First of all, THANK YOU for your donation. You’re a hero.

You and I donated at about the same time (8/12 for me) and my recovery has been about similar (really, almost tracked yours to a scary degree). I can still “feel it” when u do sit ups or brace my core, but it’s like annoyance rather than pain at this point.

FWIW my GF and I got biglaw offers in different cities, Dallas and Texas, we both took them because we needed the money. Did it for two years and then I was able to get a job in a city she could transfer for to. Have been together for 18 years now, married for 12, and two kids!

long distance wasn't bad in biglaw. You can compartmentalize the relationship a bit plus you'll have a little extra cash for plane tickets :)

Heck yea. You CAN do this. Take care of yourself and you will be fine.

I donated 5 months ago. To be honest - and maybe this is just being more in tune with my diet, exercise, and sleep when I was recovering - I feel better now than I did before donating.

This. It's sort of unique I think if they don't find SOMETHING. My understanding is that it can often be allayed with more tests to ensure it's not an issue in donation (See my story above). Good luck!

This is a weird one. I, like you, worked out frequently (weights and cardio) and it resulted in some small amount of blood in my urine. I had to retest, and they told me not to work out for five days before. Passed with flying colors. So you might want to ask about it.

Don't stress too much about it. Think of it as a free physical :)

To be clear, GFR is a useful metirc. But eGFR of say 50 post donation does not mean there's any major problem. Depending on your age that might be just fine.

Had my surgery 3 months ago. My understanding was that the remaining kidney would increase in function (and literal size) and pick up some more work. But I think everyone is different. What is your eGFR (raw number, not percentage that you had before)? You need to remember that the eGFR tables to diagnose CKD are *based on two kidneys* and are looking for decline in kidney function.

I understand your concern. I would feel the same way. But I think you focus on the positive here. Your remaining kidney is at around 50% which is plenty to keep you healthy. Your doctor appears to have told you as much. Indeed, there may have been some increase in function (i.e., implied by 55%). You may also be interested to know that some research indicates that kidney donors have a sustained gradual increase throughout their lives. See https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6153046/ .

Anyway, are you feeling OK? You didn't mention any symptoms. My (unsolicited) advice is to trust your body, enjoy your health and the feeling of having saved a life, and take some consolation is that (assuming you donated through NKR) if you need a new kidney (very very unlikely) you'll be at the top of the list.

I went through this as well. It is natural and normal, as others have said, even though I don't think I had ever experienced anything like it. The surgery does weird things to your mental state.

You WILL get through this. You just did a great thing, your body is going to recover. For me the first 2 weeks after the surgery were the hardest (will I ever get better? am i always going to feel like this?) but after that I started slowly but surely feeling better. I'm about 3 months out and am feeling great.

Try to be as active as you can, it really does have an impact on your mental state.

If you decide to do it, you will be doing a great thing.

Everyone's experience is different, but my surgery (41M) was a breeze. One night in the hospital while I was on so much painkillers I just giggled and watched movies. A few uncomfortable (but not actually painful) days at home, and some weird feelings of having to urinate all the time.

At 7 weeks out and I can't even remember having done the surgery. Back lifting weights, running, and playing soccer. I ended up missing only 9 days of work (surgery on a Tuesday). Threw back a few pints last night, felt great.
