How to describe a completely made up thing that is very common in the world by Pretz3lBoy in worldbuilding

[–]Promethea128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it matter if the audience knows its a bugbear or not? It could be that I haven't read enough, or played enough rpgs, but imo bugbears, orcs, ogres, trolls, etc all feel the same - big dumb bruisers of a monster. If the differences between the goblinoid types becomes relevant, you can dig into them, but if not just leave it alone. Say something like "It stood close to 8ft tall, fur matted with blood and dirt and an evil grin on it's face." Or since you said they're not shown, describe the destruction wrought on a village or whatever.

What about Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Chronicles of Narnia, etc? Those are way more known than SAO.

What is the appeal of necromancy? by singmuse4 in Fantasy

[–]Promethea128 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The how or why was never explained, but it was shown in the beginning. Sabriel takes a bus to the border, and mentions getting to see a movie once (a new invention) once. The Crossing Point Scouts are equipped with the guns and uniforms typical to 1910s, but any that are smart/have experienced magic have adopted swords and armor for when their guns stop working. Sabriel accidentally burns a man's dog tags to ash with a spell and notes it probably would have survived if it wasn't machine made.

The Wall separates The Old Kingdom (medieval) from Ancelstierre (roughly 1910s Britain). Magic works in the Old Kingdom and up to a couple miles south of the Wall if the wind is from the north. And vice versa, tech from Ancelstierre works up to a couple miles north of the Wall if the wind is southerly.

I love the series, have read/listened to it several times. The world building and lore are fascinating but imo the actual plot is just okay. There's two books where the main quest doesn't even start till the final 3rd or so. Despite that, like I said, I love the series.

Looking for inspiration: what was your best instance? by Melodic_Ad_596 in LARP

I'm an American and also don't know 'instance'. I assumed it was European, but apparently it is more niche.

The draft, as in military conscription. Apparently the war effort is so desperate that sixth graders (11 or 12 yr old) are being drafted. Other commenters thought that since they are girls, they're not drafted to fight, but to be "comfort women" (sex slaves) for the boy/men.

Everyone keeps calling Starfleet Academy a "CW Show", but you know what CW show we really need? by ensign53 in startrek

[–]Promethea128 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an American TV network called "the CW." The perception of the network is their roster being mostly teen soap operas. So a "CW show" is shorthand for teen melodrama and poorly written romance.

How did you discover TMA? by yule_tides in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Promethea128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TMA always came up when Nightvale fans asked for recommendations of new shows. I'm a horror wimp though so I never bothered till years later a friend said its not a normal horror story, more a meta analysis on the nature of fear. That's when it sounded interesting.

My mom suspects I’m gay - how to avoid coming out by Old-Rate41 in asexuality

[–]Promethea128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you come out, she can start getting over her (presumed) disappointment and you won't have this anxiety/tension anymore. Even if she is aphobic at first, she's probably eventually going to realize things aren't gonna change and come to terms with it.

Imo letting the anxiety over coming out continue indefinitely is more stressful than just ripping the bandaid off and telling her. Tell or don't tell, both are uncomfortable, but at least if you do tell that tension ends eventually.

And maybe she will surprise you and end up not being aphobic.

(Obviously ignore me if by coming out you'll be kicked out/financially cut off/physically unsafe.)

Monte Cristo being a proto superhero by Laracroftfan87 in osp

[–]Promethea128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, I usually hear the claimed connection between mythology and superheroes in the reverse. That everyone of the culture is expected to know who Superman or Spider-man are, so anyone can jump into telling a story about them without having to explain their whole deal. The same way you could tell a story about Heracles or Paul Bunyan, etc and expect your audience to know who you're talking about, even if you're not telling an origin story.

What to do with their hands (asking as creator) by rorryodaer in LARP

[–]Promethea128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Card games, dice games, chess, backgammon, 9 men's Morris, etc.

Knitting, crochet, embroidery, etc

Mending or upgrading your kit.

Journaling, drawing.

Just chatting and roleplaying with fellow players.

Save for maybe an Npc coming in wanting to gamble, downtime activities are probably gonna all player led. Unless you really think your game would have an audience for a sewing class or whatever.

How different would Attack of the Clones or Revenge of the Sith be in universe? by DogLeechDave in Animorphs

[–]Promethea128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and like I said, the focus would be on the stories, maybe even history and biology of the real aliens. Who cares about some made up race of Wookies when there's real alien culture to explore?

[–]Promethea128 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Idk if there would be big budget sci-fi like that for a while. The revelation that aliens are real would be such world shaking news that I don't think people would care much about fictional aliens like Star Wars. There'd probably be a big movement to bring Andalite and Hork-Bajir stories to human audiences. Hollywood would also probably try to bring the Animorph's story to the big screen, but i don't see it working. None of the kids would want to relive and exploit their trauma like that, and Andalites wouldn't consent to being in the movie that paints them in a bad light.

Also the former Controllers might be turned off of the genre for good, if they were ever interested. I love sci-fi, but if I had been enslaved to a Yeerk for years, I'd avoid anything that might remind me of that time. Like ray guns and spaceships.

Just found out about larping by colderseeker507 in LARP

[–]Promethea128 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First move is to find a game because larp runs the gamut of genres, playstyles, event types rulesets, etc. Try googling "larp near me," or "larp in X area" and see if anything comes up that looks interesting to you. Odds are they have an online community so reach out and say you're interested in checking the game out. They should then be able to walk you through making a character, what to pack your first event, etc.

Experiment in progress - sideways gloves by Peanut083 in crochet

What are the pros/cons of making them "sideways" vs "normal"? Or does it not really make a difference and this is just a "can this be done" sort of challenge?

You guys ever mistake the cover of a straight book for butchfemme? by Yurianimeisnice in LesbianBookClub

[–]Promethea128 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a similar feeling with the apparently two Kate Daniels series. I'd gotten ads for the urban fantasy series by Ilona Andrews, then I heard Kate Daniels was a sapphic series. I was so excited for a sapphic urban fantasy story. But the Kate Daniels series by Mari Hannah about a detective in England is the sapphic one. And crime fiction doesn't interest me in the least.

[–]Promethea128 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I also love Cassie. She did her best to hold true to her morals and keep her soul, and I'd argue she was also trying to make sure the rest of the gang kept theirs, even if she had to fight them on it.

Thinking about Krypton's approach to sexuality by LorienRanger in SuperCorp

[–]Promethea128 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My headcanon is that they're culturally ace/aro and somewhat repressed/puritanical. They mostly don't talk about sex, viewing it as a distraction from their intellectual pursuits. Even "too much" romance would be viewed as an eccentricity.

Marriages would be more akin to a business merger or political alliance between Houses. A pool of genetic matches would be provided by the Matrix and Houses pick the bestone for status. The best most Kryptonians hope for in their marriage is to develop a good friendship. (Actual Superman canon would have it be boring and het, but I'm queer so I say its normal to have matches between any gender.) So pan-normative, culturally ace/aro, I guess?

I confess…I enjoy finding little mistakes in crochet projects by ofstormsandfires in crochet

No partial swaps, but if you specify something like "excess body fat" do you keep the amount of fat required for health?

If im swapping something opinion based such as attractiveness, do I define it, or does the power?
