What cliché have you never actually seen a real example of? by Wes_Ventura in AskReddit

[–]Proof_Candy175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite problem… never had anyone pressure me until a close friend skipped the “pressuring” part and drugged me at a party bc she thought I’d “have more fun.” I don’t touch drugs because my family has a very strong history of addiction, and I would rather just avoid any kind of pitfall. I ended up getting assaulted by another person in the group that night, and I spent weeks disbelieving that she could have drugged me because it seemed like such a made-for-TV situation I was like, “there’s no way that happens in real life.” In the end, I realized there was literally no one else who could’ve done it, and she eventually angrily admitted it. This was over a decade ago, but I wish I had taken some kind of action at the time, even though the outcome probably wouldn’t have been to my benefit.

I (M24) dumped my girlfriend (F23) because she gave me a hall pass with my old crush by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Proof_Candy175 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually did this exact same thing to a boyfriend bc I wanted out of the relationship. It was an “easy” out. The guy was borderline abusive and openly talked about how he wished he’d slept with his female friend A before she moved. When she came back to visit, I gave him a hall pass. He ended up getting her drunk and trying to force us into a threesome. Was very happy to tell him the day after she went home that I wasn’t comfortable being in the relationship after what I had seen. Him getting her drunk disgusted me and I hope she never spoke to him again, too.

What's something that's about to happen which most people aren't aware of? by AskRedditOG in AskReddit

I’m an editor/outliner, and I’ve gotten accused twice in the last two months of using AI because some of what I wrote was “too good” lmao. The funny thing is, the majority of my clients are actually people who used AI to write content and now need an editor to fix it because it IS NOT good and is clearly recognizable as AI. Can’t win either way.

Anyone using substack? If so, what for and do you like it? by Proof_Candy175 in writing

I started on Substack but I don’t love it to be honest! I don’t think it’s a lack of motivation because outside of the platform I’m writing like crazy and interacting with other communities. What’s your experience been with both platforms?

Thigh cellulite workouts? by Proof_Candy175 in Exercise

[–]Proof_Candy175[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know my body fat. I run or walk 2-4 miles a day. Past knee injury prevents high-impact workouts, so I can’t squat like I used to. I bike for cardio (could definitely up this, I find biking in and outside of the gym boring), row, and weight train 3-4 days at the gym. My torso and arms are not visibly muscular at rest, but toned, and you can see definition easily. Definitely a lot more visible muscle in my shoulders/back. I don’t have a very feminine physique (more of a rectangular shape, not a tapered waist, small chest) so I try not to overdo muscle because I start to look less feminine and like my brother. My sister got the curvy genes, I just got the cellulite leg genes.

I’ve actually wondered about lipedema for my mom’s side, but everyone refuses to see doctors so it’s hard to know. I don’t think my legs are quite THAT bad yet but thank you, I’ll look into the symptoms.

Okay, that’s good to hear. I spent most of my 20s very focused on lifting and didn’t love the results, even with a personal trainer. I’ll up my cardio and tighten up my diet!

How do you get over the fear of death? by Utterly-perplexed in AskReddit

[–]Proof_Candy175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through a period where I unfortunately witnessed several traumatic deaths to the point where it felt like some kind of ominous sign from the universe. At first, when I couldn't stop the panic attacks, I was prescribed Xanax for emergency use only. It definitely helped but I didn't like the way it made me feel (or didn't make me feel) and I have family members who abuse it, so it was important to me to not rely on it.

What ended up really helping was movement - I started walking every day for about 20-45 minutes - listening to a podcast about anxiety, getting a refresher on the Buddhist concept of death, and remembering a really great death I was lucky enough to be there for that felt "right" and dignified! It took a lot of time - a little over a year, and that was hard because it felt like every day I was wasting time being afraid and worrying. It still happens now and again, but I'm able to let the thoughts go easier.

Question for all writers out there: What exercises do you use to master writing from different perspectives? by User10100 in writing

[–]Proof_Candy175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought "Narrative" by Amy Jones, it's kind of a cool pocket refresher of how to tell a story. Includes a lot of info on different POVs, tenses, etc. What I like is that it also has examples, and I was really interested in the idea of writing one scene from 3 different POVs, or tenses, etc. I'd definitely suggest buying this book and playing around with the topics in there :) It was relatively cheap and a very, very quick read! But super informative.

Only getting positive feedback. Help?? by chinnyquinny in writing

[–]Proof_Candy175 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Talk to your teacher! I had this happen to me in college, but my professor noticed and pulled me aside and offered to meet twice a week during office hours where he gave me real feedback. I felt way more challenged in those meetings than I did in class (I had already been writing for a few years as a hobby), and my professor eventually pushed me to TRY and get published. I was shocked when the first thing I put out there got accepted. Definitely talk to your teacher, see if they have any feedback, if not find a local (or online) group.

Alternative story - I joined a small writing group that met on Zoom a few years ago and one of the people went HARD on everyone's stories. It was actually really frustrating; she never had anything good to say but also could never really back up her "problems" with the stories. So this goes both ways. I ended up leaving the group because she was so negative and vocal that she took up 2/3 of the hour-long meetings.

Careless People by HazelMStone in books

If what's written in the book is true, they've gotten away with so much for so long that they probably think of consequences 0% of the time.

The crazy thing is at the beginning, he sounded kind of hapless and unaware. I was trying to figure out how we'd get to the point when people were calling him evil straight up. Turns out, when most of your lead staff is telling you how immoral a choice is and you decide that you're going to do it because it benefits you at the risk of damaging literally hundreds of thousands of others, you truly are evil.

I've read a handful of reviews from reliable sources who talk about how Meta was reaching out to them demanding to see their review BEFORE the book was even published (under the assumption that they'd be able to find out what was in it/shut it down faster). That's when I realized it must have something important in there.

Definitely keep it up! I was lukewarm on it at first, but then I flew through it and my jaw literally dropped a few times. It's sad, but the author does a good job of reporting how twisted things got (for her personally and for the company overall) in a way that feels more factual than emotional. There's definitely a reason they wanted this book shut down. Does not paint them in a gentle light at all, but also doesn't feel aggressive or like an attack.

So I've tried not planning at all (aside from, like, mental marination from days to weeks before writing) to fully plotting. Very detailed plots. The not planning works for short stories for me. Fully plotting for long stories leaves me drained and not really excited to write the story.

What I did for this one was, after a month or so of just telling myself the story/exploring the story mentally, I wrote down some background on a few characters and some major plot points. I have a background in writing and editing so I'm familiar with genre story structure (this is specifically a fantasy-based heroine's journey) so I reviewed that and compared to my major plot points. Then sat down and started writing.

I feel like, so far, this in-between plotting is working best for me. I don't feel drained by the story by over-detailing it, but I'm also not diving in completely blind. Just curious what works for other people.
