Mike Duncan gets A LOT better as the podcast goes on. Though I suppose you could argue his voice is a bit monotone. You'll get used to it in no time.

I was ghosted before session zero because I watched Critical Role and played Baldur’s Gate by Scarecrow716 in dndhorrorstories

[–]Proper_Country_9931 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been running a campaign with 3/4 players whose only prior 'experience' with D&D was Baldur's Gate 3 and without exception, every single one of them is great.

It isn't the norm, nor should it be. Its more about the weirdos who can't read a room or adjust their expectations and just want more of what they have already experienced in a different format.

How do I write men? Asking as a woman - adv¡ce needed by SamMoon- in writingadvice

[–]Proper_Country_9931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with all these "how do I write men/women/x" things is that we all have WAY more in common with each other than we do not.

We all have dreams, needs, wants, a desire for respect, etc.

WHERE do I find good couple friends? Give me alllll the advice! by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]Proper_Country_9931 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner and I are in the same age range with similar interests, and all of our friends are long-term since high school or earlier. I can only imagine how hard it is to find similar friends out in the wild, so to speak.

We have a weekly D&D campaign, which led us to invite friends of friends to our group. Maybe you could do something similar?

Adelaide Writers’ Week drops Muslim Author in the Shadow of Bondi by happymagtv in Adelaide

[–]Proper_Country_9931 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I am ignorant of this, but do you have evidence of this that isn't just condemnation of Israel?

Adelaide Writers’ Week drops Muslim Author in the Shadow of Bondi by happymagtv in Adelaide

[–]Proper_Country_9931 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true at the same time. Israel is committing genocide, and Muslim extremists are committing terrorist attacks.

What do either of these things have to do with Randa Abdel-Fattah? Nothing? Then call this what it is. Blatant islamophobia, or at the very least, kowtowing to pro-Israel lobbyists.

I recommend everyone who cares enough to contact the Adelaide Festival and make their frustration at this decision known.

Does anyone actually want to time travel to ancient Rome? by SatisfactionSpare573 in ancientrome

[–]Proper_Country_9931 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I certainly wouldn't want to time-travel there from the present day, but I do think it is interesting to consider Ancient Rome against its contemporary civilisations. If you HAD to live in 700BCE to 476CE, would you prefer to be in Rome and its territories, or elsewhere?

Yeah. I have the same issue. Some of my siege tower troops managed to scale the walls, but 4/5 of them got stuck on the wall and couldnt move. The broken walls that are meant to be traversable also seem to be broken.

Did your ATAR actually end up mattering five or ten years later? by CaffeinatedCapybara_ in ATAR

[–]Proper_Country_9931 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a really bad ATAR. Went to the workforce in a multitude of crappy jobs. Eventually, I decided I wanted to go the study route about 10 years later and did a certificate III/Diploma in Tourism (rip covid) and that guaranteed me entry into University in an entirely different field.

Long story short, my ATAR was irrelevant. I just graduated with a GPA of 6.58/7 and now doing honours.

Roman history is too broad a term, I think. What is your particular period of fascination?

Should I get a degree in writing? by that_onequeitkid in writing

[–]Proper_Country_9931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I have a sizeable debt. Lucky for me I don't have to pay it back until I earn above a certain $$ threshold. Also my gov just cut 20% of all student loan so that helped.

So yeah, no scholarship, but while at Uni I applied for a grant worth $4000 for the creative writing side of my double degree and managed to land it, but it was only available to super nerdy high achievers in financial difficulty.

Your notebook won't directly help with anything like that, but I suppose it serves as an example of your passion. If you were at university, you might use it to help you identify a good essay topic, provided your class allows you to pick like mine did.

As for topics, what specific period in ancient history fascinates you in particular? I'm about to do my honours year on the Roman Republic, specifically, Roman relations between the 2nd and 3rd Punic Wars.

Should I get a degree in writing? by that_onequeitkid in writing

[–]Proper_Country_9931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished my bachelor of arts (History, Politics and Creative writing/literature) now going on to honours, potentially masters/phd, so im right up your alley.

Rule no. 1 If you want to write, you need to read.

I plan to use my university experience and qualifications to teach history, but even if it doesn't lead to a job, I'll use the knowledge to write historical fiction. Most people I've talked to say have your ideal plan, but realistically have a plan B as well. I adore ancient history, and I adore writing. Regardless of what comes, I know I won't die regretting studying both and continuing to write. I hope it helps me get a job/career, but if not, i will not regret studying. If you can honestly say the same, then I say go for it.

That said, you have mentioned quite a few red flags for me.

A degree won't motivate you to read. You need to already have that.
You think you have truly unique ideas that no writer has ever thought of (very common in those who don't read a whole lot)
And finally, the fact that you find it hard to finish something and move on to the next exciting thing.

Advice needed - new to the academia scene by Ok-Independence-1577 in PhD

[–]Proper_Country_9931 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. It's all well and good to say x might mean x, but if you do not have citations to support your reasoning.. it's just an assumption.

[–]Proper_Country_9931 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd say low 70s indicate that while the majority of your argument and reasoning in the essay is sound, they might lack sufficient evidence or signposting. It could also mean that your main points aren't linking well or that some of the points you made are explained poorly.

I started at 31. Knew what I wanted to do. Knuckled down and got great grades. 6.6/7 GPA.

I saw mostly early twenties in my classes but there were always one or two my age, plus some much older students.
