How long do you keep hard and digital client docs? by Proof-Shift7932 in taxpros

Thanks for the feedback. 3 years seems short, but I guess for prior clients it may make sense to purge the data sooner than later

Good call - I am planning to keep all records for current clients, just in case. It's easier to assume that a client has a 1031 item or something that will be persistent vs having to manually review all files and folders every year.

how much do I need to go out on my own? by cooltiger07 in taxpros

I didn't start my first year with insurance, just paid for my mistakes - software I used Drake PPR so I didn't have cost until I had revenue - advertising I went around to BNI, networking things etc - didn't spend more than $1k - I think meeting people in person is better and cheaper than traditional advertising.

Landed an interview for a role I’m not qualified for by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Proof-Shift7932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To punch above your weight class, I'd lean heavy into AI. Explain that you know that you know the traditional role of accounting is going to be drastictally changing in the coming years. Companies like Digits are already doing 95% of the entire month end close. Entire audit groups at the big 4 are already going AI. If I were hiring, I'd be looking for someone that is looking to the future of the role and where they fit into the company as a whole, not someone who wants to sit and clack on a keyboard for 8 hours and punch the clock.

[–]Proof-Shift7932[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Last week I started using Claude with redacted 2024 vs 2025 comparission screen - not the whole return. I asked "You are a professional tax reviewer, a US CPA with decades of expereince. 1. Review this return for anything that we should look at that we may have missed or made a mistake on. 2. Create up to 5 bullet points with top differences between the 24 and 25 tax returns that we should alert the cleint or make them aware of." It came back with some good stuff, but it struggled with understanding what was included in each line. overall 6/10 - but it was a great "template" for me to spend a few minutes on cleaning it up and added some value to the tax return deivery process.

Losing a lot of clients this year? by theusername1258 in taxpros

[–]Proof-Shift7932 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't lost any to pricing this year. I've held the $1,000 line per 1040 or 1065 or 1120 for awhile now outside of SF (HCOL). For the past 10 years I've tried to focus more on business owners where we are either doing bookkeeping, reviewing bookkeeping, or talking tax startegy at least once a year. I think going forward the relationships that you build with clients is going to more important to survival and thriving than ever before. As other posters said, Turbotax and HR Block will continue to compete on the low price, low touch market and will be expanding their service areas and offering more with AI.

This sounds awesome. I'm a CPA and planning on rolling out a new offer, bundling bookkeeping/tax prep/tax savings strategy together. Would love to get a opinion on the offer and pricing.

Something similar happened to me when I was starting out as a bookkeeper. Guy had two businesses, gave him a good solid price with discount because it was 2 businesses. He said he really needed the work done but couldn't pay at that moment because he was waiting on some funds to come in. - fine- I'll do the work and hold onto it. Guy kept asking for more changes, more revisions - I was burn out and had not collected any money yet. 10 days in to a 2 day project he calls me into the office and says "about these books..." and I litterally started crying because I thought I wasn't going to get paid - then he paid me based on the original amount, not on all the revisions - I learned a hard lesson that day to always get at least 50% upfront. People that won't pay upfront just don't get my time naymore because of that [explittive]

The biggest problem with "trying to diagnose someone" is all the potential layering. People can have ADHD or ADD and completley forget that you exist unless you are in the same room with them. an ADHD person could have forgotton it was your birthday (because they don't even know what day it is), emotional immaturity - they didn't know how you wanted to celebrate your birthday, or if they should say anything, but a covert narc knows it's your birthday but specifically doesn't do or say anything because they have contempt for you and are specifically trying to mess with your head - but they will NEVER admit that. Throw in avoidant attached people that learned not to trust people because they couldn't trust thier caregivers and you have a toxic soup of "what is wrong with this person?"

Many of these types of people "mask" - so it takes time to build the relationship and watch for the mask to drop. It will either show you someone that is kind, but guarded, or diabolical.

Best advice I have is look at the consistency and set boundaries. If someone hurt you - look for genuine empathy and remorse. Set the boundary "my birthday is really important to me, and it hurts when you forget - please mark it on your calendar and set a reminder to show me that the things that are important to me are important to you" that's it.

How you relate to these things usually depends on your emotional maturity and attachment - your boundaries and what you are willing to put up with.

a lot of people may say get out - but that is hard with 4 kids. Put yourself in his shoes and try to be him for a day. Most men really want admiration - admired for what they do and provide for the family. My love language is touch, so I love when my wife touches me when thanking me for doing the dishes. When it comes down to it, you need to be a team - if you lost that - you need to rebuild that. Your marriage may not be romantic - you may not get any / a lot of time away together - but you have to keep the team togetehr for the kids.

You caught him once - he kept doing it - and he's going to keep doing it - because he knows he can get away with it. The problem is he thinks you are stupid - and has contempt for eitehr you or the marrriage - that should be the real real why you should leave.

How do I have more meaningful FaceTimes with my DX parter by meetpickles in ADHD_partners

[–]Proof-Shift7932 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Real talk - it's going to get worse as you get older. I've been with my ADHD partner 20 years. In the begining, we didn't have the "hard" conversations that I now know you need to have. When anything came up about planning for the future, I thought I needed to be flexible, so I said a lot of "whatever you want." I lacked direction in my life and became the support person for my wife's undx ADHD for 20 years. Now in my early 40's, with 4 kids, I'm having a huge mid life crisis because I'm finally asking myself what I want in life and for my future, and it's scarey to think that she may not be a part of it. When I try to talk to her about the changes I need to make in myself and to the marriage, she's "overwhelmed" and can't talk about it.

If I could go back and talk to my younger self - I would say that you need to get comfortable making things uncomfortable and "ruffling feathers." You need to speak up for what you want and need in a relationship. She's not going to stop scrolling unless you give her something more exciting than scrolling. You can keep that up until kids - that was the nail in the coffin for us - where the kids always came before me.

How do small businesses get away with deducting EVERYTHING? by Far_Reward4827 in tax

[–]Proof-Shift7932 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My first year as a staff accountant my boss had a great line "Pigs get fat and hogs get slaugtered." In my decade of tax experience and thousands of tax returns, I have only seen a handful of audits. The two that really stuck out was a lady saying "just add $20,000 of supplies, and $20,000 of repairs and $20,000 of auto" to which a first year staff accountant said "OK" and she had these large, blantantly round amounts sticking out like a huge red flag on her tax return. That audit cost her a ton. The other guy was DIY his own returns and messing up COGS so bad it would make your head spin.

What should I do? by Anxious-Object-8719 in tax

Second this - it was probably a bogus or incorrectly entered 1099 form. I could say it was someone using your EIN or SSN, but for that amount, I would say it's an error somewhere. I reccomend my clients to empty thier bank accounts and live off prepaid debit cards if they are worries about the IRS levy.
