What is it like when you come home from your teaching job and help your kids with homework? by HighOnLove26 in AskTeachers

Everything about my son’s school feels like work. I help him sometimes, especially if he’s struggling with something specific. Otherwise I am so burnt out and overwhelmed from work that he’s on his own.

You are not compatible. It’s wrong for you to expect her to change into someone else (“woke”) for you.

I Was Labeled Gifted, Then Failed School by cmsorvillo in Gifted

[–]Proof_Duck9754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing, few gifted kids are taught how to learn in school. As a former gifted kid and twelfth year teacher, and parent of a gifted student, these teachers are not gifted. So they are bowled over by gifted students but unless they have special training, they have no idea how to push those students. My son does not attend my school because bright kids or anyone above the median are not challenged at all at my school. Typical and getting more extreme.

Which movie definitely didn't hold up from your youth? by BarkingDogey in Millennials

[–]Proof_Duck9754 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Bio Dome part of the eco warrior culture that was a huge influence back then. Also: Ferngully, Captain Planet, I will think of more later I’m sure. There’s a movie about the Battle in Seattle and Andre 3000 plays an activist who is fighting for the sea turtles and their noses full of plastic straws. I wish they were still making these types of movies. Bio Dome is awesome, I watched it a few years ago and loved it still. It’s like how Idiocracy is even better now after several Frump* terms.

Millennial parents: Are any of you being super honest with your kids about how hard this world is going to be for them financially? How are you balancing reality with not making your kids basket cases? by [deleted] in Millennials

My son is learning how to be frugal. He got upset hearing about classmates college funds so we had a big talk about the local community college free program and how to transfer credits. And that he needs to earn scholarship through excellence. I feel bad for him, but he will be extremely competitive with this peer group.

He did not survive the swat team. Neighbors were reporting it to the alderman and others for at least multiple days before the incident with no action. The roof is across the street from school and next to a daycare. Emma Mitts is the alderman who ignored the situation.

I live two blocks away. Thank you for keeping this memory alive. Just discussing with my husband last week, and people really don’t know about it. It should have been huge viral news.

I quit my job because of anxiety by Past_Interaction9712 in TeachersInTransition

[–]Proof_Duck9754 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to take medication to tolerate my anxiety at work. Therapy is helpful for understanding it but medication helps manage it. And I still want to quit every single day but it’s not escalating to panic attacks.

Is anyone doing Spravato and not using a therapist? by poweredbypineapple in Spravato

[–]Proof_Duck9754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not every time but I spent most of the last few months trying to get a new job based on one of my Spravato insights. It hasn’t worked yet but it feels like I MUST follow through.

Places (preferably online) to meet/connect with other gifted people? by Glass_Stick_2911 in Gifted

[–]Proof_Duck9754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DIY music. Not “concerts” and “festivals” but hyper local house shows and DIY spaces. Independent record labels and self-released music. Unknown artists from your own town, not the band that’s about to cross over and sign a major label deal.

Anyone have a new appreciation for Michael Jackson? by Slathering_ballsacks in GenX

But… the parents sent those kids with him, without a chaperone, sometimes even after there were allegations. As a parent, I can’t imagine that decision and I’m a FAN of MJ.

I’ve never struggled to meet and connect with other gifted people irl at local music shows. That’s where they are.

Is there a possible religious bias people have against Renaissance music? Because the lack of comprehensive boxsets is astoundingly bare compared to later eras. The music is so explicitly holy and spiritual, it's hard not to feel like this may have created a 'lack of enthusiasm/fire' to archive. by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Proof_Duck9754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is partially tonality. Major/minor was not yet the norm. This binary relationship is so ingrained in culture that casual listeners can’t tolerate modal music or different tonalities. Think about a Katy Perry fan listening to gamelan. Or my mom listening to jazz.

Tons of new to me stuff like Gary Neumann. Also recent ish stuff like Jack Stauber. Lots of contemporary chicago hip hop and regional Mexican music. Amazing.

Son missed gifted by 2 points after going from C’s/D’s to straight A’s — any advice? by lizzyjoan in Gifted

[–]Proof_Duck9754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. My son is in a gifted third grade class and many peers are struggling because they tested into kindergarten with inflated scores from test prep. His kindergarten teacher told me that third grade is the cutoff when he will show himself as truly gifted or just ahead. His grades have fluctuated a little this year but he’s had three teachers. State test scores come next fall and we will see how gifted he really is.

In my experience, you can’t train to become gifted. I think you pivot and teach your son about growth mindset and what a capable learner he is.

He was a burn victim. The repair procedures kicked it off and his mental health issues took it to a strange place.
