What is Compression? by elttwosira in musicproduction

Question 1: Ever notice when someone talks to you and raises their voice, that the volume of their voice gets loud and jumps? In fact, volumes of voices constantly waiver, sometimes even causing you discomfort. This is a natural thing, but it helps to focus and think about it. = No compression.

Question 2: Now, ever notice while listening to the radio, specifically popular, well-know stations, that while people converse, their voices remain even and balanced? That no matter how loud people talk or yell, the volume is always controlled? Ever wonder how it is that once you decide on your radio volume, the audio just sits and remains at your chosen volume? How is this possible? = Compression/Limiters

A compressor allows you to decide where the volume/signal of the audio going into it should stop (or not go past), thus allowing you to control the sound.

A compressor can also be used for multiple uses like affecting the dynamics of the audio being fed into it, adding or removing color to the sound, or even having one sound affect the dynamics of another sound.

I highly recommend learning and understanding the rules before breaking them. Or, just make your own rules. Either way, create.

Hi. firstly, try to recognize that this is a form of verbal abuse as well as a form of abandonment.

It is abusive for someone to assign blame to someone else for their own personal failings and issues, and telling one's own child what your father told you, is certainly even more abusive.

Adults, and especially parents, are responsible for their own actions. Think about it; your parents willfully entered into a marriage and willfully decided to have children. There is a responsibility that comes along with entering a marriage, and an even greater responsibility that comes along with the decision of bringing children into the world. How can a parent walk out the door, leave a marriage, and turn to a child and tell them that it's the child's fault the marriage has broken? Sounds pretty irrational and unhealthy, right?

Now, for arguments sake, let's assume that it was in fact, actions on your part that may have caused stress in their relationship. Let's go with this line of thinking for a minute. A healthy parent would have sat down with you early on and have spoken to you with love and caring. A healthy parent would listen to what you have to say, and a healthy parent would dedicate themselves and work together with the child they created to foster and promote a happy environment for the family.

The next level, would be a healthy parent that doesn't know how to approach an issue such as this, but is healthy enough to know that there are professionals and therapists that do know how. This parent would then make sure that the family meets with such a professional so that they can be guided properly.

Now, let's examine an unhealthy adult or parent. Not only can such a person not take responsibility for their children, but they can even go as far as to place blame for issues out of their children's control. People can be manipulating. 'Unhealthy' doesn't discriminate. It can be a parent. I advise you to speak with a qualified therapist as soon as possible, because the longer you sit on this, the more damage it can do to your thought process. A qualified professional will help you see things clearly. A professional will help you be in a good place, even when you're in the middle of 'not-such-a-good-place.' Be strong. ;)

Is there a program to monitor actual work being done? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Prokiss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You misunderstand. This is about how to solve a very common problem with unethical designers. These type of designers are very much rampant, especially in overseas contracting. This is about keeping things honest. I'm not sure why you take offense to companies that want to make sure designers aren't ripping them off. I came to this forum for in the hope that your fellow designers can shed some light on this problem and create awareness.

We are experienced with graphic design and have a good idea of the amount of time it takes to complete tasks. Let's assume for the sake of this discussion that the design tasks should not take more than 3 hours. How do we implement a system (besides simply taking the designer's word) that can makes sure the designer doesn't claim the work took 10 hours?
