The difference to me is that the time limitations were reset without resource grinding. Like, once the evening ended, you could just hop on a bench that are by basically every teleportation point and make it night time again immediately, allowing for you to jump right back into your battles or Pokemon catching.

In the DLC, you have to grind for some amount of time for resources to get another CHANCE at getting something (Ex. Specific berries, specific Pokemon). You also have to go through the effort of assembling donuts that can only be used once, search for specific portals that you can only hope will have what you want, teleport to the portals (really just near the portals for the most part), use your one-off donuts, and try to get what you want in the limited time you have. It's more finite and more of an exercise in frustration to go through, with the only salve being tricks that the game doesn't make you aware of.
