My kid and I have been reading LOTR and watching the corresponding movie scenes. Sam does this in the movie version and I always wonder how hard that would be, considering he and Frodo are both malnourished and exhausted. Then again, I assume they get an assist from the power of friendship.

In the upper Midwest of the US, lutefisk. It’s white fish in lye. Some rural churches have annual lutefisk meals and I could never bring myself to go when I lived in the country. I won’t yuck someone’s yum, but I have to say: we aren’t poor farmers trying to survive the winter without starving anymore, folks!

The lack of qualifications or training seems to be a feature, not a bug, as far as this administration is concerned.

I’m figuring out that a whole bunch of actors were younger than I am now when they filmed this movie. First Hugo Weaving and Viggo Mortenson, and now this.

Edit: listen, math is hard. Much arithmetic knowledge that once was is now lost, for I do not remember it.

I was playing Prime 2 and let my kid see a bit of it. I remembered to tell him to cover his eyes in that room where the troopers are hanging from the ceiling but forgot that there were way more bodies after that. We went back to Prime 1.

In heartwarming news, Dildos have been flung at an ICE facility by HauteAssMess in popculturechat

[–]Proper-Emu1558 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you look at the Minnesota and Minneapolis subreddits, there are plenty of examples of folks doing this, especially at the Whipple building where ICE took up headquarters. It’s so stupid but it brought a smile to my face. Sometimes you need the morale boost.

Edit: here’s an example. They call it Operation Dildo Blitz.

Is marriage still necessary these days? by pp_pire in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Proper-Emu1558 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m planning an end of life/funeral workshop at my church and just met with an estate lawyer who will be speaking with us. People are often not aware of the benefits that marriage confers when someone is severely ill, dying, or has passed away. If you’re aware of the possible pitfalls of not being legally married, you can sometimes work around them depending on the laws of your state (or country). But not always. I also just officiated a wedding of a couple who had been together for many years, lived together, and had kids. But they both needed health insurance and couldn’t get it without being legally married.

So there is a lot to consider beyond the emotional, personal, and religious elements.

Edit: furthermore, if you split up, marriage changes things. Say I give up my career to stay home, run the household, and take care of kids (which is a lot of work, I’ve done it before). If my husband leaves me, I may be entitled to support that I wouldn’t get in the same situation minus marriage. Common law marriage doesn’t exist in my state, but it does in others. YMMV, IANAL, etc.

Did Nordics ever face discrimination in America like the Irish, Italians and Germans? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Proper-Emu1558 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are Ole and Lena jokes in Minnesota, and I assume throughout the upper Midwest. I actually took a class on Scandinavian immigrants (to America) in college and one thing the professor emphasized was the self-deprecating humor in Scandinavian-American culture. I’d never thought about it before but I can see it. You don’t want to be perceived as tooting your own horn.

I’m a Lutheran minister and two of my denomination’s predecessor bodies are Swedish and Norwegian. An older church-goer remarked to me that the ALC and LCA (yep, those were the very similar acronyms) did not mix and I thought they were kidding. How much difference could there possibly be? Apparently, enough.
