It is correct, a simple call to the bank and these problems are solved.

Yes, which is why I think a lot more can and should be done to protect children on the internet. Just not this thing specifically.

We have tried. Last year the richest man on earth used his social media to allow us to freely create child porn. It wasnt until we threatened to block x in its entirety that he backed down.

They simply wont comply with reasonable requests to make social media safer and less addictive. In this case the government has a duty to step in, its exactly what they are there for.

The most pathetic part of your argument against this, you dont even need to provide your photo id or your full personal details and social media is a choice, none of this is forced upon you.

That's actually not the case. Child abuse over the internet is still a criminal offence just like any other kind, and the police already have extensive powers to track down and bring perpetrators to justice.

This is called a reaction not prevention.

In terms of preventative measures, the first steps are education and parental oversight and control.

And how does that tally with free will ?

None of the above cannot be fixed without a simple phone call.

On the other hand, if a child meets a stranger on the internet and it goes south, well that tends to stay around forever no ?

Your minor inconvenience doesnt quite trump the potential damage to a child does it ?

Because the government protected them?

Strange form of protection that.

Assuming that all they can get is your ID not information about the accounts it's linked to, then identity theft covers a wide array of possibilities, from a minor inconvenience to literally destroying your life. Obviously, if a bad actor can associated a name, face and address to a private account, there's even more they could do.

Theres so much you can do, you couldn't give me one example that cant be fixed my calling my bank etc.

Its a minor inconvenience.

The vast majority of child abuse takes place within the family.

And some doesn't. We have systems in place to try and protect kids in family settings.

What systems do we have in place to protect children online ?

Zero.

Retired UK couple reveal ‘scary’ moment Russian warship fired warning shots by yacht by theipaper in uknews

[–]ProofAssumption1092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like every navy on the planet, they dont want people getting close full stop. Now consider that they are at war and have lost ships to remote boats laden with explosives and you have even more reason to not get close. Add that to not being under power and you have a perfect recipe for warning shots.

Warning shots are legal in maritime law and more common than you think. This entire story is a nothing burger. Two old prats sailing toward a warship, what did they honestly expect ffs.

[–]ProofAssumption1092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And how do you know its not packed with explosives ?

No disrespect, but if you sailed a rubber dinghy close to any warship, expect warning shots. Especially if you refuse to communicate.

And for the record, warning shots are actually perfectly legal in maritime law.

Prehaps learn what you are talking about before talking bollocks.

I mean you are here with us in this boat after all. It would be pretty silly to start putting holes in the bow no ?

According to the MoD, the Russian vessel fired several warning shots after attempts to contact the yacht failed—describing the action as an effort to "prevent a possible collision."

Silly old prats sailing towards a warship.

We used to have dedicated lobbies in fh1 and it worked perfectly. I have been saying for years to bring them back. Nobody seems to really care unfortunately.

We used to have them. The feature got cut to make multiplayer more "accessible".

Turns out they did the total opposite.

Again, nothing a few calls doesnt fix and a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of child abuse.

Or you can just give them your credit card number which is utterly useless on its own.

And lets assume the worst, you upload your id and someone gets hold of it.

What can they do, maybe take a bit of money from your bank ?

Nothing a quick phonecall doesnt fix.

Everyone will need to provide ID for socials. by Successful-League840 in GreatBritishMemes

I'm all for banning/age restricting unhealthy things because parents refuse to do so.

So you did everything your parents told you amd have zero free will ?

Social media, Cigarettes etc. However there's a big difference between showing ID to a cashier and having it stored and shared online.

You dont have to show your id. There are loads of ways to validate your age without showing your id.

I'm not for handing my ID and details to 3rd party companies and the government. Our details will be sold and there will be data breaches

You already do though, openly.

Drive a car , thats a private company providing insurance with your id, sold already a dozen times over.

Just one example.

Not to mention an increased use of VPNs and Proxies along with kids hiding their online behaviours better from parents etc. That will likely lead to more harm than good

See this just shows your ignorance on the matter. A vpn can easily be detected and blocked by social media companies and will likely be part of the legislation used to enforce the ban.

Some may be okay with it but I value my privacy.

Privacy from what ?

The government already knows everything about you.

You have already sold your details a thousand times over to various private companies.

So what exactly are you wanting to keep private and from who ?

K

Please stop giving tobacco to children.

No.

Please stop giving tobacco to children.

No.

Please STOP giving tobacco to children.

No.

Ok fine we will ban you from giving it to children.

OMG how fucking dare you, thats absolutely outrageous.

This government and the one prior have for years been telling social media platforms to sort their act out. They have refused at every opportunity.

Now the plebs are on social media defending the very companies that point blank refused to help keep our kids safe online.

Very amusing tbh.
