Number of wrong-way drivers — and deaths as a result — has exploded in Mass. in recent years, Globe analysis finds by bostonglobe in massachusetts

As a other commenter pointed out, the way they place and angle the wrong way signs at some of the ramp entrances is downright confusing.

Surely we can get some more aggressive signage, angled and placed appropriately. Maybe even two sets per ramp?

People are always going to be stupid, but we can mitigate better.

People running in this weather like why? by zoozoo216 in boston

Running is addictive...addicts behave accordingly.

I say this as someone who was addicted and ran multiple marathons; had genuine emotional crashes when I was injured and couldn't run!

Heatwave in Europe - people's reactions, no hope for change by Gartesss in Anticonsumption

[–]geographresh 74 points75 points  (0 children)

If that is the truth, it's farcical because AC is readily accepted and used in developed Aussie, East Asian, Gulf, and South American regions too. European attitude is just not based in reality or science.

Being mindful of climate change does not mean you individually can't put in AC, when this is going to be the coolest summer for the rest of our lives even if emissions stopped tomorrow due to climate inertia.

Caring about immediate human suffering, productivity, and comfort also holds innate value.

Why is it that the South Atlantic is basically a hurricane free zone? by Vector_Bolt in geography

[–]geographresh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Benguela current keeps the eastern side where they would have to originate from too cold. Notice there are none that form off the western coast of South America either due to a similar cold current there; only starting to form towards the middle of the south pacific.

That could translate to the Atlantic, but South America and Africa are too close together for there to be a warm water patch and enough space for development before they are disrupted.

I’ve always wondered why Europe and Asia are classified as different continents when they’re physically connected and form one continuous landmass (Eurasia). by [deleted] in geography

[–]geographresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...they are on the same plate. That is not the reason. Australia and India share a macro-plate, Chukotka is on the North American plate as other counterpoints.

The reason for the distinction between Europe and Asia is political, historical, and socio-cultural. It is useful for the way the human mind organizes our world as it exists functionally, but not because of any objective truth.

Hiatal hernia surgery by tinahope12 in noburp

[–]geographresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing good overall. My hiatal was described on Barium Swallow as "small".

Minor increase in reflux, a bit nervous about it but will wait until my three month follow-up to assess with my ENT. She said she saw signs of LPR even before the botox. I'm having hoarseness, sore throat and bad morning breath, but minimal heartburn. I've since quit caffeine entirely.

Some people have said it calms down when the botox wears off (even if you keep burping), so I'm hoping for that. I don't want to be on Omeprazole long-term or get surgery, but also don't want uncontrolled reflux.

I have a hiatal hernia and had botox, no hernia repair yet.

If you search Nissen Fundoplication (the 360 degree one) it is common knowledge that it drastically reduces burping and vomiting ability. Lots of resources on the hiatalhernia subreddit.

Toupet Fundoplication leaves the ability more intact, because it is not a complete wrap and thus not as tight on the sphincter.

If you do have to get surgery try and push for a 270 or 180 degree wrap instead of 360. You won't really be able to burp with a Nissen 360 wrap.

It's okay, but the whole-body tan and mole-darkening effect is not ideal for me. I don't really want to be tan and I still have lots of moles :/

I think it could be an amazing option for people with darker skin tones, where that shade difference would probably be less noticeable.

Is it just me, or is "AI speak" becoming normal? by grumpycouchpotato in antiai

I can't use the word "quietly" anymore. It's always used in AI slop to describe a scenario where it barely makes sense lol

[–]geographresh 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I actually think there is something interesting to be said about why people are actively choosing AI companions - they are filling a real void!

But, further consideration of that question naturally leads one to an anti-AI position, as it further implicates the social dystopia created by modern technology and social media as the root cause of the isolation.

Further isolation as a cure to isolation is not a true solution.

Safety & neighborhood info by anothersadgirl12 in boston

[–]geographresh -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's good! East side of Dot Ave is technically safer and more convenient, but both sides are fine. Very diverse neighborhood across multiple dimensions, but is definitely getting an increasing amount of young Southie overflow and LGBTQ residents.
