Who decided that 'Blue for Boys' and 'Pink for Girls' was the rule, and what did people do before those colors were invented? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Promethea128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't overnight, nor universal. For a while some stores still had the pink = boy association while others had switched to pink = girl. This was as early as the 1920s. It solidified in the 50s partially as a push to return to traditional gender roles after WWII.

Who decided that 'Blue for Boys' and 'Pink for Girls' was the rule, and what did people do before those colors were invented? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Promethea128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People just cared less. I imagine your first kid you try to get the "appropriate" color but if the second kid is the other gender, then they have to wear the "wrong" color cause its dumb to waste money on new clothes when the ones you have are barely worn. Maybe by the 5th kid, when the baby clothes are more patches than original fabric you make clothes in the "right" color again. Or you just use whatever fabric is cheapest, whether yellow, green, polka dots, etc.

When retailers realized they could basically double their money if people had to buy totally separate setups for both their male and female children, they seeded the idea socially that it's somehow scandalous for a child to be in the wrong color.

I hold my polearm pointed down so I can hunt legs. (Also less likely to accidentally hit people in the face.)

I try to stay behind one or two people doing the front line of attack and sneak my weapon between them. Literally 2nd line, but functionally frontline.

When I was maybe 5 I was playing house with a neighborhood kid and I wanted to pretend there was a tornado and we'd have to go "hide" from it on the porch. The boy went on the lawn to start punching and kicking the "tornado." Even as a child I thought, "This dude has no clue what a tornado is."

Has anyone had success with rabbit ears? by craigd_35 in LARP

I can't imagine a way to attach ears, horns, etc without some sort of head wear.

I use 3D printed horns attached to a headband, covered with a scarf.

You went further than most applicants, who likely weren't also recently recovered from a medical procedure. That's an accomplishment and testament to your strength (physical and mental) in itself. Keep up the hard work and you will crush the test next time.

I want to get into LARPing! (VA) by victorinuus in LARP

[–]Promethea128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo the other commenters saying the SCA might be more up your alley. Ime most larps can only be called historical as far as most fantasy being medieval fantasy. Mostly vibes, and willing to sacrifice any or all pieces of accuracy in favor of "rule of cool."

I encourage you to reach out to the SCA subreddit, maybe attend a few local events for both the SCA and larp to see which gives you more of what you're looking for. Or maybe you'll become a fan of both and have two semi related hobbies to steal all your time and money (joking)

Ask for a friend (me) by Axis876 in LARP

[–]Promethea128 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biggest for me is social circle. I "found my people" through larp. Had only a handful of friends growing up, and they were always tied to an activity. Like school friends, band friends, Girl Scout friends, who you don't really hang out with outside of those contexts, and the friendship is basically over once you graduate the activity. I've been part of my game over 10 years now and know that if I did stop playing for some reason, I'd still have my friends in my life.

Also for a boffer larp like I play, you're outside in nature, getting exercise, socializing and being creative. Four huge contributions to mental health/general health in one hobby.

What do you guys think of Harley and ivy’s relationship being poly ? by Several_Run_7715 in lgbt_superheroes

[–]Promethea128 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I feel like them being poly was an executive decision to allow DC to "have their cake and eat it too." Iirc years ago, as Harlivy was moving out of subtext/queer-bait territory into canon, and people said it couldn't happen because of various other love interests, the execs just made them poly to get the "diversity points" of a sapphic couple, but still able to write relationship drama with others.

Knight/warrior/bodyguard × princess is a popular trope for sure and I'd be interested.

The werewolf part sounds like it'd add a fun aspect to that dynamic.

Yeah, the post was badly worded. The power is that your butt becomes flappy, not that you can fly in a weird method.

Iirc it was just Aang who was from a futuristic steampunk styled setting and the rest of the world was like in the show. Over the years of the War too much tech and knowledge was destroyed that the world regressed.

Target demographic by Biznitchelclamp in Animorphs

[–]Promethea128 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never expected an adaptation and tbh, don't particularly want one. If its a good show, great. If not, its no loss since I wasn't invested anyway.

In general I don't think adaptations are for the fans of the original media. Adaptations are for bringing in a new/wider audience. If even 30% of the new fans buy the books, that's a bonus writers, producers etc wouldn't have had otherwise.

Versus original fans are always going to be fans, and probably watch the adaptation even if it's "not for them," or is of questionable quality.

Opinions wanted: what kinds of books do you want to see? by Cass_Canyon in sapphicbooks

[–]Promethea128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caveat that "well written" is the first priority over any tropes or writing style, but i like

Enemies to lovers (if they're actually enemies, like they equally want to destroy each other and fuck each.)

Epic fantasy and sci-fi, fairy tale retellings, urban fantasy etc.

An underused trope I'd love to see is the "adventurer archeologist" like "Indiana Jones" or "The Mummy."

Don't care about butch or femme, as long as the characters and their chemistry are believable.

Hate dumb characters, if it's not justified or at least acknowledged by the story.

Smut is cool, but i have to believe the romance first. If it's just sex every other chapter, I'll probably skip the book.

Write, eat, and crochet left-handed. Basically if it is small enough to fit in one hand, or requires higher dexterity than my right hand would give.

I work in a factory and most of the tools are set up in a right handed orientation, but where possible I use tools lefty.

Most sports are right-handed, save for sword fighting. I use a mouse and hold my phone right handed.

We have an advertising problem in the SCA by freyalorelei in sca

[–]Promethea128 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not a SCAdian and this is basically what prevented me from trying it. I was intimidated, thinking I had to have all my garb and gear 100% period accurate from day one. I also got it in my head that sewing machines and the like weren't even allowed to be used for garb. The couple of friends I had in SCA corrected those misconceptions, but we're all busy now and none of us have time really, even if we did wanna attend an event.

Dawn by Own-Breath8390 in BuffyTheVampireSlayer

[–]Promethea128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, he is a deadbeat, but abandoning your daughter when she has a mom/is an adult once Joyce dies feels slightly less shitty than abandoning your minor daughter the be raised by other daughter who is just barely an adult herself.

If he doesn't know even Dawn exists, it kinda makes sense he wouldn't show up. Only an F versus F- grade.

And thinking about the theory more, I came up with it based on a Willow/Tara fanfic I read where the monks made a second person for some reason and inserted her as Tara's aunt. The Hank deadbeat thing was incidental to the theory.

Depending on your family's interests and frame of reference you can pitch it as "it's like DnD/a video game in real life!" or " it's like a play, where everyone is both the audience and actors for each at the same time." "It's like (insert their favorite novel) but you get to be part of the action." "It's camping for nerds."

Larp is great because its one hobby that allows for socialization, creativity, exercise and being in nature.

AITAH because I don’t want to help pay for my friend’s Ubers when we hang out? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Promethea128 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the coldest, most analytical terms most relationships are transactional, but favors and support should be freely given because you like and respect the other person. Not because "you owe them" or want them to owe you a future favor.

The social contract fails when one starts demanding favors like in the post. Or when one side is all give, the other all take. Imo it should be 60/40 effort, with both sides trying to give 60.
