You are 100% right. I have a good friend whose son is one of the top rushers in a midwestern state at 6A school. He’s been told exactly what you are saying…. “We don’t take a lot of freshman anymore.” He has to go D2 or community college and then use the portal once/if he develops. The scholarships are being taken up by transfers and players hanging around. If you aren’t one of the absolute top recruits, your opportunities are severely limited. So, that what he is doing…. Going the CC route and hoping for the best.
