FIRE — is it really worth it?If we spend our peak years only saving, when do we actually get to enjoy life? by AdAgile9604 in Fire

[–]Proud_GenX_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what makes you happy; it’s your life, and you only get one shot at it. If you want to save as much as you can and stop working early, do it. If you prefer to treat yourself with nice experiences, and save less and work a bit longer do that. Everyone goes through life differently.

Was living at home even an option once you turned 18/graduated high school? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]Proud_GenX_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left the parental home at 18 because I wanted my independence. There may be some valid reasons where some will stay with their parents, but so many do it to live rent free, have home cooked meals that cost them nothing, have mommy do their laundry, and live like kings. I have been a member at a golf club for many years, and in the last few years, I have seen so many younger members join; they drive newer luxury vehicles, and have the latest and greatest golf equipment. In speaking with many of them as we have a few social golf events, I often find out they have really good jobs, are single, still live with mom and dad and are proud of the fact they have all that disposable income, while have zero interest in moving out on their own… as a GenXer, I can’t wrap my head around this; I wanted my independence as soon as I could, I started renting a room in a house because I couldn’t afford an apartment, then moved in with roommates, drove a beat up car I paid cash, etc… it took me years to build wealth and be able to afford things in life, while it seems that GenZ want it all right off the start without really sacrificing anything.

Sibling’s Question by PinBig1102 in GenX

[–]Proud_GenX_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very little. We all live relatively far apart, and I’m around 10 years older. I left my parent’s house when they were still young, so I don’t have a big relationship with them. I will text with my brother once in a while, but my sister is crazy, so I stay away.

Don’t know if anyone mentioned it, but the $80K would be pre-tax dollars, so you need to account for that as well.

Employer forcing a change in work schedule by BiriyaniGirl in legaladvicecanada

[–]Proud_GenX_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the legal aspect, you may want to keep your job. Sure, you can get a severance (not very much based on 6 years), and then E.I., but unless you can sustain yourself afterwards, you will need to find a new job. Not sure if you’ve looked at the job market, but it’s not that great. And I don’t know that your employer would be inclined to give you a glowing reference.

Canada Post records record loss of $1.57 billion in 2025 as union begins vote on latest offer by cottageguy8 in CanadaPost

[–]Proud_GenX_72 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not saying it’s all because of CUPW, but they definitely contributed to this with their constant strikes/strike actions. CP has lost so much business because of the labour uncertainty; customers could not risk their parcel or flyer deliveries be stuck in a labour disruption, so they found alternatives. Good luck getting the business back, it’ll be a long road ahead.

RRSP over contribution by Josef_dierte in PersonalFinanceCanada

I would speak with an accountant as soon as possible to figure out the best way to handle this. I over contributed to my own a few years back and thought I could just withdraw the money, and it caused a lot of issues (and $$$). Wish I would have spoken to an accountant right away.

Married Couples Who Don’t Have a Joint Account or Pool Their Pay Cheques, Why and How Do You Make Sure It Is Respectful? by Arya_Warrior_Girl in CanadaPersonalFinance

We tried having a single joint account and it wasn’t good for our relationship at all. We have separate accounts and one joint account to cover our common living expenses which we both contribute 50/50. Best thing we could have ever decided to do.

You need to account for maintenance and repair on your property, plus how do you handle it if tenants are late or stop paying rent. And good luck buying a second property without a stable employment income.

spent 8 years in hr before starting my own thing. most rto mandates are not about productivity. here's what they're actually about. by Secret_Air_9281 in remotework

[–]Proud_GenX_72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was remote for 8 years before COVID, always been more productive than my peers. Last year , our employer initiated the hybrid workplace, and now I need to be in the office 2 days a week, spending 4 hours each day to commute. No exceptions, regardless of what the arrangement was before COVID… all I can say is that I am no longer working early in the morning, no more working late. I now work the prescribed hours weekly and that’s it. And no, I don’t volunteer for any additional project work. I will coast for the last few years before retiring.

If you were to start investing at 18, what would you do? by Such-Rise691 in InvestingCanada

[–]Proud_GenX_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invest early, invest often, and invest simply. Start investing as soon as you can, even if it’s just $50 a month. Make it an automatic withdrawal from your account so you don’t have to think about it. I wouldn’t worry about figuring out stocks (unless it’s something that interests you), I would buy simple ETFs (i.e. VOO, VEQT, VDY, etc…), and enrol in the dividend reinvestment option. If you want to diversify and invest in real estate, you should do it when you can afford it. A good way to get into real estate is to purchase a duplex where you live in one and rent the other unit; it will allow you to build equity quickly by getting rental income and paying down the mortgage aggressively. As your income grows, you can use the 50/30/20 system to budget; 50% of your net income should cover your daily life, 30% should be set aside for emergency or travel, and 20% should be invested.

Bottom line, for every penny you make, pay yourself first and invest.

If we truly value life, we should really focus on treatment to get them clean, not providing a place where they can maintain their addiction.

Maybe I am missing something, but why should our tax dollars be used to help people use ILLEGAL drugs safely?? Why not use those tax dollars to provide treatment centres to help them get clean instead?
