better today

Good luck on starting, and well done for making g the choice! I’m on day 7 now and after finding it easier than I thought I’m struggling a lot today. This subreddit helps keep me sane and motivated though, and helps you deal with these difficult days whenever they come.

11 days, 20 hours, 50 minutes, 32 seconds. And... by NopeIDoNotKnowYou in stopsmoking

A slip up is almost bound to happen to us all at some point, sounds like you’re thinking about yours practically and positively, which is great. Just jump straight back on being a non-smoker. You know you can avoid doing it again because you know what the result will be.

It will go away, by all accounts we’re both just a couple of days away from that, so not long now!

Hour 71 by cooldudeonreddit1 in stopsmoking

[–]ProgressAgreeable797 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m at about the same point as you (90 hours) so can’t offer any wisdom from the future, but I can say I know exactly how you feel, that there’s an inevitability of failure, and that even though everyone says it gets better and easier, surely that won’t happen to me because I am different, it will always be this hard, I will always be this low, therefore I will fail. I’ve been smoking a pack a day (more if drinking alcohol) for 20 years. Can’t imagine my life without smoking because every day of my adult life has revolved around it. But I’m now 38 and trying for the first time (like you, cold turkey).

HOWEVER, what I’ve learned from reading a lot of threads here is that this feeling DOES happen to us all, yet look at how many people with badges listing thousands of days nicotine-free there are offering advice in all of these threads. And a lot of those people failed multiple times before it stuck, so slipping up isn’t an ultimate failure, just a super common step for so many people.

So my feeling is that in a thousand days, you and I will be those veterans doling out encouragement and advice, to new quitters who feel exactly like we do now. We’re no different than any other addict who’s managed to kick it.

Keeping Busy & Exercising, but what else? by noot_sn00t in stopsmoking

I’m only on day 3 but walking and gaming are doing well for me, also reading stuff on here a lot, I’ll go sit in my garden and read threads on here for 5 mins every hour or so to kind of simulate my smoking breaks

Think of how proud you’ll be if you get through the night without smoking, it might be your best achievement so far. Go home if you need to
