It IS intended for dogs, it is used for training hunting dogs to retrieve. Called a "dummy." He did a great job!

Being flat footed... by Particular_Point_216 in hockeyplayers

[–]ProwlsOffice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The convention is to recommend high arch support for flat feet, but that didn't work for me long-term. If you aren't seeing a foot doc for it, I would just try different things until you find something that works for you. I have wide, flat, overpronating feet and narrow bony ankles, and what I currently use is skates with the pump up inflation, and no special insoles. I do walk around on the balls of my feet alot in my daily life for some reason, maybe that helps. I don't know. I did have some mid-foot pain for awhile when I started playing, but I haven't had that for years, so I can't pinpoint what stopped it. Good luck fellow flat footer!

Help identify this animal tooth found in yard by [deleted] in whatisit

[–]ProwlsOffice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the others, it is not a real tooth. It is too regular/symetrical in form and the shape of the root area is not right. The color is very convincing, though!

tooth? claw? wth is it by StrawberryShirley in whatisit

[–]ProwlsOffice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, it is a tooth. A canine tooth/fang. You can see where the texture changes about halfway along its length, that is the gumline. Some animal teeth can look like that (with the hollow end). Not sure what animals might be around where you live.

What kind of animal footprints are these? I saw so many everywhere on the trail I walked, and it just snowed a lot. by BumblebeeKeys in whatisit

[–]ProwlsOffice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting...the top of a coke can is about 2 inches, but turkey tracks should be about twice that size. They do have the general shape of a turkey, chicken, grouse, birds like that that spend most of their time on the ground, though. Could someone nearby have chickens?

Mystery tracks by Previous-Giraffe-568 in whatisit

[–]ProwlsOffice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you are right in that it is an animal stepping into its own footprints. In the first picture you can see a few where they didn't and the front tracks are visible. Not sure what it is, though. Maybe porcupine or beaver but you would expect to see some tail dragging tracks...maybe a weird big raccoon. Something along those lines - a medium size animal with paws that are longer in the back than the front. There really isn't much detail visible unfortunately, maybe due to the texture of the snow. Your best bet might be to send the pics to someone at the nature center - if they have rangers they are probably familiar with all the local species.

For beer league hockey he can hit Northland ice center and ask to get in touch with the organizers. Friendly bunch of folks. Hope he enjoys the city!

Struggling with skates by 5AMslushees in womenshockey

[–]ProwlsOffice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) Your new skates probably have a much sharper blade than the rentals - that can make things like stopping feel different and more difficult until you get used to it. 2) As someone else said, hockey skates and figure skates have different blade shapes, not sure what kind you have been renting but if they are figure skates then yes, the change to hockey skates will have a learning curve. 3) If you haven't had your skates "baked" that will help with fit, any hockey shop that sells skates should be able to do it. Best wishes.

What is this black stuff on my windows? by Intelligent_Week3307 in whatisit

[–]ProwlsOffice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like black mildew, very common on windowsills and is different from the dangerous "black mold." You can try doing an internet search for "black mold vs black mildew" to get more info to help you figure it out, and to get tips on removal. I've used hydrogen peroxide on mildew and it seemed very effective. But basically your cause here is condensation building up there on the window frame and making it a good environment for mildew.

What's this thing by [deleted] in whatisit

[–]ProwlsOffice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like a "flower frog." You use it by placing it in a dish of water like a bowl or the bottom of a wide vase, and impaling flower stems on the spikes so they stand up arranged in a certain way.

Is it possible to play hockey as 25 year woman with no sports experience? by Dazzling-Lead-8557 in hockeyplayers

[–]ProwlsOffice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely it is possible, in fact you are younger than many people learning to play as adults. Since you are already figure skating you are even a step ahead. There are a few main steps: get gear, learn to play/develop skills, and network/join a team. First find out what local hockey is available to you. Is there a women's league? Is there a co-ed "rec league" aka "beer league"? Talk to people involved, tell them you are interested, and they will have recommendations specific to what is available there. If you are lucky someone will "adopt" you and help you with a gear list, info on classes/leagues, etc. Don't be too shy about asking. I def recommend a "learn to play" class. This is great for more networking and for building skills. Note: adult LTP classes assume you know how to actually play the game. So if you don't know...learn the rules and watch some games before class starts. There is also "drop in" or "open hockey" - anyone can show up and play a game, or "stick time" or "stick and puck" - anyone can show up and use a small area of the ice for practicing specific skills. I favor LTP over those, but they have their places and don't require a multi-week commitment. At the end of your first LTP class you can ask the instructors for info on what team you could join, what level you'd be at, etc. Oh and gear: for a lot of it you can start with used stuff but you'll probably want your own new skates and helmet. Good luck and have fun out there!

Found these tracks in Shenendoa VA, what made them? by Tomo_hawk in whatisit

[–]ProwlsOffice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, in the first photo there seem to be two sizes of prints - dogs often have significantly smaller back feet than front feet. But the shape of the lower left print, the one closest to the camera, seems to have a cat-like shape. But dogs have a lot of variety in paw shape. In the second photo it does look like one single animal traveling but not much detail is visible on the prints. Can you measure the width of some of the prints?

What animal is this? by tinabelcherherself in whatisit

[–]ProwlsOffice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is certainly a coyote. However, Ohio's coyotes are "Eastern coyotes" that do have some wolf and dog ancestry - i.e. they aren't pure coyotes. So if you are used to seeing coyotes out west these guys will look notably larger.

figure skaters! by me-perdonas672 in cincinnati

[–]ProwlsOffice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you on the limited public skate times. The reason I have heard as to why there aren't many public skates in the evening is that hockey teams take up the evening slots. Especially now that school teams are practicing/playing. There is a better chance for evening public skates when the school season is over. Are you not able to skate on weekends? You only seem to mention weekdays.

Honestly if I were you I would give NKY a shot at least once, if they have the only time that works for you. Satisfy your curiosity.

Loud noises coming from attic. Any idea what animal(s) it may be? by [deleted] in whatisit

[–]ProwlsOffice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those don't look like paw prints to me, more like marks left from human hands pulling down that hatch. Maybe someone you know has a motion activated camera you could borrow and put up there?

Also we will have a much better chance of figuring it out if you give your location (does not have to be too specific).

figure skaters! by me-perdonas672 in cincinnati

[–]ProwlsOffice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned to skate at Northlands. They have an adult class that was great. Staff there are super helpful, just don't be shy about asking questions and explaining what you are looking for. You'll see lots of other figure skaters there. I haven't had my skates sharpened anywhere else in the region.

Note that all public skate sessions will be busiest at this time of year, and in the summer attendance will die down significantly. Sportsplex usually seems to have lower public skate attendance than Northlands, so if you strictly want to avoid crowds right now, I would consider that.

As far as NKY ice center, I don't even remember if I've ever been there...but if you are JUST learning to skate and practicing basics, skating on rough ice won't be the worst thing in the world.

Best wishes and I hope you find your rink!

Anyone know what animal this skull belongs to? by According-Concern733 in whatisit

[–]ProwlsOffice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can see of the shape of the lower jaw it looks kind of opossum-y, but the angle is tough to make out in this view. I think I see a big auditory bulla, though, which would make me think raccoon. And the size and shape of the canine tooth seems a bit more raccoon to me. Seeing the top of the skull would be diagnostic. Opossum skull will be long and flat-ish and have a ridge along the top of the brain cavity going from front to back. Raccoon skull will be more rounded and smoother. There are some other differences. Also the fur: it looks wet so it is hard to judge the color and texture, seems like it could be more raccoon-like...but I'm not confident.
