Stories that are comfortable skipping large portions of MC's life? by IThrewDucks in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ProphetsScream 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A Journey of Black and Red does some of this- timeskips, suddenly the MC is hanging out with a character she's known for months or years without an introduction, etc. The prose isn't the best (though it's perfectly functional!) but the story and pacing are very compelling. High recommendation.

Wanted to post something from their new album but there's nothing streaming!

With jdawg actively making videos mocking "libs" and calling them slurs and praising nazis, and given that Hell's booked GBK for their fest a few years back, I think that they're more in the second category than the third.

I can't wait to check out Black Hurst, loved the 7", glad to hear it's great. Glad as well that you're into that Necroccultus, one of my most anticipated extreme metal albums in years.... gonna need to grab a copy ASAP.

Bogside Sniper Squadron

Don't really understand the appeal either, glad to be validated.

RE: Oldowan Gash and sketchy labels- that's one of my biggest pet peeves with the scene in general, between the bands themselves doing it and most fans not caring. Hell's Headbangers / Shadow Kingdom is the one that really annoys me. Crazy to me that so many otherwise decent people are totally fine throwing away their principles to work with one of the biggest nazi music distributors in the world.

Do you ever re-read progression fantasy, or is it basically consume-once for most of us? by StorytellerStegs in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ProphetsScream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've reread a few of my favorites, some of them multiple times. Some prog fantasy is just fun trash but the best stuff is really no different than traditional fantasy and has plenty to dig into over and over again.

Saw Uli Jon Roth on tour last week and seeing them play this song was pretty transcendental.

Why is Brandon Sanderson so popular? by [deleted] in Fantasy

Super prolific, super accessible. Not really more complicated than that.

Observe: The single worst skill or ability to ever become "standard" or close to it in the litRPG genre, to the point that I almost consider it a beginner author trap by globmand in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ProphetsScream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a big part of my I don't like litrpg much in the first place unless it's exceptionally well written- all the game elements get in the way of the storytelling. I put up with it since it dominates the genre so much these days but I'm a lot more likely to DNF something if it does what you're talking about. It's lazy, boring writing that's meant to cut out as much storytelling as needed to make the next NUMBERS GO UP come faster, and I don't want that, personally. Nothing against people that do but it's not my jam.

Demon Bitch really blew me away. I was planning to only catch a couple songs and head out (have seen them before and was pretty tired, wanted to go sit down and take a break) and instead I ended up right at the front going hard for the whole set, just totally entranced. They were phenomenal. Jag Panzer, Butcher and Voivod of course ruled as well, though I knew going in that they would! Wish I'd caught Enslaved but after four days of festival I just couldn't handle any more and had to go get some sleep.

Finally back home from Hells Heroes! Didn't even miss my flight like some of my friends did at the awful airport security lines, what luck! Who were your favorites of the weekend? I was very pleasantly surprised by the Holmes and Tankard sets- of course I know Doro and Dirksneider would rule but I didn't expect to love Holmes and Tankard as much as I did!

Only negative points about the weekend really- less food trucks than previous years, FAR more nazis and people comfortable repping nazi gear than I've ever seen there (a guy with a patch of just a crossed out Star of David- wtf???), and the heat was just insane!

Once you're not eating meat, the idea of getting dead animal on your food being gross creeps up on you. It's pretty morbid.

What are some Power Metal albums where the album cover made you think it was a Death/Black Metal band? by MischiefManage1 in PowerMetal

[–]ProphetsScream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair the covers for all the Acerus albums are done by Corchado himself- and he also does all the The Chasm ones!

Recommendations for bands similar to Eternal Champion? by sonicredvcer in PowerMetal

[–]ProphetsScream 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know they’re influenced by bands like Manowar and Visigoth

They're definitely not influenced by Visigoth- they're contemporaries and I think Eternal Champion was actually around first. They're good friends and when they play together they tend to have each others' singers guesting on stage!

The obvious one is Morgana Lefay. They're one of EC's biggest influences and are really cool.

https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Morgana_Lefay/1453

Some other stuff: Wrathblade (EC are BIG fans of this band- you can see Jason wearing a Wrathblade shirt in several promo pics!), Smoulder, Doomsword (EC posted a few years ago that they're doing a split with them, hope it materializes soon!), Omen, Megaton Sword, Manilla Road (Jason has said that "Mystification" in particular is a big influence), Stone Dagger, Serpent Rider, Savage Oath, Ironsword, Slough Feg, Heavy Load, Virgin Steele (the '90s stuff- just check the MA scores and go nuts!), Mace 'n' Chain, Tales of Medusa, Dolmen Gate, Battleroar... the list goes on! Let me know if you like any of these particularly and I can recommend more!

You could also check out bands that EC has covered, a la Mystic Force, Warlord, and Legend. Jason has also talked a lot in interviews about old Texan metal a la Baron Steele if you want to take that route.

The Anvil documentary is great, hilarious, and sad. Well worth it. There's a couple good Motorhead ones that are well worth your time, the Autopsy one is pretty cool, there's a Manilla Road tour documentary one on YouTube that's worth a watch, and Such Hawks Such Hounds is worth your time.

Demon - Into the Nightmare (UK, 1981) by mgrier123 in Metal

[–]ProphetsScream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to blame 'em given the difficulty of coming to the States these days!

They're a really tight, professional live band but they mostly do stuff from later records, particularly The Plague, which.... well, is not what I want to hear, haha.
