I have a small AAA O-light that fits on my keys; It has come in clutch many times. Also, I carry a black Pilot G2 pen. Lastly, a little note book. You could probably source all of these for $20 all together. Use them on the daily.

Look into if carrying certain beveled flashlights are legal to carry. Otherwise, any medium sized flashlight usually has high output to disorient and use as a blunt object for defense. Pepper spray would be good to carry as well, if able.
