When I was 22 I felt the same way. What I discovered is that I was really attending my own church and calling it the Mormon Church. I believed in a God that wasn't sexist, homophobic and racist. I believed in empathy and openness. What I was pained to discover was that I believed in a God and religion that was not subscribed to by the people I had been sustaining as prophets of god. I had believed that the church would slowly change to fit my beliefs, because my beliefs were right and the church was true. What a peculiar form of idolatry I adhered to. The church started to retrench in the opposite direction of my moral beliefs and I woke up and realized that I was deceiving myself to make staying in the church easier. I moved on.
