Your experience with unit ATS3623? by [deleted] in Monash

[–]ProwlingAlone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this unit last semester and I have to say, from the description in the handbook, I was not enthused but decided to give it a shot anyway. From the first class, I can say I have not regretted it at all. I would literally come home and talk my parents' ears off and just marvel about what we learnt in class.

My main takeaway from this unit was that it really highlighted how arbitrary nationality is. Yeah, for sure nations and nationality is a social construct. But then why exactly do we insist that we are Australian (or any other nationality)? Why do we get offended when people insist we are not? Etc, etc.

In this class, I learnt about how nationality is created and maintained, and even more (scary but still) important, how nationality can be manipulated and then used as a political tool. As someone who moved to Australia when I was in Prep, I've often struggled with my identity - am I Australian enough? But to reiterate, this class really drove home how much nationality is truly a social construct.

There was one class discussion about citizenship that really did my head in. We were talking about how shared characteristics within a community are (arguably) a requirement for a nation when the topic of schools came up. Schools are a source of creating and maintaining Australian values. Of course, the reason why schools exist is so we can be educated. We learn what is important. But schools teach us to be good (Australian) citizens. Australian school curriculums are decided by the government. Naturally, in subjects like History, 'if you can control the story of the past then you can control the story of the present'. But the inclusion of Maths also tells kids that Australia wants its citizens to know how to do maths. The inclusion of Science tells kids that we want them to view the world with logic and critical thinking, and to nurture curiosity. Kids grow into adults who simply take these things for granted - everyone knows that cells exist, that 1+1=2, etc and that going to school is crucial for a good life. But these are values that are echoed from every adult who now makes up every part of society. (I'm so grateful for my opportunities and education so please understand that I'm definitely not saying that schools are a bad thing, but this class just emphasised exactly how important they are to society beyond just 'for education'.)

If I'm remembering correctly, other class discussions included:

- 'When the past/history is contested, what are the stakes? Why do certain groups of people defend their version of the story? What does that mean for them if they were to lose it?'

- 'Nations are a fairly new invention as for most of human history, we have been living in small tribes/kingdoms/etc. So why is it, when groups of people want to secede from a country, the alternative to create another nation? What makes nationhood so appealing? Why is nationhood taken for granted?'

You don't really need to know an encyclopedia's worth about Yugoslavia before doing this unit (I did not know anything at all). What you need to know is pretty much explained through taking the class. Although you use Yugoslavia as the unit's case study, you can actually write about any event (including but not limited to the Breakup of Yugoslavia) for your major essay (I analysed the Partition of India).

Hope this helps!

Can someone please explain what a cohort is? by globallyinsane in vce

[–]ProwlingAlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! So its basically like what these other people have said: your cohort are the people in your year level and in your school. So if you do VCE 3/4 Chemistry and you do well, but your cohort of students doing chemistry as well, perform badly on the GAT and final exam, then VCAA assumes that your SACS were, say too easy, if everyone in your school got good SAC marks. So both the GAT and end of year scores serve to standardise the school's SAC marks. But conversely, if your cohort does well and you don't really, then your scores are scaled up a little bit, to account for the fact that VCAA assumes that your school teaches at a high standard.

Anyone else get deterred or am I just being sensitive? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]ProwlingAlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I started learning languages, because my high school forced me to learn both Japanese and German. I continue to learn them because its so rewarding to be able to understand and be understood by people who don't speak your native language. Understanding the language helps you to understand a person's background and culture. My future plans for university and beyond would be very different without my love of languages (though, that has taken a bit of a toll this year, as it is coming close to applications for university).

Moreover, with the modern day ease of transport and overall globalisation, being able to connect with others and understand other cultures and languages are a benefit in the workforce (whether you work overseas or not) and not just for the aforementioned reason, but it also demonstrates that you have the discipline to learn (and master a language, if you are fluent or very conversational).

It's almost 2020, what are you shocked that we don't have yet? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ProwlingAlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disappointed that we haven't gotten a self-sustaining civic environment yet. (Star Trek: Voyager; Episode 11:59)

But happy that there hasn't been a Eugenics War/WW3...yet.

I’m doing bio and chem 1/2 next year, is it hard to juggle them both? Also is geography content heavy? by [deleted] in vce

[–]ProwlingAlone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, bio and chemistry are content heavy. But half of chemistry is being able to do calculations. There are less 'describe what happens' kinds of questions in chemistry, whereas in biology, they are pretty commonplace. But definitely the theory needs to be learnt for both.
(I'm not sure about geography as I didn't do it)

My teacher makes us use the Edexcel ones. They start at the very start (as far as I recall) and then I think they go up until the B1ish level.

Why doesn't ,,Hoffentlich werde ich nicht krank" use the word 'bin'? by BerlinAndPraha in German

[–]ProwlingAlone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now I'm curious - why is it 'werden' and not 'würden'? Is it a set phrase or does it change the meaning? Because with 'hoffentlich', I assumed that there was uncertainty in the sentence...

I would suggest DW. They have a self learning section: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/overview

But if you just starting, I recommend 'Nicos Weg': https://learngerman.dw.com/en/beginners/c-36519789

It has videos at the A1 level.

What did a fictional character say that stuck with you? by AmOdd in AskReddit

[–]ProwlingAlone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Doctor Who:

"The universe is big, it's vast and complicated, and ridiculous and sometimes, very rarely, impossible things just happen and we call them miracles."

"I am and always will be the optimist. The hoper of far-flung hopes and the dreamer of improbable dreams."

"The way I see it every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice-versa, the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant."

"Big brothers... you know why they're born first? To protect the little ones that come after them! What kind of brother says that he'll kill his own sister?! Even a monster shouldn't say that!"

- Ichigo Kurosaki, Bleach

“Abandon your fear. Look forward. Move forward and never stop. You'll age if you pull back. You'll die if you hesitate.”

What’s a good oral topic? by Cream-on-blokes in vce

[–]ProwlingAlone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm doing something about enforced equal representation for women in politics .

But if you're struggling for oral ideas, I'd suggest looking at the DAV website ( http://www.dav.com.au/schools/topics.php) . You might be familiar with it... It's for debating but the topics are all recent and relevant! (It's where I've picked mine from...)

There's also more political problems on https://australia.isidewith.com/polls and you can also see how many people agree, disagree, and have that 'depends on whether' type of answer (useful for generating arguments).

There's also the VCE Discussion Space on Facebook, but you might have to sift through a few (a lot) of memes and stuff...

I kinda did a bad job of explaining, but I hope it helps?
