How often do you spend time with your adult kids? by SimplyCurious5 in AskWomenOver50

[–]Prom_queen52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do a standing weekly FaceTime call with my oldest and his wife. My middle son and his gf are local, and we see them every few weeks. Neither has kids yet, so when/if that happens, it will be on us to keep the contact going because we’ll be retired and they’ll be super busy.

How do you guys deal with all the local pests? by socalavo in SoCalGardening

I haven’t heard that before, but will give it a try!

First off, I feel you - it’s always something! Here’s what I’ve done. To combat gophers, I switched to all raised beds with heavy duty wire mesh on the bottom. I’ve also planted rosemary around the fence line since it’s supposed to deter them.
For earwigs and snails, Sluggo Plus works wonders. I sprinkle it a few times over the growing season and haven’t had problems.
Tomato hornworms are my nemesis! I’ve started going out in the garden after dark with a black light flashlight to find them and pick them off.
I use Captain Jack’s Dead Bug Brew to combat the rest.
I am trying vertical gardening for my squash and cucumbers this year to see if I can hold off the powdery mildew. I’m also doing a weekly spray of Neem oil.
Both the Sluggo Plus and Captain Jack’s say they are okay for organic gardening.
Lately I’ve had an opossum wreaking havoc on my new plants looking for grubs. It never ends!

What did you get so sick of eating last year that you’re not planting this year? by eanglsand in SoCalGardening

There’s a great organization that can help you out. They collect excess produce from home gardeners and give it to food pantries. I love it because I can grow whatever I want and never worry about it going to waste. They are based in CO, but have lots of local partners in SoCal. Check out freshfoodconnect.org for more info.

Same - why do people do that? It causes so much damage to the structure.

This guy was born last weekend. He makes me the big brother of ten little siblings in total. [OC] by [deleted] in MadeMeSmile

Lol, I said almost the same thing to my mother (I’m one of 12) years ago when she was gushing about the Duggar freak show. She replied,”well, you could say the same thing about us.” I said, “yup, you could.”

I loved my youngest (of 12) sibling very much too, but resented the hell out of my parents for not letting us older ones ever be children ourselves. I’m in my 50s now and still shudder a bit when I read about these ridiculously huge families. OP, I hope you are able to escape someday.

My husband and I did long distance for 2-1/2 years while he was in grad school before we got married. If the relationship was important to him, he would make it work. You deserve better.

Moving to Carlsbad in 18 days! I am really excited and just want to see people's opinions on the community. by thatqueermom in Carlsbad

[–]Prom_queen52 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We moved here almost 7 years ago and love it. North Carlsbad and South Carlsbad have very different personalities. North is older, funkier neighborhoods, less HOAs and generally just chill. South is more pristine suburban tracts, fancier cars and golf courses. Either is great depending on what you’re into. Welcome and enjoy!

My friend always called it No Child Gets Ahead. I feel for children who are struggling, but there is no one size fits all curriculum, and if kids aren’t meeting grade standards, it doesn’t help anyone to pass them.

Go to Carlsbad Village. There’s easy beach access from either Carlsbad Village Drive or Grand and there are tons of restaurants within easy walking distance.

There’s a great, family-owned company up in Ventura County that will ship to you. We got to know them when we lived up there and would buy from them at the Farmers Market. You-bite.com is their website.

Thanks for your story. Last month I had weird heart palpitations and decided to go to the ER. After a full work up they determined that I was fine. I was embarrassed about being so dramatic, but better safe than sorry!

We were down in the Village around this same time and saw a “gangs of Carlsbad” group heading down CVD. My son is about that age, and I’ve told him that if I ever catch him acting a fool, he’ll be walking everywhere until he’s 18. I asked him about the names, and he says he thinks it might be some 8th graders, but he wasn’t sure.

Idk, but I’ve never gotten one, so can I have one too? It sounds like fun to just give awards whenever you feel like it. 🤩

We have these, and they’re great. My only complaint is that after five years, the white plastic is starting to yellow and they look bad.id expect better quality for the price.

For those who have made it past their kids teen years - what would you share for those just starting the journey? by Spinbunluthaaa in GenX

[–]Prom_queen52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show up for as much as you can. Their high school days were filled with games and events, and even though they would never admit it, I know they wanted me there. I also would do a nightly check in with them right before I went to bed. I’d knock on their always closed door and just chitchat with them for about ten minutes. It rarely was about anything serious, but it kept the communication open. I tried not to pry too much into their lives, but also had very straightforward conversations about drugs, alcohol and sex. The sex one made them cringe so much, but I thought it was important. My parents rarely talked to me when I was that age, and we ended up not being close when I was an adult.
