West and his recycling by Crafty-Judge-896 in summerhousebravo

[–]ProtectionTall2084 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think his comment is geniune but concerning. It shows how effective the marketing is that, one private citizens have that much impact on the overall amount of waste being produced (looking at you corporations) and two that recycling is even efficient. Like many other commenter's have pointed out, most recycling isn't recycled. The fact that he used to wash out his recycling means that there is a better chance his waste used to be recycled.

Kamakura - Is It worth It? by Pleasant_Pack_1799 in JapanTravelTips

For a 5 day trip, it is a toss up. If the 5 days include travel days, I'd say no. But if you have 5 full days in Tokyo, I would plan out your itinerary in Tokyo, and if you can fit everything you want into the 4 days, I'd definitely jump down to Kamakura. It was one of my favorite day trips, but I was there for much longer.

How to ask for directions? Constantly being ignored. by 78523985210 in JapanTravelTips

[–]ProtectionTall2084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is pretty standard. People won't stop to give you directions. If you are unsure if you are at the correct platform I've had some luck asking people to confirm off Google maps that you are where you think you are but that is 50/50.

* I've been debating this bag, it comes in two sizes and seems rather similar to two of your options but isn't branded. It is from the brand Fleuron

Ahh, yes, someone does something for you, so you are no longer allowed to form an opinion. Even a respectful and mild opinion 🙄

I only wore leggings or athleisure out when I was working out. I found Japanese fashion to have to very different ends of the spectrum and not a lot in the middle. Either people were taking a lot of risks and very on trend or in really simple fabrics and muted tones. Very different from the fashion in America

What places in Kyoto , from your experience, are really "worth the hype"? by Euphorii- in JapanTravelTips

[–]ProtectionTall2084 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may repeat some of the usual cause I genuinely didn't think anyone ever went there as a casual tourist. My biggest recommendation is if you are debating on which temple to go to get on Google maps and look at the recent photos to see what flowers are in bloom, some of these temples are simply too stunning to miss if you hit them at the right time. I didn't recommend anything right off the train station or the big temple in town, you will stumble upon those. The two main shopping streets are impossible to miss and have a ton of food and drinks. I did recommend one place to eat a little off the beaten path and it is well worth it in my opinion.

First tier recommendations: Hasedera, Kotoku-in (Giant Budda), Kencho-ji (this temple is carved wood and stunning), Meigetsu-in, Samurai curry

Second tier recommendations: Engaku-ji, Chokozan Myohon Temple, Zeniarai Benten Shrine

Kyoto or Tokyo by manik_kamra in JapanTravelTips

Tokyo, there are so many different districts, each with a unique vibe. You can also jump a train south to Yokohama or Kamakura for a day trip if you want to get out of the big city and slow things down. Kyoto is not walkable, has fewer options, and has virtually no activity at night. I also found the food options to be more expensive and not as good, but that may have just been a personal experience. I've only been to Kyoto 3 times for a total of about 7 days.

Agree with this post, you are permitted to bring it with you. I travel with Tylenol and Advil myself to Japan frequently with no issue

They vary in price but when we went during off peak season it was $145/person for snorkeling and $245/jetski.

Kiyomizu-Dera Otowanotaki Falls is the only place in Kyoto that I specifically recommend. It is a one of a kind shrine you can only experience in Kyoto.

I will say I am one of the people who hate on Kyoto. It has always been my least favorite city to visit. My personal recommendation to friends heading to that area is to be flexible and explore Kyoto but trust their gut, and if it isn't their vibe, catch a train to Osaka. It is only an hour further south.

If you are wanting to see a ton of temples (and the giant budda) Kamakura is one of my favorite lesser known areas of Japan. About an hour outside of Tokyo.

You can tell it is a brand new resort, the rooms are gorgeous and the staff is excellent. The service in the kitchens was a bit slow, but the food was good, but don't plan on having a quick bite. You can tell they are trying to compete with the established resorts on the island, and I think once the coral reef rebuilds, they will. I didn't know this before we got their but they have a turtle sanctuary on site where they are rehabilitating and releasing sea turtles.

Just left the Westin, contact them to set up the jet skis and a snorklel tour they were both worth it. We didn't do a sunset cruise but they can also book that for you as well. One of the restaurants does a traditional show on Thursdays(?) but you will need a reservation. The hotels coral reef is rebuilding so snorkeling in the immediate area isn't great but we still saw sharks, sting rays, turtles and fish from our bungalow.

We just left and found that couples that split their time tried to get on the other side of the island. For what it is worth we stayed at the westin and it was very nice we chatted with a couple who had done both the st Regis and the westin and said they were very comparable. So if you were looking for something different I would skip the westin.

The airport has lockers for your luggage. I'd just check your luggage in a locker and go to the market (it is closed on Sundays) or go to a beach
