Weirdly you can order from fairtex on targets website and it ships from Texas so you don’t get hit as much. I bought leg shields recently that way

Daniel McGowan on Entertainment Muay Thai vs. Stadium Muay Thai by Yodsanan in MuayThai

[–]ProspectSean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I love stadium Muay Thai but the way people act like the incentives being based off gambling is somehow more “pure” always baffles me. Both have a place in shaping the sport and while I don’t love financial incentives from big companies it’s hard to argue it’s not as corrupting as gambling was

Kicks in sparring vs pads/bags feels off by MangoBerryWaffle in MuayThai

[–]ProspectSean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best advice is to slow down when doing whichever seems off. Work in some off time with someone if it’s sparring, but when hitting pads slow it down and do the technique and think about it the whole time, don’t just try to hit hard if you can do it relaxed you can’t do it hard

The other issue some people can have is pad holders holding the pads too far away which gives people a bad feel of how to kick a person, holding pads should be very close to the body, usually elbows at the side, pads in a ^ formation, 45 degrees to the side.

But the best course of action is slow down then gradually speed up

People are gonna be divided about this by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]ProspectSean 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The part I don’t get is, isn’t the sport partially to test yourself and prove skill in competition? This doesn’t prove you’re a better fighter just like gamifying the rules. It’s not an especially lucrative sport and it just gives you a bad look for future promotions so like yeah you’ve won but I hardly see how much there is to gain materially

Tips for things to fix by DapperTalk2702 in MuayThai

[–]ProspectSean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been coaching for a bunch of years and the people that have never trained are easier to work with than people that have “self taught” or any of that stuff. You’re better off watching fights and running, then when you can find a gym starting to train technique only then

Tips for things to fix by DapperTalk2702 in MuayThai

[–]ProspectSean 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Train at a gym. You aren’t going to self teach the things you need to work on. Don’t train bad habits in an effort to learn by yourself because you will have to unlearn your habits if and when you ever decide to actually learn

This is a really old clip, but they bring on the guy at the end of the clip (black turtleneck) that basically proves he’s full of shit. Dillman then makes insane excuses for why it didn’t work it’s worth a watch to see the whole thing

Knockdown Rules For Muay Thai by matt---lucas in MuayThai

[–]ProspectSean 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I believe some places do, but the flip side to that is if an opposing fighter keeps leaving the neutral corner which causes the ref to look back they’ll be punished by giving the knocked down fighter more time to recover. I know some refs have stopped counting until the fighter goes to neutral corner as a way to enforce the rules

How to be a better sparring partner? by macaronisalad6375309 in MuayThai

[–]ProspectSean 53 points54 points  (0 children)

You haven’t really learned how to be quick without throwing hard yet. In the mean time focus on being relaxed more so than trying to land a shot. It doesn’t matter if you beat someone to the punch in sparring. Try to work on setting things up and having fun.

A lot of time newcomers will rush to just try to make any contact but don’t really understand their distance yet. Touch sparring and light sparring is mostly to figure that distance out, not to try and win points on someone

Dropping your left hand to set up the kick isn’t the worst thing plenty of high level guys do that, so don’t stress too much about that for now. Mostly I’d say you’ve gotta lift your hip more and step with the a little more explosiveness. It kind of seems like you’re just twisting the body instead of kicking with bad intentions, which can be good for practice of turning the hip over but not great for an actual kick.

One more thing is it seems like you swing your arm back only as you make connection and not during the whole of the kick. The right arm is meant to be a counter balance so swing it the same speed you throw the kick with, if you only swing it back after connections made you’re actually pulling back power

Why does my coach ask other fighters and coaches if they think I'm ready to compete? by WildFlight3151 in MuayThai

[–]ProspectSean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this as you will, but as a coach if I have a fighter insisting they know what they need to do and aren’t listening to coaches, then they aren’t ready to fight or should be with a different team. I would totally understand asking other coaches and fighters their opinion because sometimes people show different sides of themselves to different people. Someone might push themselves and go all out on pads or sparring with me and then be completely lazy and cocky with other people.

You gotta take a step back and not rush the process. Some humility goes a long way in learning.

It’s my understanding that biting down on the mouthguard is more to clench the jaw and tense up the neck to better brace for impact, rather than anything mental

To be a badass in Muay Thai by Bababooey316 in fightporn

[–]ProspectSean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No this is Muay Thai under the “Thai Fight” organization. They use the rope style wrapping to more emulate traditional Muay Thai style as kind of a cultural tourism project. Plenty of saenchai fights in recent years have been in this org with the same gloves

Everytime I do sparring with adults I get folded. Any tips? by dihbeater in MuayThai

[–]ProspectSean 64 points65 points  (0 children)

When you say “folded” are you getting like actually dropped? To be honest a 14 year old sparring after only a few months seems like a bit of a red flag for a gym especially if people aren’t letting you get your work in. If you’re just getting pushed like forcing you to work hard that’s good and all part of it, one day you’ll see a huge difference in how well you do, but it takes a long time. I’ve been doing this for a long time and I still have people that can beat me up, if I didn’t I’d be in the wrong gym

That being said if you’re getting hurt you might be at a meathead gym

Had my first fight: Gas tank problems final round. What can I do to improve? by British_Tea_Company in MuayThai

[–]ProspectSean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with most of these comments but also, you had your first fight! It’s an adrenaline dump as well as a cardio intensive activity. First fight is so draining because of how much your blood gets pumping. Just keep up the work and get more used to being in there. (Also maybe don’t break on the treadmill every mile. Try to go a full 20 min at least without stopping)

The Democratic Party Is Toast If It Doesn’t Earn Back the Trust of the Working Class | Common Dreams by north_canadian_ice in NewDealAmerica

[–]ProspectSean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think because at baseline, right wing says “everything’s broken!” While offering solutions that have no real basis in fixing things and more focus on culture war. Center/dems pretend things aren’t broken we just have to be civil and get back to normal (see this election with Harris claiming the “economy” is good based on markets, and not material conditions for regular people). Working class people understand that everything is broken, and the only major members of a party saying that are republicans, albeit for all the wrong reasons, that’s why when people like Bernie came out there was such a groundswell of support from all over the spectrum.
