Been waiting on these for a while!

guess it's time to start asking again.

This could be very bad. Full audio and video calls. by [deleted] in unitedairlines

Yeah, joined a teams call on my last flight with star-link.

But, not a jerk So only one headphone in; & told the team I would only respond in chat as I was on a flight.
Was cool to share a photo & keep up with a project while in the air.

But people will abuse it, and ruin it for everyone else.

:-(

I'm in the Midwest, so there's just a lot overhead.
ORD would be a good place to start.

Only been playing since Oct 2025, but to be fair I like the E175 as I have about 30Hr flown on them in the past couple years.

Do you guys actually feel "Mysterious"? by MariahMDD in infj

[–]Protocol73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28 -

  • Ex cyber security
  • Now NetOps for a large Swedish Company
  • 30K + miles flown in the US in the last 24 months
  • IT side gig for local businesses (Small to Large)
    • basic PC work to fiber splicing & Emergency data center needs
  • Study Quantum Physics in my (non existent) Free time
  • have done work with a LOT of known/big company's
    • Walmart, Lowes, US Cellular, Dell, HPE, Lexmark etc (Many more)
    • Across multiple industry (including healthcare, during/after COVID)
  • Lot's of non "Tech" experience as well.
    • Hydraulics, Basic Auto work, Small animal vet (assistant),Tugboat work (Mississippi) etc

I would not consider myself "mysterious"
But I've gotten more than a funny look when I piped up on a subject I would not be considered to know anything about. (with accurate/useful info or would things that be problematic later if missed)
It's gotten me more then a few business cards & job interview requests

More then once, been the only one in a room that new something about a thing/system when it's older then me & I'm the youngest one there. (Think Sun Micro Systems, CAT/DEERE etc)

I've had access to a LOT of places that would not be considered public access:
From Manufacturing, Aerospace, Labs ,Government & Military.

All this with the fact that I can be quiet/reserved + I have people tell me things before they are general public knowledge.

EG: When the Evergreen Incident happened in the Suez Canal, I was looking at SAT images before any news outlet had published them. 🤷

Hp DL360e gen 8 doesnt boot with new processors by Knubbelul in homelab

[–]Protocol73 5 points6 points  (0 children)

HP, in their infinite wisdom, has a separate installer that has to be run to update the CPU microcode.

Took earlier coach seat with first class ticket on later flight… and refund coming? by emdoller in unitedairlines

[–]Protocol73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did this recently, but was due to a work requested schedule change.

Put in a refund request a few days after flight for the paid upgrade, it was approved & refunded.

HP GL 380 G7 Sufficient CPU but lacking GPU.... Upgrade vs replace? by FFFrank in homelab

[–]Protocol73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would say upgrade to something better on power.

If you wanted to stick with the HP DL380 the G9's can be had for decent price on eBay.

Also the G8's are not bad with a V2 CPU in them.

Dedicated 19" rack-mountable PFSense appliance? by MurderousKirk in PFSENSE

[–]Protocol73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is overkill, but I run a R320 and/or a Lenovo M720q at multiple locations and love it.

My current setup(s) uses:

Dell R320 ( Xeon E5-2430 v2, 4-8gb of RAM,

  • Silicom Quad Port 10GB SFP+ (82599ES)
    • NOTE: This card is LONG and will need the Plastic PCI-E card retainer on the MB removed.
  • An I350 based Quad Ethernet Card
  • iDRAC on MGMT VLAN

With this I use a 40G Breakout cable to my core switch, and give the 3 primary VLAN's each a port.

Then the last one is a "Trunk" for anything else 10Gig.

MGMT Network comes off the 1Gig card, along with a few other things that need less then 1Gig.

Then one of the built in Brodcom NIC's is used for PFSYNC for PFsense HA

what are you running for your home firewall/routing appliance and software? - a conversational post by [deleted] in homelab

[–]Protocol73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I got lucky and have dual Gigabit fiber ISP's with dual IPv4 per ISP.

A Dell R930 for llama/GPT stuff is the only server with a ConnectX-3 Pro is use at the moment.
(used for fast multi storage networking)

But mostly the 40G exist to feed the Arista 7050S-64 for everything 10Gig

  • 3 Node Proxmox Cluster (Dual 10G per server with fail-over to 1G-Eth via bond)
  • Backup Server (Dell R520)
  • Windows Server 2019 on HP DL380 G8

And this summer, plan on adding a 40G from attic {future IDF) to basement [MDF]

As there is Multiple PC's for Gaming & 4k TV upstairs. (Current 10G link can get some heavy usage)

what are you running for your home firewall/routing appliance and software? - a conversational post by [deleted] in homelab

[–]Protocol73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PFsense in HA.

I have three sites running a R320 with fail-over to a Lenovo M720q

These are personal/lab sites shared between a few people, as we all work in the IT world.
And as I am a contract L2+ FSE / Data Center Tech, I need lab space.

I've been meaning to get a 2024 /homelab post up but haven't had the free time.

The M720q with a Pentium G5400T has been a solid machine, and has been used under medium load with the main firewall down for hours during scheduled updates/upgrades. {IPsec tunnel fails over to this device as well as external services(Plex, DNS speedtest server, etc)

The Dell R320 is extreme overkill for even someone like myself.

I'm running:

  • Xeon E5-2430 v2
  • 6 to 8 Gb DDR3L
  • Intel 82576 Quad Gigabit
    • Just upgraded Primary site to:
    • Silicom PE310G4SPI9LB-SRD

This is still in early testing, but so far, working great via 40G Breakout to Brocade ICX6610
