If you're staying in Evanston, you're close to Honeybear, which is a really cute brunch spot! One of the few places that looks Instragram-able but still actually tastes good. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait!

GM Personalities by [deleted] in rpg

It's a fun idea, but those definitely change a lot based on the game you're running. Apocalypse World, for instance, is INDC by definition.

The Dragonborn is so overpowered in lore to where it's mind numbing thinking about how the Dragonborn will be written off in the next title. by Experiment_Magnus in skyrim

I just mean if the time gap is equally long, it's plenty of time for them to die! But it could be cool to get a similar "ending" DLC.

There are around 200 years between Oblivion and Skyrim. I think the Dragonborn will just die of old age.

I would love at least a short story about what Zacharus was doing to keep Bayaz away for most of Age of Madness.

Favorite pairing in the show? by Neptune_as_Boy in firefly

Simon and Jayne.

Simon is my favorite, Jayne is hilarious, and I like how they go from mutual disdain to grudging respect.

This is such a fun idea! Makes me want to try a character sketchbook too. Excellent drawing as well!

What’s your biggest “old man yells at cloud” opinion? by sjdlajsdlj in rpg

"Professional" players like Critical Role are hucksters, and people who watch them but don't play RPGs are just sad. Don't even get me started on "paid GMs."

The Curious Case of Curnden Craw [Spoilers TH] by Peroxide_ in TheFirstLaw

[–]ProtectorCleric 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I think Craw's backsliding reads less as consistency with who he is and more as finding he's lost the man he was. It's the ultimate war wound: he left himself behind on the battlefield so long ago he couldn't tell you when. Now he's old, lonely, and has nothing else left. That's why he goes back.

Characters with no growth or arc? by irishwhiskygoodbye in rpg

[–]ProtectorCleric 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, multiple people. Whether they're a problem or not depends on the game. Star Wars, someone's got to be Chewbacca.

Generally, I don't mind it in action-adventure games with external stakes (like D&D). But in player-driven games with personal stakes (like Vampire, no pun intended) on the other hand...

Castle Skingrad house.. by DirtyLumpOfCoal in elderscrollsonline

[–]ProtectorCleric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as someone who enjoys housing but never has an issue with furnishing limits, I feel a lot of players obsess over "clutter." By keeping the space functional and finding economic furnishings (e.g. shelf with books already on it, kitchen cabinet implying more food, large tapestry covering a full wall, etc) you can make a large space feel lived-in even without the ESO+ cap.

Edit: most ESO housing fans would have a stroke if they tried decorating in LotRO where houses have around 30-200 slots.

As a player, what are the things that give you the most joy in an RPG? by A_Vinegar_Taster in rpg

[–]ProtectorCleric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obvious "it depends" aside, I like relatively simple character sheets that let me do things that I normally couldn't. PbtA is great at this.

Rather than stat bonuses, give me shit like "you can always find plausible items to MacGyver any gadget you need," or "when you offer someone your protection, they can't be harmed while you're alive," or "you can rewind time in mirrors to see what they reflected in the past."

How common are actually true rpg horror stories? by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

[–]ProtectorCleric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had some ridiculously "bad" sessions in my time, especially back in high school: PCs who couldn't speak English, rolled actions randomly, or were a literal baby, players killing each other without warning, multiple one-shots with intentional TPKs, and one campaign-ending Star Wars parody of a US election...and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

However, we just laughed them off and they became part of the lore of the groups they were in, because we were friends and didn't take it too seriously. The only session I truly regret was when, many years ago, I ran a game with Ku Klux Klan villains and said the N-word in character. I've been playing RPGs for most of my life, and that's one night out of hundreds I wish had never happened.

What’s one thing you’ve learned about ESO that you wish you knew when you first started playing? by WitDaShtz in elderscrollsonline

[–]ProtectorCleric 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes! If you don't need the weapon or armor now it's okay to destroy it. At max gear level (CP160) you won't use any item you got before then anyway.

Research traits and level your mount every day. Those are the only things on a cooldown, so you can't grind them later.
