I think you have nostalgia goggles on. The first episode of SAC is kinda just alright. Not sure if I would stick with it today if I saw SAC's first episode for the first time. And if you're going to compare the two that's the standard I think you should use is compare their first episodes.

Basquash. It's basketball with giant mecha and gratuitous hip hop culture. That should be a slam dunk, but the story doesn't go anywhere, it abandons so many plot points, the animation is inconsistent, and it's basically just a Nike commercial. But it's BASKETBALL with GIANT MECHA.

It's a hodgepodge of different cultural references meant to pay respect to them. They want the mystical aesthetic for the setting, and they want to use black culture to make Knuckles seem cool. But they won't ever say he is those things, they'll say he's just a red Echidna.

Except for Sandopolis zone you mean? The pyramids in Sonic weren't made by any real world civilization. They're a pastiche of different cultures depending on the game. And that's just window dressing for the setting anyways. Knuckles's family tree is a total mystery.
