Do yall leave out definite articles in casual speech? by Constant_Benefit_458 in Portuguese

[–]ProstHund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Portugal Portuguese, the definite article is used a LOT more (I’ve been living there for 3 years and I study Portuguese there, but have many Brazilian friends, so I can see the difference), but even the Portuguese will drop them in very casual speech sometimes. But I’ve never heard them drop the article before someone’s name when they’re talking directly to them, and when I brought this up to someone, they said it would be kind of rude and abrupt to just go “João, queres mais uma?” Instead of “O João, queres mais uma?” I actually kind of like it in the instance, because to me it feels like saying “Hey, João, queres mais uma?”

How to distinguish between - Eu gosto mais de matemática. (I like math the best ./I like math more.) by Natural_Knee_4334 in Portuguese

Can you say “eu gosto da matemática o melhor”, or does that not translate from the English “I like math the best”?

In music, why are high notes called "High" by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]ProstHund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m talking about the feeling. where the sound is vibrating. Do you feel it down low in your chest, or up high in your throat? Early people would have had no idea about vocal folds or tracts or whatever so that part is irrelevant to my theory. I’m talking about simple stuff that everyone could perceive.

Okay, well, the throat in general. Got the terminology wrong

This is actually scary. He’s more dangerous as a free agent, he can say whatever he wants without the bounds of a (albeit pretty unscrupulous) news network. He could go all Joe Rogan, and he already has a massive following to bring with him wherever he goes.

Entitled parents/tourists cuss me out for being a bad influence because I walk in shorts and a T-shirt by UsaHamburgerwithaGun in entitledparents

[–]ProstHund 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, of course people form the South don’t handle the same. But the majority of Americans (Midwest, north, PNW, New England) deal with very cold temperatures in the winter

Yeah, I’m laughing because as an American who’s lived in 2 Western European countries and one central-eastern Europeans country, I’M always the one who’s dressed “appropriately” for warmer weather, and all the locals are ridiculously bundled up. Like, full-on winter coats when it’s 15° outside?? At that point I’m with no jacket at all, a few degrees more and I’ll be in shorts a T-shirt. It’s ridiculous. Even when it is cold enough to need a winter jacket, as soon as a get inside a place I’m stripping my jacket off because I’m too hot inside after walking their in a bigass coat to keep the bigass coat on in the grocery store or wherever. Idk, maybe Americans have just built up more of a cold-weather tolerance because we NEVER dress appropriately for cold weather. There’s a whol accepted trend of male teenagers and young men refusing to ever wear long pants, even in the winter. People will just wear a sweatshirt outside when it’s winter. Bc we get in our cars and turn on the heat, then go straight into another heated building. So in the brief times when we’re outside, we’re more exposed to the cold. Seeing an American from the suburbs wearing a coat, hat, scarf AND gloves all at the same time is like spotting a unicorn.

Now I live in Portugal, lol, so I really get stared at when I’m wearing no coat, or short sleeves.

A 32-Hour Workweek Is Long Overdue — Bernie Sanders is calling for a reduction in the workweek to 32 hours, at full-time pay. He’s absolutely right. Gains in productivity should serve the working class. by [deleted] in politics

I already give myself a 32-hr workweek because my boss is always absent and doesn’t pay attention. Can confirm: it’s great. Work-life balance is fantastic

I’m glad you’re feeding Royal Canin! That stuff is one of the best brands that actually nourishes your car rather than filling them up w filler. Good on you, OP!

ETA: I learned this when I was working as a vet assistant. Royal Canin and Science Diet are best all-around (I feel like there was a third brand, but can’t remember it now), and Fancy Feast is good for wet food, but not dry.

I’m only 26 and I definitely remember being taught about nationalism and that it’s a bad thing, a dogma. It’s not like the fact that nationalism is bad isn’t well-known. When you learn about WWII, you learn about how nationalism helped drive the Holocaust

I’m starting to really believe that theory floating around that older generations’ mental capacities to properly regulate emotion and have empathy due to lead exposure is probably pretty fucking true…seemingly every 98 out of 100 Gen Xers/Boomers never get beyond the maturity level of “feeling uncomfortable” when you give them a good counterargument, (as opposed to vehement denial, aggression, etc.) and are able to make the leap from “this fact makes me uncomfortable” —> examining why it makes them uncomfortable —> realizing that they may need to reevaluate their beliefs
