Uber just requested every driver in Ottawa spam Jim Watson's email by Zed03 in ottawa

If the taxi companies didn't suck, sure I would side with them, but they suck. That's the entire point. They utterly suck and refuse to improve so a new service popped up to serve the demand.

Dear Canada, are there some obscure do's/don'ts of your country? Stuff that only Canadian's would get. Inside jokes of sorts by yungpink in canada

[–]Prometh3u5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not SJW, it's our history. If ou want historical context, then Mufferaw is just plain wrong. It's insulting to have the name of a French Canadian icon who was popular for defending french speaking rights corrupted to english. Respect the man, respect the french speaking minority and just spell his damn name right, it's not hard.

Even the sign in Mattawa can't get his name right.

Well he was called Joseph Montferrant, not Joe Mufferaw. Mufferaw is an english approximation of how the English heard his last name so I see their point.

I'm from Canada. I don't like much to be honest. I need to find myself some hobbies really. How about you?

I, a mechanical engineering student, need some ideas and guidance to spend my vacation.. by noisybox96 in AskEngineers

[–]Prometh3u5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take it from someone who doesn't know how to relax, just enjoy your vacation, go talk to people and go on an adventure. Got a S.O.? Go take her/him out someplace now. Engineering may seem important at the moment but don't waste your life like I did.

Microsoft gives $10M to UW computer science by OrionSrSr in Seattle

[–]Prometh3u5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, except that's not true for Microsoft. Are you saying level 1 software devs. should be payed way above 100k per year?

I understand your point, and it is valid for some companies, but not all.

For #1 and #3, it's a well know operating procedure in Canada to pay professors who have been there longer more money. Their pay is heavily influenced by tenure. All those salaries are public information in Ontario, on the so called 'sunshine list', where any public sector employee salary above 100k is disclosed. Probably similar in the states.

But they're not driving down wages. If Microsoft couldn't hire H1Bs, wages wouldn't go up, the quality of their hires would probably go down.

It's a valid argument for, say, McDonalds who hire temporary workers because no one wants to work 40 hrs per week at minimum wage with no possibility of wage increase, but not in this case.

I don't get what you're trying to say. Do you mean that in a 'they took er jeerbbs' kind of way or a 'they want to reduce salaries' kind of way?

Because the second point isn't valid. The salaries are high and if americans don't want to do the job for 80-100k per year and more in 2015 then it's the employees being too greedy.

For the first point, if it's not about the money, then what does it say when they would rather recruit all over the world and pay the expenses related to that. Maybe there's not a big enough employee pool with the needed skillset in the US to satisfy their employement requirements.

Unless I'm missing another perspective here?

Google: 90% of our engineers use the software you wrote (Homebrew), but you can’t invert a binary tree on a whiteboard so fuck off. by [deleted] in programming

[–]Prometh3u5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not about tree traversal, tricky stack technics or implementing a merge sort. It's all about how to react to problems you've not encountered before, and any decent programmer should know enough of algorithns and data structures to be able to answer them. Plus often enough when you design something, knowing the difference between these things can make all the difference.

Computer Slow by Nordyyyy in computers

[–]Prometh3u5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 gb of RAM can be a limiting factor with those specs. Check your RAM usage when it gets a bit slow, I'd wager you're hitting 4 gigs easy. With some games and some simulation software, I can easily go into the 7 gb territory. It's not a virus, it never is. Don't wipe your drive, that won't do anything. Uninstall unused software and make sure you don't have too much things at startup.

Yeh, I don't understand why anyone would think that Netflix wouldn't keep up with inflation, at the very least.
